Nos péchés sont nos dettes devant Dieu, dettes énormes que nul ne peut payer Matthieu 18.24,25 ; Luc 7.41,42, qui doivent nous être remises gratuitement. Cette prière même, enseignée par le Sauveur, est une déclaration touchante que Dieu, dans sa miséricorde, pardonne à toute âme repentante qui l'implore. Son pardon est même beaucoup plus que la remise d'une dette à un débiteur, car en ôtant la peine du péché, il nous met en possession de tout son amour et de la vie éternelle. Et pourtant, le besoin du pardon se renouvelle sans cesse dans une conscience délicate, parce que journellement nous contractons quelque dette qui doit nous être remise.

- Quiconque souffre ainsi de ses péchés et en demande le pardon, est tout disposé à pardonner aux hommes qui l'auraient offensé ; ou plutôt, au moment de sa repentance et de sa prière, il a déjà pardonné au fond de son cœur. C'est ce qu'exprime le texte authentique : comme nous avons remis (parfait indéfini qui exprime le fait accompli et la permanence de l'action). Le texte reçu a le présent : nous remettons.

Cette leçon est empruntée à Luc. Le mot comme exprime, non la mesure de notre pardon, qui ne peut jamais se comparer au pardon de Dieu, mais la présence en nous de la disposition qui correspond au pardon divin et permet à celui-ci de se manifester. Luc dit : "car nous-mêmes aussi nous remettons," ce qui exprime la même pensée.
