En conservant la leçon du texte reçu, ce magnifique cantique se divise naturellement en trois sentences, dont les deux premières sont parallèles, et dont la troisième indique la cause ou le fondement des deux autres.

Par la rédemption du monde que chantent les anges, Dieu s'est glorifié dans les lieux très hauts, aux yeux des anges et des justes ; (Luc 19.38 ; Ephésiens 3.10) la paix est faite sur la terre, car les hommes se sont réconciliés avec Dieu et les uns avec les autres.

Enfin, il en est ainsi, grâce à la manifestation de la miséricorde infinie de Dieu, de sa bienveillance envers les hommes ; tel a été son bon plaisir. Il faut remarquer l'harmonie de ces contrastes : gloire et paix, dans les lieux très hauts et sur la terre, Dieu et les hommes.

Et ce n'est pas un vœu qu'expriment les anges : ils chantent ce qui est, dans le dessein de Dieu, et ce qui sera pleinement réalisé en tous ceux qui auront part à la rédemption qu'ils annoncent. Jusque-là, nous pouvons et devons faire des vœux et des prières pour le plein accomplissement de cette œuvre divine.

- Ce verset présente une variante qui se lit dans Sin., A, B, D, l'Itala, et qui est admise par la plupart des critiques. Elle donne au dernier membre de la phrase un autre tour et, si l'on adopte l'explication vulgaire, un sens tout différent : Paix sur la terre aux hommes de bonne volonté.

Nous aurions donc ici l'expression, non de la bienveillance de Dieu, de son amour, mais d'une disposition du cœur de l'homme nécessaire pour avoir la paix. La Vulgate a popularisé en France cette version, qui convient parfaitement aux tendances pélagiennes du catholicisme. Mais la leçon du texte reçu a pour elle des autorités critiques considérables, la plupart des majuscules et des versions.

Et même en admettant la variante, il faut traduire : aux hommes de la bienveillance (de Dieu), ou, comme Rilliet : "parmi les hommes de prédilection," car le mot grec exprime, non un sentiment de l'homme envers Dieu, mais une disposition miséricordieuse de Dieu envers l'homme. (Matthieu 11.26 ; Ephésiens 1.5,9 ; Philippiens 2.13) Il en est ainsi du verbe formé de la même racine. (Matthieu 3.17 ; 17.5 ; Marc 1.11 ; Luc 3.22)
