Mort et perdu, tel est l'état moral de tout homme qui ne vit pas en Dieu. (Comparer Matthieu 8.22 ; Ephésiens 2.1 ; 5.14)

Dieu seul, en effet, est la source de la vie et la destination suprême de tout être intelligent. Revenir à Dieu, c'est donc revenir à la vie et retrouver sa destination éternelle.

- Jésus décrit dans cette parabole le péché et ses suites amères, la repentance et le bonheur ineffable de la réconciliation avec Dieu ; mais il ne se présente pas comme le médiateur de cette réconciliation.

Dans d'autres déclarations, il indique nettement l'œuvre de la rédemption qui seule permettra à l'homme de rentrer en grâce auprès de Dieu et de recevoir l'esprit d'adoption. (Matthieu 20.28 ; 26.28, et souvent dans l'évangile de saint Jean)

Quand cette œuvre aura été accomplie, elle pourra être exposée avec des développements proportionnés à son importance. On aurait donc bien tort d'opposer les enseignements de Jésus-Christ à ceux des apôtres et, en particulier, de s'appuyer sur notre parabole pour nier la nécessité de la rédemption. Tout le christianisme ne saurait être renfermé dans une parabole.
