Tu les emportes comme par un torrent : d'une manière aussi soudaine qu'irrésistible. On peut traduire, et peut-être avec plus de raison : Emportés par toi comme par un torrent (ou une trombe d'eau), ils ne sont qu'un songe (proprement : un sommeil). La vie, au moment où ils la perdent, leur apparaît comme un songe ou un sommeil, dont on n'a conscience qu'au moment où on en sort.

Au matin... L'idée du matin semble être amenée par celle du sommeil. De nouvelles générations surgissent, après celles qui ont été emportées (c'est là le sens des mots : ils se renouvellent), mais pour être retranchées à leur tour. Cette image de l'herbe qui fleurit pour se faner, est développée Psaumes 103.15-16 ; Esaïe 40.6-8 (comparez 1Pierre 1.24) ; la forme succincte sous laquelle elle se présente ici témoigne de l'antériorité de ce passage sur ceux que nous venons de citer.
