World English Bible He said to them, "Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man's life doesn't consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses."

Il leur dit, à tous ses auditeurs : Voyez et gardez-vous, non seulement de l'avarice, mais de toute avarice ! Tel est le vrai texte.

L'avarice ou la cupidité est, d'après l'étymologie, le désir d'avoir davantage, et non seulement l'épargne sordide.

Quelle solennité dans cet avertissement ! La déclaration qui le motive, assez compliquée dans l'original, peut se rendre en ces termes : parce que, quand les biens surabondent à quelqu'un, sa vie n'est pas tirée de ses biens. C'est-à-dire que ni les biens ni leur surabondance n'assurent la vie ; ni la vie du corps qui est dans les mains de Dieu, (verset 20) ni la vie de l'âme qui ne peut être garantie en aucune manière par la possession de biens matériels.
