Ce chef, ou président de la synagogue, adresse ses reproches à la foule, et ainsi indirectement à Jésus qu'il n'ose pas attaquer en face.

Son discours est appelé une réponse (ayant pris la parole, grec répondant, Matthieu 11.25). Il répond en effet à l'acte de Jésus. Cet acte de puissance dont il vient d'être témoin lui impose quelque retenue, et il craint d'exciter l'indignation des autres témoins de cette scène.

Les paroles, ici rapportées, ne sont qu'une partie de la répréhension qu'il fit entendre à la foule. C'est ce qu'indique le verbe à l'imparfait : il disait, qui suppose une harangue plus prolongée.

Dans son aveugle attachement à la légalité, il en appelle au quatrième commandement, et il ne s'aperçoit pas que les termes mêmes dont il se sert : (grec) venant soyez guéris, rendent un éclatant témoignage à la réalité des œuvres du Sauveur.
