Les premiers mots sont une introduction non seulement au commandement suivant, mais à tout le Décalogue ; ils seront répétés plus tard à l'occasion de divers commandements particuliers. On peut traduire de deux maniÚres : ou en faisant du mot l'Eternel (Jahvé) une partie du sujet :
Moi, l'Eternel, je suis ton Dieu ; c'est-à-dire : Moi, l'Etre absolu, de qui tout dépend, je suis ton Dieu particulier ; je t'appartiens, comme toi à moi ; ou bien l'on peut joindre le mot l'Eternel à l'attribut :
Je suis l'Eternel ton Dieu...
Ce dernier sens parait exigĂ© par le verset 5, oĂč se retrouve la mĂȘme formule et oĂč elle doit certainement ĂȘtre traduite de cette maniĂšre. Le sens est donc : Moi qui te parle, je suis l'Etre des ĂȘtres, qui condescends Ă  ĂȘtre ton Dieu, et qui en cette qualitĂ© rĂ©clame de toi obĂ©issance.

En mĂȘme temps que Dieu rappelle au peuple sa souverainetĂ© universelle et particuliĂšre, il lui facilite la soumission en Ă©veillant dans son cƓur le sentiment de la reconnaissance par le souvenir de la dĂ©livrance signalĂ©e qu'il vient d'opĂ©rer en sa faveur. Dieu parle Ă  IsraĂ«l Ă  la seconde personne du singulier ; tout le peuple est Ă  ses yeux une personne morale.
