11 à 21 Paul résiste à Céphas.

Antioche de Syrie, siège d'une Eglise nombreuse, composée en grande partie de païens convertis. (Comparer Actes 13.1 et suivants) Paul était retourné à Antioche après le concile de Jérusalem. (Actes 15.33-35) L'époque où Pierre y vint n'est pas indiquée, mais il est probable que ce fut plus tard, pendant un séjour que Paul fit à Antioche entre son second et son troisième voyage missionnaire (Actes 18.22,23, notes.)

On peut traduire plus exactement : "Parce qu'il était blâmé, accusé," ou même "condamné," sans doute par des chrétiens d'Antioche que sa conduite scandalisait. Les versets suivants montrent à quel sujet. Paul raconte cet événement pour convaincre d'autant mieux les Galates de l'indépendance de son apostolat, et de l'importance qu'ils devaient attacher à la doctrine fondamentale de la justification par la foi seule. Ce récit complète celui qui précède et forme l'introduction la plus naturelle à la partie de l'épître qui va exposer de nouveau la grande doctrine en question.

Quand Paul vit Pierre agir, comme s’il tendait à ternir la vérité de l'Évangile et la paix de l'église, il ne craignit pas de le blâmer, malgré le caractère fougueux de ce dernier.

Paul vit que Pierre et les autres frères ne répondaient pas aux principes de l'Évangile, malgré la profession de leur témoignage, à savoir que par la mort de Christ le « mur de séparation » entre Juifs et Gentils n'existait plus, et que l'observation de la loi de Moïse n'avait plus de raison d'être ; comme l'offense de Pierre était publique, Paul le blâma publiquement.

Nous pouvons constater une grande différence, d’une part, entre la prudence de Paul, qui a supporté et pratiqué temporairement les vaines cérémonies de la loi, et d’autre part, la conduite timide de Pierre, qui, en s'écartant des Gentils, incita ses auditeurs à penser que ces rites étaient nécessaires.
