Le dixième commandement
Les législateurs humains ont dit : Tu ne tueras point ; tu ne déroberas point. Mais aucun n'a dit, ni n'a pu dire : Tu ne convoiteras point. La loi de Dieu seule peut parler ainsi.

Dans l'énumération des objets de la convoitise, la maison est placée en tête et nommée à part. C'est que, dans l'intuition tout à fait antique, ce mot comprend tout ce qui appartient à l'homme, même sa femme et ses enfants. Les termes suivants ne sont donc que l'énumération de toutes les choses contenues dans le premier. Dans le Deutéronome, chapitre 5 où les commandements sont reproduits avec une grande liberté et à un point de vue plutôt humain que strictement légal, c'est la femme qui, au verset 21, est mise en tête, soit en tant que bien principal, soit parce que c'est celui qui devient l'objet de la convoitise la plus grave et la plus coupable. Le terme de maison employé là est pris dans un sens un peu plus restreint que dans l'Exode.
