Babylone la grande... L'épithète la grande se retrouve chez les anciens écrivains (Pausanias et Strabon) et paraît avoir été une qualification ordinaire de cette ville. Elle méritait ce titre d'honneur, plus que toutes les autres villes de l'antiquité auxquelles il est parfois donné (Ninive, Jonas 1.2 ; Hamath, Amos 6.2). C'est ici que Jean a puisé le nom de Babylone la grande qui paraît plusieurs fois dans l'Apocalypse (Apocalypse 16.19 et ailleurs).

Que j'ai bâtie. La fondation de Babylone remonte aux temps qui suivirent le déluge (Genèse 11.1-5) ; mais Nébucadnetsar avait considérablement embelli la ville ancienne, et il avait de plus construit une ville nouvelle sur la rive orientale de l'Euphrate. Les inscriptions nous font connaître ce monarque comme un grand constructeur et nous parlent des immenses travaux qu'il exécuta dans et autour de Babylone. Les ruines qui couvrent le sol se composent pour la plupart de briques marquées de son nom. Tous les écrivains anciens rendent témoignage de la magnificence de cette cité. Esaïe 13.19 l'appelle l'ornement des royaumes, la parure de l'orgueil des Chaldéens.

Ses murs d'enceinte étaient peut-être ce qu'on y voyait de plus prodigieux ; aussi étaient-ils rangés par les Grecs, avec les jardins suspendus, parmi les sept merveilles de l'univers. Construits en briques reliées par du bitume, ils avaient, au dire d'Hérodote qui visita Babylone après la conquête des Perses, presque 100 mètres de hauteur, 24 de largeur et 90 kilomètres de tour. Deux chariots attelés de quatre chevaux y passaient de front. Le carré régulier formé par cette enceinte couvrait une superficie de 513 kilomètres carrés, ainsi plus étendue que le département de la Seine et sept fois plus grande que l'enceinte fortifiée de Paris. Il est vrai que ce vaste espace était en partie occupée par des champs cultivés qui garantissaient cette cité, en apparence imprenable, des dangers de la famine.

La ville elle-même était située des deux côtés de l'Euphrate ; son centre devait se trouver là où s'élève aujourd'hui le village de Hillah. Elle était traversée du nord au sud par 25 rues parallèles, larges de 50 mètres, qui se croisaient à angles droits avec 25 autres rues pareilles, ce qui faisait 50 grandes rues aboutissant à 100 portes d'airain ; ces rues donnaient à la ville par leurs entrecroisements 625 places et 676 quartiers couverts d'habitations. Les maisons avaient de 3 à 4 étages. Les rues perpendiculaires au fleuve étaient fermées sur ses bords par des portes d'airain ; le long des deux rives couraient des murs en briques qui reliaient les angles nord-ouest et sud-est de la grande muraille extérieure. Les deux parties de la ville étaient mises en communication par un pont à piles de pierre de la longueur de 1 stade (185 mètres). Les poutres qui en formaient le tablier étaient enlevées le soir, pour que ce passage ne devint pas le théâtre de brigandages nocturnes. Sur la rive orientale (gauche) était la citadelle royale, on y a retrouvé les restes du palais de Nébucadnetsar, élevé par lui en quinze jours, suivant Josèphe et les inscriptions. Treize hectares forment la surface de cet édifice magnifique. Près de là, se trouvaient les fameux jardins suspendus composés de terrasses superposées, dans les voûtes desquelles on pouvait circuler. Nébucadnetsar les construisit pour donner à son épouse Amytis, originaire du pays montagneux de Médie, l'image d'une montagne artificielle. La ruine de l'édifice des jardins suspendus présente aujourd'hui une surface de quinze hectares. Enfin, à l'angle nord-ouest de la ville, du même côté que le grand palais et les jardins suspendus, était situé le grand temple de Mérodac (le Jupiter chaldéen, comparez Esaïe 46.1, note), l'un des plus anciens édifices de Babylone. Il est représenté aujourd'hui par la ruine nommée Babîl, haute de 40 mètres et longue de 180, la plus imposante de toutes celles de Babylone. Voyez la Planche 2. Sur la rive occidentale (droite) du fleuve se trouvait le temple de Bel-Nébo, tour colossale à sept étages et qui devait avoir 80 mètres (d'après d'autres 200 mètres) de haut. Les ruines de cet édifice s'appellent aujourd'hui Birs-Nimroud. Ce que nous venons de dire suffit pour montrer que cette ville offrait sur un seul point les monuments les plus imposants de la puissance de l'homme. Comme c'était Nébucadnetsar qui avait fait de Babylone la plus grande cité du monde et une résidence royale digne de lui et de son empire, son orgueil ne s'explique que trop aisément. Il éclate surtout dans ces mots : par la puissance de ma force et à l'honneur de ma majesté. Le propre de l'orgueil qui se divinise est de se considére comme l'auteur, l'instrument et le but, en un mot comme le centre de tout.

Le mouvement d'orgueil auquel le roi s'abandonna en cet instant ne fut d'ailleurs, dans l'ensemble de sa vie, que comme la goutte d'eau qui fait déborder le vase.
