Province romaine dont la Palestine faisait partie et qui comprenait les contrées païennes situées au nord de cette Galilée où Jésus exerçait son ministère. Sa renommée se répandit dans ces pays, et plusieurs surent profiter de la connaissance qu'ils acquirent ainsi de lui. (Voir par exemple Matthieu 15.21 et suivants)

Parmi les divers genres de maladies énumérés ici, il en est deux qui ne sont pas sans difficulté quant à leur nature : Que faut-il entendre par lunatiques et démoniaques Le premier de ces termes est le participe d'un verbe qui signifie proprement être sous l'influence de la lune. Il parait désigner une catégorie spéciale d'épileptiques, sur la maladie desquels la lune exerçait, croyait-on, une certaine influence.

Les évangiles ne nous racontent qu'une seule guérison de lunatique, (Matthieu 17.15) et le terme ne se retrouve pas ailleurs dans le Nouveau Testament.

- Quant aux démoniaques, dont les guérisons sont si fréquemment rapportées dans les évangiles synoptiques, il sera plus à propos d'y revenir à l'occasion d'une de ces guérisons. (Voir Matthieu 8.28 et suivants, notes.)
