Moïse réunissait encore en sa personne tous les pouvoirs théocratiques. Mais c'est la dernière occasion dans laquelle il fonctionne comme grand-prêtre. Il le fait sans avoir offert aucun sacrifice pour lui-même. Ce trait place la personne de Moïse à une grande hauteur.

L'égorgea. Il semble que c'est Aaron qui aurait dû égorger la victime après avoir mis sur sa tête son péché et celui de ses fils. Mais l'ordre Exode 29.11 était positif. Les cérémonies d'installation sortent à plusieurs égards des règles fixées plus haut pour les sacrifices en général.

Prit le sang... sur les cornes de l'autel. Encore ici le cérémonial diffère du rite prescrit chapitre 4 pour les sacrifices pour le péché. Moïse ne porte pas le sang dans le Lieu saint pour en oindre les cornes de l'autel d'or (4.5-6 ; 6.30). Tout se passe ici près de l'autel d'airain, auprès duquel devaient à l'ordinaire fonctionner les sacrificateurs.

Purifia l'autel. Ainsi la propitiation concerne non seulement les hommes qui doivent exercer le sacerdoce, mais encore l'autel d'où s'élèvera vers Dieu la fumée des victimes offertes. Comme les hommes communiquent à l'autel leur souillure, celui-ci la communique aux offrandes présentées sur lui. L'onction n'avait pas pu avoir pour effet de le purifier. Elle n'avait fait que le soustraire à l'usage profane et le consacrer au service de Dieu : il restait encore à le rendre véritablement apte à cet usage.
