Cette nuit-là : dans les heures qui suivront l'aspersion du sang de l'agneau sur les montants et le linteau de chaque porte. Ce sera l'expiation opérée par ce sang qui mettra la maison et ses habitants, réunis pour le repas, à l'abri du fléau qui frappera toutes les familles de l'Egypte (verset 23). Israël n'ayant pas encore de centre et n'étant pas encore constitué comme peuple, ne pouvait être purifié que par familles.

Rôtie au feu ; proprement mise à la broche. Le mot hébreu tsala paraît appartenir à la même racine que thala, suspendre, empaler, mettre en croix.

Des pains sans levain : voir au verset 15.

Des herbes amères : laitue sauvage, chicorée ou autres. Ce mets est un simple accessoire dans le banquet, comme chez nous la salade. Il était destiné soit à assaisonner les autres aliments, soit plutôt à figurer l'état de souffrance dans lequel Israël avait vécu et dont il allait sortir ; comparez l'expression 1.14 : Ils leur rendirent, la vie amère.
