World English Bible "Though you, Israel, play the prostitute, yet don't let Judah offend; and don't come to Gilgal, neither go up to Beth Aven, nor swear, 'As Yahweh lives.'

15 à 19 Comme s'il désespérait de ramener Israël, corrompu tout entier en tant que peuple et dans la personne de ses prêtres, le prophète se tourne vers Juda qu'il voudrait au moins pouvoir sauver.

Guilgal. Il est parlé parfois d'un Guilgal voisin de Silo et de Béthel, sur le plateau d'Ephraïm (Josué 9.6) ; mais il est probable que le prophète pense plutôt au Guilgal plus connu qui se trouvait dans la plaine du Jourdain, entre ce fleuve et Jéricho, et dont l'emplacement a été retrouvé en 1865 dans la colline appelée par les Arabes Tell-Djeldjoul. Cet endroit avait été la première station d'Israël après le passage du Jourdain ; c'était là que le peuple avait été circoncis et avait célébré la première Pâque en Canaan. Il était resté sacré et avait probablement été changé en un lieu de culte idolâtre. Il appartenait alors, aussi bien que Jéricho (1Rois 16.34), au royaume des dix tribus.

Beth-Aven, littéralement, maison de néant. Ce nom formé par Osée remplace ironiquement celui de Béthel, qui signifie maison de Dieu. Amos 5.5, en mentionnant tous ces mêmes lieux de culte, avait dit : Béthel deviendra néant. Osée part de là pour transformer le nom même de Béthel. Le lieu illustré par l'apparition de Dieu à Jacob et auquel le patriarche avait donné le nom mémorable de Béthel, mais où l'on a établi le culte du veau d'or, n'est plus qu'un Beth-Aven !

Ne jurez pas... Le serment au nom de l'Eternel n'était point défendu ; c'était un acte d'adoration. Il s'agit donc d'un serment dans lequel on emploie la formule qui ne devait s'appliquer qu'à l'Eternel, à l'honneur du veau d'or ou de quelque idole.
