Les pauvres disciples n'avaient que trop bien entendu cette parole : je m'en vais, (versets 2,12) mais ils avaient moins bien saisi celle-ci : je reviens à vous ; (versets 3,18) de là leur tristesse et leur trouble.

C'est pourquoi Jésus, plongeant un regard dans leur cœur, voudrait leur faire sentir que leur amour pour lui devrait leur faire de son élévation auprès du Père un motif de joie. Ils prendraient part à la joie qu'il éprouve lui-même de quitter ce monde de péché et de souffrance pour retourner auprès du Père et partager sa félicité et sa gloire.

C'est ici peut-être le seul passage des évangiles où Jésus pense à lui-même, et tire de son propre repos le motif d'une exhortation.

Mais "les mots : si vous m'aimiez, sont d'une exquise délicatesse. Par là Jésus trouve le moyen de leur faire de la joie un devoir de tendresse. Il n'énonce pas ici l'idée de l'activité plus puissante dont cette élévation sera pour lui le moyen. (Jean 17.12) Il en appelle uniquement à leur cœur d'amis." Godet.

C'est ainsi également que Tholuck, R. Stier, MM. Luthardt, Weiss et d'autres exégètes comprennent cette belle pensée. Ceux qui (de Wette, Meyer) pensent que Jésus invite ses disciples à considérer l'intérêt qu'ils ont à son élévation, qui lui permettra de leur assurer une protection plus puissante, (comparez Jean 16.7) ne tiennent pas compte de cette parole : si vous m'aimiez.

Parce que : il faut remarquer avant tout cette particule importante, car elle nous montre que Jésus, dans cette parole : le Père est plus grand que moi, donne simplement la raison pour laquelle ses disciples doivent se réjouir de son retour auprès de son Père.

En isolant cette déclaration de son contexte, on l'a sollicitée en sens divers pour éclairer par son moyen le mystère des relations du Fils avec son Père. Mais quel sujet de joie les disciples auraient-ils bien trouvé dans une théorie abstraite à laquelle ils n'auraient rien compris ? Jésus s'exprime ainsi, en ayant conscience qu'il est le Fils de Dieu, celui qui "a reçu du Père d'avoir la vie en lui-même," (Jean 5.26) et en même temps qu'il est "la Parole faite chair,"

Celui qui, "existant en forme de Dieu, s'est dépouillé lui-même en prenant une forme de serviteur fait à la ressemblance des hommes," et qui allait "s'abaisser encore en devenant obéissant jusqu'à la mort, même jusqu'à la mort de la croix." (Philippiens 2.6-8) Dans cette position qui était alors la sienne, il éprouvait en son âme sainte, comme l'observe Bengel, un sentiment profond de son humiliation qu'il ne pouvait s'empêcher d'exprimer parfois (Marc 10.18 ; 13.32, voir la note) et qui le faisait soupirer après le terme de l'épreuve. (Luc 12.50)

Comment donc n'aurait-il pas éprouvé une joie profonde et sainte à l'aspect si prochain de son élévation auprès du Père ? C'était pour lui rentrer en possession de la gloire éternelle, objet de sa dernière prière ; (Jean 17.5) c'était sa réintégration dans toutes les prérogatives divines dont il allait jouir dans une pleine communion d'essence et d'amour avec Dieu, son Père. Cette joie il invite ses disciples à la partager avec lui.

Obéissant à son invitation, l'apôtre Paul, après avoir décrit, dans les paroles que nous venons de rappeler, le profond abaissement du Sauveur, célèbre son élévation avec amour, (Philippiens 2.9-11) et la joie qu'il exprime dans ce chant de triomphe est celle de l'Eglise tout entière. (Ephésiens 1.20-23)

C'est à ce point de vue que Luther, Calvin, MM. Luthardt et Godet envisagent ce passage. "Christ, dit Calvin, ne compare point ici la divinité du Père avec la sienne, ni sa nature humaine avec l'essence divine du Père ; mais plutôt son état présent avec la gloire céleste dans laquelle il allait être reçu bientôt. C'est comme s'il disait : Vous désirez de me retenir dans le monde ; mais il vaut mieux que je monte au ciel."

Quant à la divinité de Jésus-Christ, cette parole la proclame hautement ; car si un homme, un ange du ciel disait : Dieu est plus grand que moi, il émettrait une affirmation que son évidence même rendrait oiseuse. Il ne faut pas, quand Jésus nous parle de sa joie, que l'exégèse transforme cette joie en dogmatique.

Christ prolonge les attentes de Ses disciples au-delà de ce qu'ils pensaient être le bonheur parfait. Le temps de Jésus ici-bas, était désormais compté : aussi les enseignaient-ils abondamment.

Quand nous tombons malades et que nous sommes proches de la mort, nous ne sommes guère capables de parler à ceux qui nous entourent ; alors, si nous avons un bon conseil à proposer, faisons-le quand nous sommes encore en bonne santé !

Remarquez la perspective de conflit que Christ avait, non seulement avec les hommes, mais aussi avec les puissances des ténèbres. Satan cherche toujours à nous culpabiliser par notre péché ; il a voulu troubler le Seigneur, mais il n'a rien trouvé qui puisse L’accuser.

La meilleure preuve de notre amour pour le Père est d'obéir à Ses commandements. Réjouissons-nous des victoires du Sauveur sur Satan, le prince de ce monde. Prenons exemple sur Son amour et sur Son obéissance envers Dieu !
