Le troisième commandement

Le sens littéral est : Tu n'énonceras pas le nom de Dieu pour chose vaine.
L'expression le nom de Dieu renferme pour le peuple tout ce que Dieu lui a révélé de lui-même et pour chaque individu tout ce qu'il s'est approprié de cette révélation. Ce nom est donc pour Israël aussi sacré que Dieu lui-même ; il ne doit être prononcé en aucune manière au service du mal (la vanité), ni sous la forme du parjure, ni sous celle des formules magiques ; il ne doit pas même être fait de ce nom un usage léger et frivole.

Cette forme de la menace : n'absoudra point celui qui... est motivée par la facilité avec laquelle on peut se laisser aller à ce genre de péché, qui, n'étant qu'affaire de parole, peut paraître sans conséquence. On sait comment les Juifs, pour éviter de profaner le nom sacré, en sont venus à en bannir complètement l'usage sous sa vraie forme.
