Le neuvième commandement
La bonne réputation vaut mieux que la richesse, est-il dit (Proverbes 22.4). Enlever à un homme son honneur, est chose pire encore que de le dépouiller de son avoir. Les termes du commandement se rapportent proprement aux faux témoignages rendus devant les juges, mais ils n'excluent pas l'application plus générale à toute déclaration qui peut nuire à la bonne réputation du prochain (comparez Exode 23.1).

Ces quatre derniers commandements caractérisent le péché par ses manifestations extérieures les plus grossières ; on comprendra pourquoi si l'on se rappelle que le Décalogue devait être la base non seulement de la vie religieuse et morale, mais de la vie sociale et de la législation d'Israël. Cependant pour que le caractère très extérieur de ces commandements ne porte pas atteinte à l'appréciation vraiment morale du péché, le Décalogue se termine par une parole qui poursuit le mal jusqu'à sa racine, dans les dernières profondeurs de l'âme. La convoitise, le désir d'avoir et de jouir, est le principe de la violation de tous les commandements précédents ; elle a été celui du péché lui-même compris comme violation de la loi (Genèse 3.6), parce qu'elle est elle-même péché, révolte contre la volonté divine.
