7 à 10 Facilités accordées à l'israélite qui n'a pas le moyen de (dont la main n'atteint pas à ce qui est suffisant pour) se procurer une tête de menu bétail. Au lieu d'une brebis on d'une chèvre, il peut offrir deux tourterelles ou deux pigeonneaux, l'une comme victime pour le péché, l'autre comme holocauste.

Pourquoi pas toutes deux comme victimes pour le péché ? Parce que, dans le sacrifice pour le péché, on offre une vie pour une autre vie. Cette notion de substitution serait troublée si le sacrifice pour le péché consistait en deux ou plusieurs victimes. Mais, d'autre part, une seule tourterelle ne suffisait pas aux deux conditions du sacrifice pour le péché, l'aspersion du sang et la combustion de la graisse. Comment détacher la graisse d'une tourterelle pour la consumer sur l'autel ? La brûler tout entière n'était pas possible non plus ; car c'eût été enlever au sacrifice pour le péché sa physionomie particulière et le confondre avec l'holocauste. C'est pour cela qu'une seconde tourterelle devait fournir les morceaux de graisse. Quant à celle qui avait fourni le sang, elle était donnée au prêtre ; voir 6.26,29.

On voit ici le soin avec lequel la loi tenait compte de la position des pauvres, et en même temps la conséquence avec laquelle elle procédait dans ses moindres déterminations.
