C'est ici que paraît pour la première fois ce nom d'apôtres (envoyés) avec l'indication de leur nombre précis, douze.

Chez les Juifs on donnait ce titre d'apôtres à des hommes de confiance qui portaient les circulaires des chefs de synagogue, recueillaient les offrandes pour le temple et entretenaient le zèle des communautés de la "diaspora".

Dans le Nouveau Testament, les frères chargés de recueillir la collecte pour les Eglises de Judée sont appelés ainsi (2Corinthiens 8.23) et Paul nomme Epaphrodite l'apôtre des Philippiens. (Philippiens 2.25)

Jésus lui-même donna ce titre à douze de ses disciples, après les avoir choisis entre tous les autres. (Luc 6.13,Jean 6.70) Il les établit solennellement pour être ses témoins. (Actes 1.8) Aussi occupèrent-ils dans l'Eglise une place à part, y exerçant, au nom du Seigneur, une autorité universellement reconnue. (Actes 2.42,Ephésiens 2.20 ; 3.5)

C'est encore sur leur témoignage, le seul par lequel nous connaissions Jésus-Christ, que repose la foi de l'Eglise.
