Jérémie 16.19

19 à 24. Le prophète, qui ne voit autour de lui et dans l'avenir prochain de son peuple qu'obscurité et ruine, cherche sa force en son Dieu, qui lui fait contempler des compensations inattendues dépassant de beaucoup l'horizon étroit du peuple de Juda ; ce sont les païens entrant dans l'alliance divine, avec ou sans l'ancien peuple de Dieu, qui, chose étonnante, est passé sous silence dans ce tableau de la restauration future. Annoncer que les païens reconnaîtront un jour la vanité de leurs idoles pour confesser l'Eternel, n'était-ce pas le meilleur moyen de confondre ceux qui, en possession du vrai Dieu, allaient à ces idoles ? Cette prophétie s'est accomplie dans l'économie actuelle, où les païens tiennent la place des Juifs dans l'alliance de Dieu (Romains, chapitre 11).

Nos pères : la religion des pères n'est pas pour cela la bonne, comme se le figurent encore aujourd'hui tant de gens qui couvrent du prétexte de la piété filiale leur incrédulité et leur paresse morale.
