L'arc-en-ciel, avec ses couleurs à la fois éclatantes et douces, tempère la vivacité éblouissante de l'éclat de ce trône ; comparez Apocalypse 4.3. Si l'on rapproche ce symbole de Genèse 9.1-2, on l'appliquera naturellement aux promesses de grâce qui tempèrent pour les membres de l'alliance les sévérités du jugement divin.

C'était une apparition... Voilà le grand mot, qui résume la vision et en fait sentir la grandeur. Ezéchiel succombe à la puissance de cette révélation et demeure couché sur sa face jusqu'à ce que Dieu lui-même lui donne la force de se relever ; comparez Apocalypse 1.17 ; Daniel 9.8-10.

De tous temps, la vision que nous venons d'étudier en détail a été envisagée comme particulièrement importante et difficile. Elle porte chez les rabbins le nom de Mercaba : chariot. La Synagogue l'envisageait comme dépassant l'intelligence humaine et en interdisait la lecture avant l'âge de 30 ans. Il en était de même de quelques autres morceaux, tels que la fin de notre prophète, le premier chapitre de la Genèse, le Cantique des Cantiques, etc. Le Talmud dit : On n'explique pas la section des degrés de mariage défendus devant trois personnes, ni celle de la création devant deux, ni celle du Mercaba devant une seule, à moins que ce ne soit un sage qui, par sa propre intelligence, possède déjà la connaissance. (Chagiga, II).

Le sens de ce morceau n'est pourtant pas si difficile à comprendre, dès qu'on le met en relation avec la situation dans laquelle Ezéchiel fut appelé au ministère prophétique. Dieu se disposait alors à abandonner le sanctuaire auquel avaient été attachées jusqu'à ce moment la grâce de sa présence et les manifestations de sa gloire. Les chapitres suivants nous montreront le chariot, symbole de la gloire de l'Eternel, s'élevant de dessus le Lieu très saint où il était fixé, pour se transporter d'abord au seuil du temple (9.3), puis à l'entrée du parvis extérieur (10.19) ; après quoi il quittera entièrement le temple pour se transporter sur la montagne des Oliviers, à l'orient de la ville (11.23). Que veut dire cela ? Jusqu'ici l'arche de l'alliance, ce trône de l'Eternel, avec les deux chérubins qui la couvraient de leurs ailes, reposait immobile dans le Lieu très saint. L'Eternel n'avait-il pas trouvé là le lieu de son repos ? (Psaumes 132.8,14.) Mais maintenant, à la suite des infidélités de son peuple, Dieu va livrer ce sanctuaire visible à la destruction ; son trône doit donc s'en éloigner. Voilà pourquoi ce trône est ici transformé en un chariot mobile. De là aussi le changement apporté à la forme des chérubins. Ils ont maintenant quatre faces au lieu d'une seule et quatre ailes au lieu de deux. C'est que tout est calculé maintenant pour le mouvement, comme précédemment pour le repos. Mais Dieu n'abandonne pas seulement son domicile précédent ; il va s'en chercher un nouveau. D'abord, il veut accompagner son peuple en captivité. Je serai là, dit-il, votre sanctuaire (11.16) ; puis c'est le moment où la révélation spéciale accordée à Israël va commencer à faire place à la révélation universelle. Nébucadnetsar et les Babyloniens, Cyrus et les Perses, vont être appelés à contempler le bras de l'Eternel. Et comme le chérubin à la face unique et au regard fixé vers l'arche représentait la révélation à Israël seul, le chérubin à quatre faces, tournées vers les quatre côtés de l'horizon, est le symbole de l'action universelle de Dieu et de sa révélation qui va s'adresser désormais au monde entier. Il y avait ici un problème graphique inouï à résoudre : c'était de représenter l'idée de la toute-puissance et de l'action universelle de Dieu sous une forme sensible, finie et localisée. C'est ce qui a produit les combinaisons étranges qui étonnent dans tout le tableau. Plus tard, quand la gloire de Jéhova, parfaitement révélée en Jésus, s'élèvera en sa personne sur le trône divin, tout cet appareil de mouvement disparaitra de nouveau. Les quatre chérubins n'auront plus chacun qu'une face unique, et au lieu de voler, ils seront couchés à l'entour du trône immobile où siège le Seigneur et d'où il remplit l'univers et règne sur toutes choses (Apocalypse 4.6-7 ; Romains 14.9).
