L'Eternel verra (Jéhova Jiré). Nous traduisons ici littéralement le même mot que nous avons dû rendre au verset 8 par : verra à trouver. Le sens est : Dans tous les cas qui pourront se rencontrer, l'Eternel verra le besoin et saura trouver le moyen d'y répondre comme il l'a fait cette fois.

De là le proverbe populaire usité au temps de l'auteur : Sur la montagne de l'Eternel, il (l'Eternel) sera vu, ce qui équivaut au nom qu'Abraham vient de donner à ce lieu, en ce sens que, où Dieu intervient pour secourir (voit) il est aussi vu lui-même. Cela s'applique d'abord à la montagne où Abraham a fait le premier cette expérience et sans doute aussi à la montagne du temple, où l'Eternel ne cessait de se manifester.

Il est clair qu'il n'y a rien à conclure de cette application à la montagne du temple pour le temps où tout ce récit a été composé, puisque cette notice a pu être intercalée postérieurement, pour établir le rapprochement entre la colline du sacrifice et celle du temple.

Nous avons renoncé à la traduction habituelle : sera pourvu, parce que le passif du verbe rad (voir) n'a jamais ce sens en hébreu.

C'est probablement de l'ensemble des idées exprimées dans ce verset qu'on a tiré plus tard le nom de Morija (apparition de l'Eternel). Comparez verset 2.
