Il reçut le signe qu'est la circoncision comme un sceau de la justice, de la foi, c'est-à-dire comme la confirmation de cette justice qu'il possédait déjà antérieurement par la foi (Grec : la justice de la foi, celle (foi) en incirconcision), uniquement par la foi, sans aucune prétention possible à une justice par les œuvres de la loi.

Afin qu'il fût père de tous ceux qui croient sans être circoncis (grec en état d'incirconcision, tout en étant incirconcis) : tel était le but de cette dispensation dans le plan divin.

La dernière proposition du verset : pour que la justice leur soit imputée (C, D : soit imputée à eux aussi) indique le but de leur entrée dans la famille du patriarche : c'était pour qu'ils eussent part eux aussi au même mode de justification que lui qu'ils fussent sauvés comme lui.

Les vrais enfants d'Abraham sont donc, non pas ceux qui descendent de lui selon la chair (l'apôtre ne les mentionne qu'en seconde ligne, verset 12), mais ceux qui ont la foi d'Abraham, à quelque peuple qu'ils appartiennent, et qui, n'ayant que la foi, se trouvent précisément dans la situation d'Abraham quand il fut justifié.
