1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying,2 "Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him."3 When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born.5 They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written through the prophet,6 'You Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least among the princes of Judah: for out of you shall come forth a governor, who shall shepherd my people, Israel.'"7 Then Herod secretly called the wise men, and learned from them exactly what time the star appeared.8 He sent them to Bethlehem, and said, "Go and search diligently for the young child. When you have found him, bring me word, so that I also may come and worship him."9 They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over where the young child was.10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.11 They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Being warned in a dream, he withdrew into the region of Galilee,23 and came and lived in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene." -

Nous avons vu son étoile apparaître en Orient et nous sommes venus l’adorer. »3 Quand le roi Hérode apprit cette nouvelle, il fut troublé, ainsi que toute la population de Jérusalem.4 Il convoqua tous les chefs des prêtres et les maîtres de la loi, et leur demanda où le Messie devait naître.5 Ils lui répondirent : « A Bethléem, en Judée. Car voici ce que le prophète a écrit :6 “Et toi, Bethléem, au pays de Juda, tu n’es certainement pas la moins importante des localités de Juda ; car c’est de toi que viendra un chef qui conduira mon peuple, Israël.” »7 Alors Hérode convoqua secrètement les savants et s’informa auprès d’eux du moment précis où l’étoile était apparue.8 Puis il les envoya à Bethléem, en leur disant : « Allez chercher des renseignements précis sur l’enfant ; et quand vous l’aurez trouvé, faites-le-moi savoir, afin que j’aille, moi aussi, l’adorer. »9 Après avoir reçu ces instructions du roi, ils partirent. Ils virent alors l’étoile qu’ils avaient déjà remarquée en Orient : elle allait devant eux, et quand elle arriva au-dessus de l’endroit où se trouvait l’enfant, elle s’arrêta.10 Ils furent remplis d’une très grande joie en la voyant là.11 Ils entrèrent dans la maison et virent l’enfant avec sa mère, Marie. Ils se mirent à genoux pour adorer l’enfant ; puis ils ouvrirent leurs bagages et lui offrirent des cadeaux : de l’or, de l’encens et de la myrrhe.12 Ensuite, Dieu les avertit dans un rêve de ne pas retourner auprès d’Hérode ; ils prirent alors un autre chemin pour rentrer dans leur pays.La fuite en Égypte
13 Quand les savants furent partis, un ange du Seigneur apparut à Joseph dans un rêve et lui dit : « Debout, prends avec toi l’enfant et sa mère et fuis en Égypte ; restes-y jusqu’à ce que je te dise de revenir. Car Hérode va rechercher l’enfant pour le faire mourir. »14 Joseph se leva donc, prit avec lui l’enfant et sa mère, en pleine nuit, et se réfugia en Égypte.15 Il y resta jusqu’à la mort d’Hérode. Cela arriva afin que se réalise ce que le Seigneur avait dit par le prophète : « J’ai appelé mon fils à sortir d’Égypte. »Le massacre des enfants
16 Quand Hérode se rendit compte que les savants l’avaient trompé, il entra dans une grande colère. Il donna l’ordre de tuer, à Bethléem et dans les environs, tous les garçons de moins de deux ans ; cette limite d’âge correspondait aux indications que les savants lui avaient données.17 Alors se réalisa ce qu’avait déclaré le prophète Jérémie :18 « On a entendu une plainte à Rama, des pleurs et de grandes lamentations. C’est Rachel qui pleure ses enfants, elle ne veut pas être consolée, car ils sont morts. »Le retour d'Égypte
19 Après la mort d’Hérode, un ange du Seigneur apparut dans un rêve à Joseph, en Égypte.20 Il lui dit : « Debout, prends avec toi l’enfant et sa mère et retourne au pays d’Israël, car ceux qui cherchaient à faire mourir l’enfant sont morts. »21 Joseph se leva donc, prit avec lui l’enfant et sa mère et retourna au pays d’Israël.22 Mais il apprit qu’Archélaos avait succédé à son père Hérode comme roi de Judée ; alors il eut peur de s’y rendre. Il reçut de nouvelles indications dans un rêve, et il partit pour la province de Galilée.23 Il alla s’établir dans une ville appelée Nazareth. Il en fut ainsi pour que se réalise cette parole des prophètes : « Il sera appelé Nazaréen. »

Hérode, pour ne pas manquer son but, étend à deux ans le laps de temps qui d'après le récit des mages a pu s'écouler depuis l'apparition de l'étoile.
On a révoqué en doute ce meurtre des enfants de Bethléhem, parce que l'historien Josèphe n'en parle pas. On peut en effet, s'étonner de son silence, mais la conclusion qu'on en tire est arbitraire. Dans le petit bourg de Bethléhem et ses environs, par où il faut entendre quelques maisons isolées autour de ce lieu, il pouvait, selon le calcul de Winer, se trouver dix ou douze enfants mâles au-dessous de deux ans. Or le meurtre de ces enfants, quelque horrible qu'il soit, se perd dans le nombre des crimes de cet Hérode qui, après avoir sacrifié à sa haine soupçonneuse sa femme et deux de ses fils (verset 1, note 1), en fit périr un troisième, Antipater, peu avant de mourir ; qui faisait conduire au supplice des conjurés avec toute leur famille, qui atteint de sa dernière maladie, possédé de fureur contre le peuple de Jérusalem parce qu'il allait se réjouir de sa mort, ordonnait de rassembler dans le cirque de Jéricho tous les principaux de la ville et de les y faire périr dès qu'il aurait expiré, ainsi, disait-il, "qu'il y ait au moins des larmes répandues après ma mort." (Josèphe, Antiq., XVII, 6, 5.)
-Il faut remarquer seulement que le terme de deux ans fixé par Hérode suppose que les mages lui avaient dit que l'étoile leur était apparue depuis plus d'un an déjà. (verset 7) Si cette apparition avait coïncidé avec la naissance de Jésus, un intervalle de plus d'une année se serait écoulé entre cette naissance et la visite des mages, mais cela n'est pas probable : les versets 1 et 2 de notre chapitre semblent indiquer que Jésus était né depuis peu quand arrivèrent les mages, Luc nous dit que le domicile habituel de Joseph et Marie était Nazareth et qu'ils ne furent à Bethléhem qu'en passant. Luc 1.26 ; 2.4,39 enfin l'on sait qu'Hérode est mort avant la Pâque de 750 et l'on estime généralement que Jésus est né dans l'année qui précéda la mort de ce prince.
Le massacre de Bethléhem exécuté quelques semaines après la naissance du Sauveur, a été l'un des tout derniers actes du règne d'Hérode. Il faut donc admettre que l'étoile apparut aux mages un an ou deux avant l'événement qu'elle devait leur signaler, de manière à leur permettre d'arriver de leur lointain pays en Judée vers le temps de son accomplissement.
Une colère sans limites, armée d’un pouvoir illicite, amène souvent les hommes à commettre des cruautés horribles. Cela fait partie des injustices que Dieu n'autorise pas ; toute vie, dès sa naissance, est soumise à Sa Justice. La maladie et la mort des enfants en bas âge sont des conséquences du péché originel. Par contre, le meurtre de ces petits était une véritable atrocité.
Nous voyons là, combien la persécution à l’encontre de Christ et de Son Royaume a commencé tôt ! Hérode était alors convaincu qu'il avait fait échouer les prophéties de l'Ancien Testament, ainsi que les efforts des mages pour découvrir Jésus.
Quels que soient les projets habiles et cruels que les hommes peuvent échafauder, les desseins du Seigneur s'accomplissent inéluctablement !
