29 à 32 Pourparlers avec Hobab.

Et Moise dit... Cette scène eut lieu au moment où l'on se mettait en marche.

Hobab. Nous connaissons trois noms de parents de Séphora, femme de Moïse : Réuël, Jéthro et Hobab ; ces noms sont accompagnés tous trois du terme de chôten, signifiant parent par alliance, soit beau-père, soit beau-frère. Il n'y a guères d'hésitation à avoir quant au premier et au troisième ; Réuël doit être le père et Hobab le frère de Séphora. Quant au nom de Jéthro, voir à Exode 3.1. Si ce nom désignait un troisième personnage, ce ne pourrait être qu'un fils de Réuël, un frère de Hobab. Ce peut aussi être un titre (son Excellence). Ces différentes hypothèses ont été, soutenues, sans que l'une d'elles s'impose. Mais il ne nous semble pas que Jéthro puisse être le même personnage que Hobab ; car pourquoi dans sa visite à Sinaï, Exode chapitre 18, serait-il appelé Jéthro, et ici Hobab ? Le plus naturel est donc de penser que Hobab était le fils de Réuël (Jéthro) et qu'il était venu, comme Réuël un an auparavant, visiter Moïse.

Le terme rendu par beau-père peut s'appliquer grammaticalement soit à Réuël, soit à Hobab.

L'Eternel a promis... : Exode 34.10-11. Moïse offre à Hobab, ami des Israélites, d'être associé aux bénédictions que l'Eternel a promises à son peuple. Cette largeur de Moïse s'accorde bien avec la promesse faite à Abraham que toutes les nations de la terre seraient bénies en sa postérité.
