Matthieu 5.25

« Si tu es en procès avec quelqu’un, dépêche-toi de te mettre d’accord avec lui pendant que vous êtes encore en chemin. Tu éviteras ainsi que ton adversaire ne te livre au juge, que le juge ne te remette à la police et qu’on ne te jette en prison.
Si quelqu’un porte des accusations contre toi, dépêche-toi de t’entendre avec ton adversaire pendant que tu es encore en chemin avec lui. Sinon, ton adversaire remettra l’affaire entre les mains du juge, qui fera appel aux huissiers de justice, et tu seras mis en prison.

Matthieu 1.22-2

Ce verset 25 est la suite immédiate du verset 24. Jésus recommande encore le devoir de la réconciliation, mais sous une autre forme. Il suppose deux adversaires un créancier et un débiteur, (verset 26) dont le premier emmène l'autre chez le juge pour se faire payer, comme cela se pratiquait chez les anciens.

Le conseil que donne le Seigneur à celui qui va être accusé est de se mettre promptement d'accord avec son adversaire tandis qu'il est en chemin, c'est-à-dire qu'il en a le temps encore. S'il ne le fait pas, il court le risque d'être livré au juge, puis à l'huissier (exécuteur du jugement), et d'être jeté en prison.

Est-ce là tout le sens de cette exhortation ? Dans ce cas, elle ne renfermerait qu'un bon conseil de prudence, de sagesse dans les affaires de cette vie, et c'est ainsi que l'entendent quelques interprètes. Mais comme ici Jésus exhorte ses disciples à la réconciliation avec leurs frères et cela à cause de leur responsabilité envers Dieu, (versets 23,24) il est évident que notre verset 25 devient une image, une parabole, présentant un sens religieux plus élevé.

Tous les hommes sont en chemin vers le juge, qui est Dieu ; tous ont envers leurs frères des torts dont il leur sera demandé compte, qui suffiraient pour les faire condamner ; et s'il est impossible même d'apporter à Dieu une offrande sans être réconcilié avec un frère offensé, comment espérer être absous devant le tribunal céleste ? Il ne resterait en perspective que la prison, c'est-à-dire, non le purgatoire, selon les interprètes catholiques, non le hadès ou lieu invisible d'attente, selon d'autres, mais le châtiment, comme cela ressort clairement de l'image.

- On voit combien cette sérieuse parabole rentre harmoniquement et profondément dans le discours de Jésus, et que c'est à tort que quelques interprètes pensent que Matthieu l'a arbitrairement intercalée ici, parce que Luc lui assigne une autre place dans son évangile. Luc 12.58,59 Pourquoi ne pas admettre plutôt que ce court enseignement parabolique peut avoir été présenté plus d'une fois ?
