World English Bible You shall make an altar of earth for me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your cattle. In every place where I record my name I will come to you and I will bless you.

Le rejet de la main de l'homme pour représenter un tel Dieu s'étend jusqu'à la confection de l'autel sur lequel on lui présente les sacrifices et les offrandes.

Un autel de terre, ou bien aussi, d'aprĂšs verset 25, de pierres brutes sur lesquelles le fer n'a point passé ; c'est-Ă -dire que les matĂ©riaux de l'autel doivent ĂȘtre employĂ©s Ă  l'Ă©tat de nature, afin d'ĂȘtre une reprĂ©sentation et comme un abrĂ©gĂ© de cette portion de l'univers qu'habite l'adorateur. Dieu a parlĂ© du haut du ciel oĂč il habite ; l'autel, au moyen duquel IsraĂ«l l'honore, doit ĂȘtre le symbole de la terre mĂȘme d'oĂč monte le culte.

Il n'y a pas dans cette prescription contradiction avec l'ordre de se servir d'airain et de bois dans la construction de l'autel des holocaustes (27.1) ; car l'autel lui-mĂȘme devait ĂȘtre formĂ© de terre ou de pierres non taillĂ©es ; les matĂ©riaux travaillĂ©s Ă  la main n'en Ă©taient que le cadre.

En quelque lieu que je fasse souvenir de mon nom. Ces mots ne doivent pas ĂȘtre rattachĂ©s grammaticalement Ă  ce qui prĂ©cĂšde ; car cet appendice rendrait la phrase lourde et traĂźnante, et la proposition suivante aurait quelque chose de brusque. Ces mots amĂšnent et expliquent la promesse qui suit : Partout oĂč..., si tu m'adores en ce lieu-lĂ , je viendrai et bĂ©nirai.
Dieu fait souvenir de son nom chaque fois qu'il ajoute une nouvelle rĂ©vĂ©lation Ă  celles qu'il a dĂ©jĂ  donnĂ©es de sa personne. Le sens de la promesse est donc celui-ci : Ce n'est pas seulement ici Ă  SinaĂŻ, la montagne de Dieu, que je m'approcherai de toi pour te bĂ©nir. C'est en tout lieu oĂč, Ă  la suite d'une manifestation de ma part, tu m'Ă©lĂšveras un autel et m'offriras ton sacrifice et ton culte.

Il est entiĂšrement faux d'interprĂ©ter ces mots, comme on l'a fait, en disant : Partout oĂč l'on me consacrera un lieu de culte, comme si Dieu autorisait le peuple Ă  lui Ă©riger des autels partout oĂč il le trouvera bon pourvu que ce soit Ă  lui qu'ils soient consacrĂ©s. On oublie que le mot hĂ©breu hizkir : faire souvenir, aussi bien que la premiĂšre personne : Je, impliquent une manifestation de Dieu lui-mĂȘme qui rendra saint l'endroit oĂč elle aura eu lieu (3.5) et lĂ©gitimera par lĂ  l'Ă©tablissement d'un autel. C'est ainsi qu'Ă  cĂŽtĂ© de l'autel des holocaustes, Ă©rigĂ© dans le Tabernacle, nous voyons, au temps des Juges, GĂ©dĂ©on Ă©lever un autel et Manoah offrir un sacrifice (Juges chapitres 6 et 13), ainsi qu'autrefois Jacob Ă  BĂ©thel (GenĂšse 35.1), Ă  la suite d'une manifestation divine. On a aussi entendu ces mots dans ce sens : Partout oĂč se fixera mon Tabernacle, vous m'Ă©lĂšverez un pareil autel.... et je vous bĂ©nirai lĂ .
Mais les termes du texte n'ont pas ce sens, et il n'était point nécessaire de bùtir à chaque campement un nouvel autel. Pendant des siÚcles, on a usé en Israël, et à bon droit, de cette autorisation expressément accordée ici d'établir un autel et d'offrir un sacrifice dans les endroits consacrés par une manifestation de l'Eternel. Il n'y a rien de commun entre cet usage et le culte des hauts-lieux, toujours blùmé dans l'Ecriture.
