Faire l'aumône, c'est exercer la miséricorde, telle est la signification étymologique du mot grec d'où dérive notre mot aumône. Ce sens indique déjà le motif intérieur d'où doit procéder la bienfaisance.

L'exercer en sonnant de la trompette devant soi, c'est-à-dire avec ostentation, c'est l'affaire des hypocrites.

Quelques interprètes pensent que chez les Juifs les riches faisaient réellement sonner de la trompette en certains jours pour rassembler les indigents. Il n'est pas nécessaire de recourir a cet usage, qui d'ailleurs n'est point prouvé, pour comprendre la métaphore qu'emploie le Sauveur. Ensuite, faire l'aumône dans les synagogues et dans les rues, n'est pas un mal en soi, mais ce qui en fait un mal, c'est ce but : être glorifié des hommes. C'est là la récompense que cherchent les hypocrites, ils l'ont déjà (le verbe grec composé signifie qu'ils la tiennent déjà, mise à part) et n'auront plus rien à réclamer. (Matthieu 6.,16,5.12, note.)

Toutes les fois qu'on vous loue, craignez cette parole du Sauveur : En vérité je vous le dis, vous avez reçu votre récompense. Parole si importante que Jésus-Christ la répète à chaque action qu'il marque en particulier dans ce chapitre. Bossuet.
