Au moment de rapporter un second témoignage que le Précurseur rendit en présence e ses disciples, l'évangéliste en marque le temps précis : le lendemain.

Il donnera de semblables indications aux versets. 37 ; et 44. Le souvenir de ces trois journées consécutives est resté ineffaçable dans le cœur de Jean, car ce furent les jours de sa première rencontre avec Jésus et, par là même, de sa naissance à la foi et à une vie nouvelle.

- Jean voit Jésus qui vient à lui, non point pour être baptisé, le baptême a eu lieu ; mais bien, comme nous l'apprendra la suite de ce chapitre, pour chercher et trouver parmi les disciples de Jean ses premiers disciples. L'évangéliste ne dit pas d'où il venait : il revenait probablement du désert et de sa première lutte avec la puissance des ténèbres (note précédente).

Ces termes, si profonds et si vrais par lesquels Jean-Baptiste présente le Sauveur à ses disciples, peuvent, au premier abord, nous étonner, mais ils n'avaient rien d'inusité pour des Israélites. Et d'abord, cette image : l'Agneau (avec l'article qui dessine un agneau spécial) était bien connue de tout lecteur de l'Ancien Testament. Esaïe (Esaïe 53.7) avait annoncé le serviteur de l'Eternel comme un "agneau qu'on mène à la boucherie, une brebis muette devant ceux qui la tondent ;" et tous les écrivains du Nouveau Testament ont appliqué cette prophétie au Sauveur, comme l'avaient fait, avant eux, plusieurs interprètes juifs.

En ajoutant que c'est là l'Agneau de Dieu, le Précurseur fait comprendre que ce n'est pas l'homme qui s'est donné un Sauveur mais qu'il lui vient de la miséricorde éternelle de Dieu. Peut-être même faut-il remonter plus haut qu'Esaïe pour retrouver l'image sous laquelle il peignait le Libérateur futur de son peuple. C'était par le sang d'un agneau que ce peuple avait été sauvé de la destruction en Egypte ; (Exode 12.13) et dès lors, chaque année, Israël célébrait la Pâque en immolant un anneau, en souvenir de cette délivrance.

Cette idée de l'agneau pascal n'est point étrangère au Nouveau Testament ; (Jean 19.36 ; 1Pierre 1.19) pourquoi le serait-elle au passage qui nous occupe, comme le prétendent plusieurs interprètes qui préfèrent s'en tenir exclusivement à la prophétie d'Esaïe ? Les deux opinions se concilient parfaitement.

- Quoi qu'il en soit, si le Précurseur désigne le Sauveur par cette image d'un agneau, ce n'est point seulement pour indiquer l'innocence et la douceur qui le distinguent, mais afin d'exprimer ce grand fait qui est le but essentiel de sa mission : il ôte le péché du monde. Le verbe que nous traduisons ainsi signifie également porter (Matthieu 11.29 ; 16.24) et ôter (Jean 11.39 ; 17.15 ; 1Jean 3.5)

Ce dernier sens doit être préféré, car si Jean-Baptiste avait désigne seulement le Messie comme portant le péché, l'évangéliste, pour traduire sa parole, se fût servi du verbe employé par les Septante dans Esaïe 53.

Les deux idées, loin de s'exclure, se supposent du reste l'une l'autre. La sainte victime ôte le péché, parce que d'abord elle l'a porté : elle en a fait l'expiation en présence de la justice divine. C'est la grande vérité qui se retrouve clairement enseignée dans la prophétie de, (Esaïe 53.4,5,6,10,11,12) comme dans tout le Nouveau Testament. (Matthieu 8.17 ; Luc 22.37 ; Actes 8.32 ; 1Pierre 1.19 ; 2.24 ; 1Jean 2.2 ; 3.5)

- Le péché (non les péchés) exprime la maladie morale et la culpabilité de l'homme, dans son ensemble, dans son unité réelle et profonde. (Jean 8.21 ; Romains 6.1, etc.)

- Le péché du monde, dit enfin Jean-Baptiste, et cette grande parole élève la pensée jusqu'à l'universalité de l'œuvre de la rédemption qu'accomplira le Sauveur, et qui ne sera révélée aux apôtres eux mêmes que beaucoup plus tard. (Actes 10. ; et 1Jean 2.2)

- Mais cette déclaration du Précurseur est trop lumineuse, trop évangélique, pour que bien des interprètes ne l'aient pas déclarée inadmissible dans sa bouche et n'aient pas soupçonné l'évangéliste de lui avoir prêté sa propre pensée.

Il suffirait peut-être, pour réfuter cette opinion d'observer que Jean-Baptiste était prophète, le plus grand des prophètes, qu'il était éclairé par l'Esprit de Dieu, et qu'il connaissait les Ecritures où se trouvait annoncée à l'avance toute l'œuvre divine du salut, (Esaïe 52.13-15 ; 53.11 ; 19.23-25 ; Genèse 12.3) mais nous préférons rappeler simplement avec Meyer que, comme il le déclare positivement lui même, (verset 33) il avait reçu de Dieu une révélation au sujet du Sauveur qu'il devait annoncer.

Jean-Baptiste vit Jésus venir à lui, déclarant qu’Il était l'Agneau de Dieu. L'agneau pascal, dans l'effusion et l'aspersion de son sang, la cuisson et la consommation de sa chair, et toutes les autres étapes de l'ordonnance juive, représentait le salut des pécheurs, par la foi en Christ. Les agneaux sacrifiés quotidiennement, matin et soir, ne peuvent se référer qu'à Christ, Celui qui a été sacrifié pour nous racheter devant Dieu, par Son sang.

Jean vint pour prêcher la repentance, c'est pourquoi il dit à ses disciples, qu'ils devaient regarder seulement à Jésus et à Sa mort, pour le pardon de leurs péchés. Il convient à la Gloire de Dieu, de pardonner tous ceux qui dépendent du sacrifice expiatoire de Christ. Ce sacrifice ôte le péché du monde ; il acquiert le pardon pour tous ceux qui se repentent et croient à l'évangile. Ceci ne peut qu’affermir notre foi ; chacun pense : si Christ ôte le péché du monde, alors pourquoi pas le mien ?

Notre Sauveur a porté notre péché, nous en déchargeant par ce fait. Dieu pouvait ôter le péché en supprimant le pécheur, comme il l'a fait auparavant ; mais maintenant, Il a un moyen d’effacer l’iniquité, tout en épargnant le fautif, en faisant Son Fils « péché », en tant que sacrifice d'expiation, pour nous. Portez votre regard vers Jésus, Celui qui efface le péché ; que cela vous fasse haïr vos fautes, et être ensuite résolus à résister fermement au mal. Ne nous attachons pas à ce péché, que l'Agneau de Dieu est venu effacer par Son sang !

Pour confirmer son témoignage à propos de Christ, Jean énonce ce qu’il entendra plus tard, lors de Son baptême, par une déclaration divine. Jean-Baptiste porta ainsi témoignage que Jésus est véritablement le Fils de Dieu. Ces propos terminent le paroles de Jean : Jésus était le Messie promis !

Jean profitait de chaque opportunité pour conduire le peuple à Christ.

      14 The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them twelve names of the twelve Apostles of the Lamb.
      22 I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God, the Almighty, and the Lamb, are its temple.
      23 The city has no need for the sun, neither of the moon, to shine, for the very glory of God illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb.
      27 There will in no way enter into it anything profane, or one who causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.

      Apocalypse 22

      1 He showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb,
      2 in the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
      3 There will be no curse any more. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants serve him.
