Le magicien était juif (verset 6) mais, soit qu'il fût né en Arabie, ou qu'il y eut vécu, il avait adopté le titre arabe d'Elymas qui signifie mage, sage, savant. (De la même racine vient le nom des ulémas docteurs de la loi chez les musulmans.)

Cet homme qui avait renié la religion d'Israël, s'était établi à demeure auprès du proconsul.

Il résistait aux messagers de la bonne nouvelle, (2Timothée 3.8 ; Exode 7.11,22) cherchant à détourner de la foi le proconsul, sur lequel il craignait de perdre son influence intéressée.

Le texte occidental indique expressément ce motif, en ajoutant (D, Peschito, etc.) parce qu'il les écoutait très volontiers.

Elymas constatait que le proconsul subissait l'influence de la parole divine.
