Il y a sur les rivages de la mer de petits lacs ou de simples mares qui restent séparés du bassin principal par des bancs de sable et qui ne seront point assainis par l'action vivifiante des eaux du sanctuaire. Le voyageur Robinson raconte qu'au printemps, quand la mer Morte déborde, ses eaux se répandent dans les terrains bas qui l'entourent ; puis, en été, lorsque le niveau de la mer baisse de nouveau, les eaux demeurées dans ces étangs s'évaporent en laissant sur le sol une couche de sel ; comparez Sophonie 2.9.
