N'est-ce pas là demander au peuple des choses que l'homme ne saurait faire ? Assurément, si cette parole ne s'adressait pas à des membres de l'alliance qui n'ont qu'à se placer sous l'influence du Dieu qui leur parle, pour recevoir de lui la force d'accomplir ce qu'il leur commande : Commande ce que tu veux et donne ce que tu commandes. Ainsi parle à son Dieu le cœur pieux en présence de pareils ordres du Seigneur ; et il éprouve alors la vérité du mot de l'apôtre, Philippiens 2.13. Du reste les promesses du même prophète (1.18-19 ;36.26) montrent bien dans quel sens il entendait cet impératif : faites-vous : Ouvrez votre cœur à Dieu de telle sorte qu'il puisse lui-même faire cela en vous. Faire, pour l'homme, c'est demander et consentir à recevoir.

Un cœur nouveau : une nouvelle manière de sentir ; un esprit nouveau : une nouvelle manière de penser ; de là la nouvelle direction de la volonté, qui détermine une conduite nouvelle.

Quoi de plus tendre, de plus paternel que cet appel : Et pourquoi mourriez-vous ? après tant de paroles sévères ! Il semble que les compassions divines, longtemps contenues, se fassent jour enfin et éclatent.
