Si Dieu renonce à rejeter le peuple ce n'est pas dire pourtant qu'il le réhabilite. Entre l'abandonner tout à fait et redevenir son Dieu, il y a un intermédiaire : c'est de continuer à le conduire, mais au moyen d'un agent d'ordre inférieur. C'est là le sens du verset 34 expliqué ensuite plus clairement par 33.1-4

Va maintenant, conduis ce peuple. C'est l'ordre de départ immédiat de Sinaï pour Canaan.

Voici, mon ange ira. Ce terme mon ange (mon envoyé) est assez général pour pouvoir être appliqué de différentes manières. Dans 23.20,23 ce nom renfermait la plus grande, des promesses. Car l'ange que Dieu promettait à Moïse d'envoyer avec lui pour conduire le peuple, n'était rien moins que l'Ange en qui est son nom, la parfaite révélation de son essence, en particulier de sa sainteté (verset 21), la manifestation suprême de Dieu dans laquelle Dieu serait lui-même. Mais ici le terme mon ange ira signifie au contraire : Un quelconque de mes envoyés ; pour moi, je cesse d'être moi-même votre conducteur. Ce sens ressort clairement de 33.3-4. Si Dieu ne veut plus, les guider lui-même, c'est par ménagement pour ce peuple, trop mal disposé pour que la présence de l'Eternel dans son sein ne l'exposât pas à être consumé à chaque instant. Il enverra donc, avec eux un être dont le contact immédiat et journalier ne sera plus pour eux un danger permanent. On comprend la désolation du peuple à l'ouïe de ce message qui constate sa dégradation (33.4)

Cependant Dieu n'abandonne pas entièrement les rênes. Il se réserve d'intervenir si les circonstances l'exigent : Et au jour où je jugerai... Le moment pourra venir, même malgré cette abdication partielle, où il exercera lui-même le jugement définitif.
