Matthieu 2.16

Quand Hérode voit que les sages l’ont trompé, il est très en colère. Les sages lui ont dit à quel moment l’étoile est apparue. C’est pourquoi il donne l’ordre de tuer tous les enfants qui ont deux ans ou moins de deux ans, à Bethléem et dans les environs.
Hérode, voyant que les mages s'étaient joués de lui, fut fort en colère ; et il envoya, et fit tuer tous les enfants qui étaient dans Bethléhem et dans tout son territoire, depuis l'âge de deux ans et au-dessous, selon le temps dont il s'était enquis exactement auprès des mages.
Hérode tua tous les enfants mâles, non seulement de Bethlehem, mais de tous les villages entourant cette ville.

Une colère sans limites, armée d’un pouvoir illicite, amène souvent les hommes à commettre des cruautés horribles. Cela fait partie des injustices que Dieu n'autorise pas ; toute vie, dès sa naissance, est soumise à Sa Justice. La maladie et la mort des enfants en bas âge sont des conséquences du péché originel. Par contre, le meurtre de ces petits était une véritable atrocité.

Nous voyons là, combien la persécution à l’encontre de Christ et de Son Royaume a commencé tôt ! Hérode était alors convaincu qu'il avait fait échouer les prophéties de l'Ancien Testament, ainsi que les efforts des mages pour découvrir Jésus.

Quels que soient les projets habiles et cruels que les hommes peuvent échafauder, les desseins du Seigneur s'accomplissent inéluctablement !
