1. Fils d'Éléazar, et petit-fils d'Aaron (Ex 6:25,1Ch 6:4,50, Esd 7:5). Succéda à son père comme grand-prêtre (Jug 20:28). Il montra son zèle pour l'Éternel à Sittim : le baalisme et la débauche des Israélites en Moab avaient provoqué la colère divine, qui avait frappé le peuple d'une « plaie » ; un Hébreu. ayant osé amener une Madianite jusque dans le camp et dans sa tente, Phinées indigné les suivit et les transperça de sa javeline, et la « plaie » fut arrêtée (No 25:1,9). Pour cet exploit, Phinées reçut la promesse du sacerdoce perpétuel pour sa descendance (No 25:10,13) et fut célébré, plus tard, comme l'exécuteur de la justice de Dieu (Ps 106:30 et suivant, Sir 45:23 et suivant, 1Ma 2:26,54). Dans la guerre contre les Madianites, il accompagnait les combattants, comme prêtre, portant les instruments sacrés (No 31:6). Il rétablit la paix entre les tribus de l'Ouest et celles de l'Est, au sujet d'un autel distinct que celles-ci avaient élevé de

l'autre côté du Jourdain (Jos 22:10-34). 11 était à Béthel, avec l'arche de l'alliance, quand les tribus consultèrent l'Éternel à propos de l'expédition répressive projetée contre la tribu de Benjamin (Jug 20:26,28). Une colline lui avait été donnée dans la montagne d'Éphraïm et portait son nom ; son père y fut enseveli (Jos 24:33). Au retour de l'exil, une famille de prêtres était nommée « enfants de Phinées » (Esd 8:2). On le considérait comme le « chef » des Corites, gardiens des portes du tabernacle (1Ch 9:20).

2. Un des deux fils d'Héli ; voir Hophni et Phinées. Sa femme, apprenant en même temps la défaite d'Israël, la prise de l'arche, la mort de son mari, de son beau-frère et de son beau-père, mourut subitement en donnant le jour à Icabod (1Sa 4:19-22).

3. Père d'Éléazar, contemporain d'Esdras (Esd 8:33).

      25 Eleazar Aaron's son took one of the daughters of Putiel as his wife; and she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites according to their families.

      15 They came to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying,
      16 "Thus says the whole congregation of Yahweh, 'What trespass is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following Yahweh, in that you have built yourselves an altar, to rebel this day against Yahweh?
      17 Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, although there came a plague on the congregation of Yahweh,
      18 that you must turn away this day from following Yahweh? It will be, since you rebel today against Yahweh, that tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.
      19 However, if the land of your possession is unclean, then pass over to the land of the possession of Yahweh, in which Yahweh's tabernacle dwells, and take possession among us; but don't rebel against Yahweh, nor rebel against us, in building an altar other than the altar of Yahweh our God.
      20 Didn't Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? That man didn't perish alone in his iniquity.'"
      21 Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spoke to the heads of the thousands of Israel,
      22 "The Mighty One, God, Yahweh, the Mighty One, God, Yahweh, he knows; and Israel shall know: if it was in rebellion, or if in trespass against Yahweh (don't save us this day),
      23 that we have built us an altar to turn away from following Yahweh; or if to offer burnt offering or meal offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings, let Yahweh himself require it.
      24 "If we have not out of concern done this, and for a reason, saying, 'In time to come your children might speak to our children, saying, "What have you to do with Yahweh, the God of Israel?
      25 For Yahweh has made the Jordan a border between us and you, you children of Reuben and children of Gad. You have no portion in Yahweh."' So your children might make our children cease from fearing Yahweh.
      26 "Therefore we said, 'Let's now prepare to build ourselves an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice;
      27 but it will be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may perform the service of Yahweh before him with our burnt offerings, with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings;' that your children may not tell our children in time to come, 'You have no portion in Yahweh.'
      28 "Therefore we said, 'It shall be, when they tell us or our generations this in time to come, that we shall say, "Behold the pattern of the altar of Yahweh, which our fathers made, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you."'
      29 "Far be it from us that we should rebel against Yahweh, and turn away this day from following Yahweh, to build an altar for burnt offering, for meal offering, or for sacrifice, besides the altar of Yahweh our God that is before his tabernacle!"
      30 When Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation, even the heads of the thousands of Israel that were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them well.
      31 Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, "Today we know that Yahweh is in the midst of us, because you have not committed this trespass against Yahweh. Now you have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of Yahweh."
      32 Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, to the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
      33 The thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and spoke no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land in which the children of Reuben and the children of Gad lived.
      34 The children of Reuben and the children of Gad named the altar "A Witness Between Us that Yahweh is God."

      33 Eleazar the son of Aaron died. They buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill country of Ephraim.

      13 cette alliance, valable pour lui et pour ses descendants, fait d’eux des prêtres pour toujours. Il a en effet montré son attachement exclusif pour moi, son Dieu, et il a obtenu ainsi le pardon en faveur des Israélites. »

      6 Moïse les envoya tous au combat, accompagnés du prêtre Pinhas, fils d’Élazar. Celui-ci emportait les objets sacrés, ainsi que les trompettes pour donner le signal du cri de guerre.

      10 A leur arrivée en bordure du Jourdain, alors qu’ils étaient encore dans le pays de Canaan, ils construisirent un autel d’aspect impressionnant près de la rivière.
      11 On vint l’annoncer aux autres Israélites : « Écoutez, les tribus de Ruben et de Gad, ainsi que la demi-tribu orientale de Manassé, ont construit un autel en bordure du Jourdain, de notre côté, dans le pays de Canaan. »
      12 A cette nouvelle, les Israélites se rassemblèrent tous à Silo pour aller attaquer les tribus orientales.
      13 Ils envoyèrent Pinhas, fils du prêtre Élazar, dans le pays de Galaad pour qu’il parle aux tribus de Ruben et de Gad, ainsi qu’à la demi-tribu orientale de Manassé.
      14 Dix responsables du peuple l’accompagnaient, un par tribu ; c’étaient tous des chefs de famille dans les clans d’Israël.
      15 Ils se rendirent dans le pays de Galaad auprès des tribus orientales, et leur parlèrent ainsi
      16 au nom de tous les autres Israélites : « Pourquoi avez-vous commis une faute aussi grave à l’égard du Dieu d’Israël ? Pourquoi cessez-vous maintenant d’obéir au Seigneur ? En construisant votre propre autel vous vous révoltez contre lui.
      17 A Péor, nous avons déjà commis une faute dont nous subissons encore les conséquences, malgré le fléau que le Seigneur a infligé alors à tout son peuple ! N’est-ce pas suffisant ?
      18 Voilà que vous cessez maintenant d’obéir au Seigneur ! Si vous vous révoltez contre lui aujourd’hui, demain c’est sur tout le peuple d’Israël qu’il fera tomber sa colère !
      19 Si vous considérez que votre territoire est indigne du Seigneur, revenez dans le pays qui lui appartient, là où se trouve sa demeure sainte, et occupez des terres au milieu des nôtres. Mais surtout ne vous révoltez pas contre lui et contre nous, en vous construisant un autel rival de celui du Seigneur notre Dieu.
      20 Lorsque Akan, descendant de Zéra, commit une faute grave à propos des biens qu’il était interdit de prendre, c’est tout le peuple d’Israël qui subit la colère du Seigneur, vous le savez bien ! Et Akan ne fut pas seul à mourir à cause de sa faute ! »
      21 Les membres des tribus de Ruben et de Gad, ainsi que ceux de la demi-tribu orientale de Manassé, répondirent aux chefs de clans des autres tribus :
      22 « Le Seigneur est le Dieu suprême, oui, il est le Dieu suprême, et il sait pourquoi nous avons agi ainsi. Tous les Israélites le sauront également ! Si c’est une révolte, une faute grave commise contre le Seigneur, qu’il ne nous laisse pas en vie plus longtemps !
      23 Si nous avons construit notre propre autel pour désobéir au Seigneur en y offrant des sacrifices complets, des offrandes végétales ou des sacrifices de communion, que le Seigneur lui-même nous en punisse !
      24 Mais tel n’est pas le cas ! Au contraire, nous avons agi ainsi, car nous avions peur que, dans l’avenir, vos descendants disent aux nôtres : “Quel lien y a-t-il entre vous et le Seigneur, le Dieu d’Israël ?
      25 Le Seigneur lui-même a placé le Jourdain comme frontière entre nous et vous, gens de Ruben et de Gad. Non, vous n’avez aucun droit à l’égard du Seigneur !” Ainsi vos descendants pourraient inciter les nôtres à ne plus adorer le Seigneur.
      26 C’est pourquoi, nous avons décidé de construire cet autel, mais non pour y offrir des sacrifices complets ou d’autres sacrifices.
      27 Nous voulons seulement que, pour nous et pour vous, puis pour les générations futures, cet autel témoigne du droit que nous avons de rendre un culte au Seigneur par nos sacrifices complets, nos sacrifices de communion et nos autres sacrifices. De cette manière, vos descendants ne pourront pas affirmer aux nôtres qu’ils n’ont aucun droit à l’égard du Seigneur.
      28 Nous nous sommes dit que si, plus tard, ils l’affirmaient tout de même à nous ou à nos descendants, on pourrait répondre : “Regardez, nos ancêtres ont donné à cet autel la forme même de l’autel du Seigneur. Cependant, ils ne l’ont pas construit pour y offrir des sacrifices complets ou d’autres sacrifices, mais pour qu’il soit un témoin entre nous et vous !”
      29 Il n’est pas question de nous révolter maintenant contre le Seigneur ou de lui être infidèles en construisant un autel pour offrir des sacrifices complets, des offrandes végétales ou d’autres sacrifices. Nous n’en offrirons pas en dehors de l’autel du Seigneur notre Dieu, qui se trouve devant la demeure qui lui est consacrée. »
      30 Le prêtre Pinhas, les responsables du peuple et les chefs des clans israélites furent satisfaits par les explications des gens de Ruben, de Gad et de Manassé.
      31 Pinhas, fils du prêtre Élazar, leur déclara : « Maintenant nous savons que le Seigneur est avec nous, puisque vous n’avez pas commis à son égard la faute grave que nous craignions. Ainsi vous n’exposez pas les Israélites à subir le châtiment du Seigneur. »
      32 Ensuite Pinhas, fils du prêtre Élazar, et les responsables du peuple prirent congé des tribus de Ruben et de Gad. Ils quittèrent le pays de Galaad pour regagner celui de Canaan et y faire leur rapport aux autres Israélites.
      33 Ceux-ci se déclarèrent satisfaits et remercièrent Dieu. Ils abandonnèrent l’idée d’aller attaquer les tribus de Ruben et de Gad et de dévaster leurs territoires.
      34 Les gens de Ruben et de Gad s’exclamèrent alors : « Cet autel témoigne pour nous tous que le Seigneur est Dieu ! » Et ils donnèrent à l’autel le nom de “Témoin”.

      33 Élazar, fils d’Aaron, mourut également. On l’enterra sur la colline qui avait été donnée à son fils Pinhas, dans la région montagneuse d’Éfraïm.

      26 Alors toute la population d’Israël se rendit à Béthel. Les gens s’y assirent en présence du Seigneur pour se lamenter et, ce jour-là, ils jeûnèrent jusqu’au soir. Ils présentèrent au Seigneur des sacrifices complets et des sacrifices de communion.

      19 La belle-fille d’Héli, la femme de Pinhas, était enceinte et près d’accoucher. Lorsqu’elle apprit que les Philistins s’étaient emparés du coffre sacré, et que son beau-père et son mari étaient morts, elle s’accroupit car les douleurs l’avaient saisie, et elle accoucha.
      20 Puis, comme elle était sur le point de mourir, les femmes qui se tenaient près d’elle lui dirent : « N’aie pas peur ! Tu as donné naissance à un fils. » Mais elle ne répondit rien ; elle ne fit même pas attention.
      21 Par la suite, elle déclara : « Puisque la gloire de Dieu a quitté Israël, je donne à l’enfant le nom d’Ikabod. » Ce nom, qui signifie “Il n’y a plus de gloire”, était une allusion à la prise du coffre sacré, et à la mort de son beau-père et de son mari.
      22 Elle affirma ainsi que la gloire avait quitté Israël parce que le coffre du Seigneur avait été emporté par les ennemis.
