In that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, and said, "I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight."

En cette même heure,...ces mots lient intimement les paroles de Jésus qui vont suivre à celles qui précédent, et indiquent la cause de ce tressaillement de joie qu'il éprouve. Il n'y a donc pas de doute que la place assignée par Luc à cette effusion de l'âme du Sauveur ne soit la vraie.

Matthieu (Matthieu 11.28) la fait suivre par la touchante invitation adressée aux âmes "fatiguées et chargées."

Bien que Jésus n'ait approuvé la joie de ses disciples qu'avec une sage réserve, (verset 20, note) il s'y associe pleinement ; mais sa joie à lui a des motifs infiniment plus élevés, parce que son regard pénètre jusqu'au fond ces premiers succès de son règne et les triomphes dont ils seront suivis.

Tandis que l'Evangile nous fait fréquemment connaître les tristesses et les larmes du Sauveur, c'est ici à peu près le seul endroit où il nous parle de sa joie et même de son allégresse (sens du terme original).

- Une variante dit : Il tressaillit de joie en l'Esprit-Saint c'est-à-dire que ce serait l'Esprit de Dieu qui aurait inspiré à Jésus ce vif mouvement de joie.

Malgré l'autorité de Tischendorf et d'autres critiques, qui se fondent sur Sin., B, C, D, l'Itala et la syr., il est probable que la leçon du texte reçu doit être préférée. Elle signifie que c'est dans l'intimité profonde de son être spirituel que Jésus éprouva cette sainte joie.

Grec : bon plaisir devant toi, en ta présence, c'est-à-dire à ton jugement, selon ta sagesse et ta miséricorde. (Matthieu 11.26, note.)
