Quatrième exemple.

Cette citation ne se trouve nulle part littéralement dans l'Ancien Testament, mais la pensée revient dans plus d'un passage. Ainsi la défense du parjure ou faux serment est contenue dans Lévitique 19.12, et le devoir de tenir au Seigneur ses serments, ou ses vœux, ou ses promesses, se trouve prescrit dans Deutéronome 23.21. Sur ce point régnaient aussi parmi les Juifs de pernicieux abus, qui ne se sont que trop perpétués chez les chrétiens.

Il n'y a aucune raison de douter de la valeur des serments solennels prononcés dans une cour de justice, ou en d'autres occasions importantes, s'ils sont faits toutefois avec tout le sérieux qui s’impose en de telles circonstances. Mais tous les serments lancés « à la légère », dans une conversation banale, sont des paroles coupables, ainsi que toutes les vaines expressions communes qui en appellent à Dieu ; bien des personnes essayent de ne pas commettre de faute, en cherchant à ne s’engager sous aucun serment.

Plus les hommes sont assujettis au péché, moins ils respectent leurs engagements ; au contraire, plus ils sont sérieux, moins ils éprouvent le besoin de s’engager. Notre Seigneur n'enjoint pas les termes précis par lesquels nous devons affirmer ou nier ; nous devons par contre « cheminer » constamment dans la vérité, afin de rendre nos éventuels serments inutiles !
