La vérité, remarque M. Godet, est présentée comme une contrée inconnue dans laquelle l'Esprit sert de guide (grec montre le chemin).

Si l'on conserve le texte reçu (B, A, majuscules), il est chargé d'y introduire les disciples, car ils sont encore dehors ; d'après la leçon de Sin., D, ils sont déjà entrés dans ce domaine, et l'Esprit a charge de le leur faire explorer.

Enfin la leçon de Sin., B, A, qui place le mot toute après vérité, présente la vérité entière comme un tout organique. (Weiss.)

Cette vérité est, en dernière analyse, Jésus luimême. (Jean 14.6)

- C'est sur cette promesse, magnifiquement accomplie dès le jour de la Pentecôte, que se fonde l'autorité divine des enseignements apostoliques. Il en résulte encore qu'il n'y a plus d'autres révélations de la vérité à attendre dans l'économie présente. Il en ressort enfin que la parole du verset 12 ne peut servir de fondement ni à la théorie de la tradition romaine, ni à un certain mysticisme qui prétend à des révélations de l'Esprit en dehors du témoignage apostolique.

Le Saint-Esprit peut révéler toute la vérité, parce qu'il n'enseigne pas de son chef (grec de lui-même) tirant ses instructions ne son propre fonds, mais en parfaite harmonie avec le Père et le Fils. (versets 14,15)

Jésus formule ainsi le fondement de l'autorité de l'Esprit à peu près dans les mêmes termes que celui de sa propre autorité : l'une et l'autre reposent sur l'unité de volonté et d'action avec Dieu, le Père. (Jean 5.19 et suivants, Jean 7.17,18 ; 8.28 ; 12.49)

C'est à cette parfaite révélation de l'Esprit que l'apôtre Paul rend témoignage ; (1Corinthiens 2.10,11) car "l'Esprit sonde toutes choses, même les profondeurs de Dieu."

Ces choses à venir appartiennent aussi à la "vérité tout entière" que l'Esprit devait révéler. Il rendra claires et vivantes, dans l'esprit des apôtres, les prédictions de Jésus concernant l'avenir de son royaume, ses progrès successifs sur la terre, et son glorieux accomplissement. Bengel fait remarquer que notre évangéliste, qui a retenu et rapporté cette promesse, a eu la plus grande part à sa réalisation, puisque, par son livre de l'Apocalypse, il est devenu le prophète de la nouvelle alliance.

      Apocalypse 22
