Les trois évangélistes rapportent ce trait à la suite de la bénédiction des petits enfants. Plusieurs détails caractéristiques et importants sont propres à Marc.

- Jésus sortait de la maison où il s'était arrêté (vers. 10), et se mettait en chemin pour continuer son voyage.

- Par ces mots : étant accouru, s'étant jeté à ses genoux, Marc peint d'une manière dramatique la scène et nous montre l'empressement de cet homme à obtenir de Jésus une réponse à la question qui le tourmentait, aussi bien que la profonde vénération que le Maître lui inspirait.

Ce jeune homme riche montra un grand intérêt pour le domaine spirituel. Il demanda à Jésus ce qu'il devait faire pour connaître la félicité éternelle. La plupart des hommes aspirent aux biens de ce monde, quels qu’ils soient, Psaume 4:6.

Le jeune homme demanda quelle attitude pratiquer ici-bas, afin de pouvoir jouir dans le ciel d’une grande récompense. Christ encouragea cette démarche, en le félicitant pour sa foi, et en lui dictant une ligne de conduite. Mais un problème surgit au cours de l’échange entre Jésus et ce jeune homme : ce dernier Lui demandant ce qu'il devait faire en plus, pour obtenir la vie éternelle, Christ voulut alors vérifier les bonnes intentions de cette demande : le jeune homme avait-il la volonté de supporter sa « croix » pour le présent, dans l'attente d'une « couronne » dans le ciel ?

Cet homme était désolé de ne pas pouvoir devenir facilement un disciple de Christ : il ne pouvait pas obtenir la vie éternelle et garder en même temps ce qu'il possédait ici-bas. Il partit donc, attristé.
