1 Now it happened in those days, that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.2 This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.3 All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city.4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David;5 to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant.6 It happened, while they were there, that the day had come that she should give birth.7 She brought forth her firstborn son, and she wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.Un ange apparaît à des bergers

22 When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord"),24 and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, "A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons."25 Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him.26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.27 He came in the Spirit into the temple. When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law,28 then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,29 "Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word, in peace;30 for my eyes have seen your salvation,31 which you have prepared before the face of all peoples;32 a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel."La prophétie de Siméon
33 Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him,34 and Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, "Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against.35 Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."Anne, la prophétesse
36 There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,37 and she had been a widow for about eighty-four years), who didn't depart from the temple, worshipping with fastings and petitions night and day.38 Coming up at that very hour, she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem.Le retour à Nazareth

41 His parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover.42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast,43 and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. Joseph and his mother didn't know it,44 but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day's journey, and they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances.45 When they didn't find him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him.46 It happened after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions.47 All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.48 When they saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I were anxiously looking for you."49 He said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Didn't you know that I must be in my Father's house?"50 They didn't understand the saying which he spoke to them.51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. -

La naissance de Christ. (Luc 2:1-7)
Le temps imparti par Dieu pour envoyer son Fils ici-bas, était arrivé : Il allait être conçu d'une femme, qui allait se plier au décret de recensement, dans sa propre ville. Les circonstances de cette naissance reflètent une certaine pauvreté : Christ est né dans une crèche ; Il est venu dans le monde pour n’y séjourner que quelque temps, comme l’on pourrait le faire dans un gîte de passage : Il nous enseigne à faire de même.
Cette naissance est annoncée aux bergers. (Luc 2:8-20)

Christ avec les docteurs, dans le temple. (Luc 2:41-52)Par le péché, nous sommes devenus des enfants rejetés, sans réelle puissance et malheureux : tel était Christ. Il savait combien nous sommes peu disposés à être logés, habillés, ou nourris d'une façon peu enviable : nous désirons en fait avoir des enfants gâtés et bien parés ; les pauvres envient rapidement les riches, et ces derniers les dédaignent tout aussi vite...
Mais lorsque, par la foi, nous voyons le Fils de Dieu avoir revêtu la nature humaine et avoir été couché dans une crèche, notre vanité, notre ambition, et notre jalousie sont interpellées. Nous ne pouvons plus alors, face à cette humble image, rechercher de grandes choses pour nous-mêmes ou nos enfants !
8 Les anges mentionnés dans ce texte furent les « hérauts » qui annoncèrent le Sauveur nouveau-né ; ils ne furent cependant uniquement envoyés vers quelques modestes bergers, humbles et pieux, occupés à leur tâche : veiller sur leur troupeau.Nous ne sommes pas évincés d’une visite divine, lorsque nous pratiquons une vocation honnête, tout en demeurant en communion avec Dieu. Laissons Lui l'honneur de superviser notre travail !
« Gloire à Dieu dans les lieux très hauts ». On ne peut qu’être poussé à louer Dieu, quand on voit la grâce qu’Il a témoignée envers les hommes, en envoyant le Messie ! Toutes les œuvres de Dieu manifestent Sa gloire, mais la rédemption du monde, en Son Fils, en est le paroxysme. La merveilleuse Volonté divine, en envoyant Jésus parmi nous, a amené la paix en ce bas monde. Cette paix est ici manifestée dans tout le bien qui nous est largement octroyé : Christ a revêtu notre nature humaine.
C’est parole est certaine, elle est attestée par une innombrable compagnie d'anges, et tout à fait digne de toute acceptation : Dieu, par Sa Volonté, a envoyé le Messie parmi les hommes, pour apporter la Paix sur cette terre.
Les bergers ne perdirent pas de temps : ils vinrent en hâte vers l’endroit qui leur fut indiqué par les anges. Ils furent ravis et témoignèrent autour d'eux que cet enfant était le Sauveur, qu'Il était le Christ le Seigneur. Marie observa avec soin tous ces faits : ils ne pouvaient que faire naître des sentiments de sainteté.
Nous devrions être moins enclins à commettre des erreurs de jugement et pratiquer au contraire le chemin de la sanctification, en considérant ces faits avec une grande intention. Il nous est proclamé qu’un Sauveur est né, Christ le Seigneur. Que cela puisse être une bonne nouvelle pour tous !
21 Notre Seigneur Jésus n'est pas né dans le péché, et en tant que tel, n’avait pas réellement besoin d’être circoncis : Il n’avait pas à être mortifié, n’ayant pas une nature corrompue, ni besoin de renouveler Sa sainteté.Dans Son cas, cette ordonnance de la circoncision était cependant le gage de Sa parfaite obéissance à toute la loi, au sein des souffrances et des tentations qui Le menèrent jusqu'à la mort, pour nous sauver.
Marie alla jusqu'au temple pour offrir les sacrifices de « purification ». Joseph présenta aussi le saint enfant Jésus, car en tant que fils premier-né, il devait être présenté au Seigneur, et racheté selon la loi.
Présentons nos enfants au Seigneur, Celui qui nous les a donnés, Le suppliant de les racheter du péché et de la mort, et de les rendre saints pour Son Service !
25 Le même Esprit Saint, Celui qui anima l'espérance de Siméon, de voir le Sauveur, lui donna également beaucoup de joie. Ceux qui veulent voir spirituellement Christ doivent d’abord se rendre à Son « temple » !Nous voyons dans ce texte une véritable confession de foi de Siméon : l’Enfant qu’il tenait dans ses bras était le Sauveur, le Salut en personne, le Salut préparé par Dieu. Il est offert maintenant ici-bas. La vision du monde semble bien terne, comparée à l’espérance de celui qui possède Christ, et qui a le salut en perspective ! Notons ici à quel point la mort d'un homme bon (Siméon) peut se présenter calmement : il part vers l’au-delà, la conscience en paix avec Dieu. Ceux qui « possèdent » Christ peuvent ainsi aborder la mort avec sérénité.
Joseph et Marie étaient émerveillés par tout ce qu’on disait au sujet de cet Enfant. Siméon leur montra également les raisons qu’ils avaient de se réjouir, dans une crainte respectueuse.
Jésus, Sa doctrine, et Son peuple, continuent encore aujourd’hui à subir de l'opposition ; Sa Vérité et Sa Sainteté sont toujours niées et blasphémées ; la prédication de Sa Parole est encore une pierre d'achoppement pour les hommes.
L’affection personnelle de quelques-uns envers le Seigneur se manifestera dans l’attachement qu’ils Lui témoignent ; l’aversion secrète des autres envers Jésus sera par contre révélée par leur inimitié envers Lui. Les hommes seront finalement jugés selon les pensées de leur cœur, en ce qui concerne Christ.
Jésus allait devoir souffrir ; sa mère, par son affection envers son fils, allait souffrir avec Lui...
36 Bien qu’à cette époque une certaine dégradation morale régnât dans la Maison de Dieu, ce Dernier ne l'a cependant pas laissée sans témoin. Anne ne quittait pas le temple, elle y œuvrait en permanence. Elle priait sans cesse : c’était pour elle une vocation spirituelle et en toutes choses elle servait Dieu.Ceux qui connaissent Christ ont de grandes raisons de remercier Dieu. Anne témoignait de Sa Personne. Que ces deux exemples de sainteté, Siméon et Anne, puissent encourager spirituellement ceux qui portent des cheveux blancs, véritable couronne de gloire : qu’ils soient trouvés dans le « chemin de la Justice » ! Avant que leurs lèvres ne soient muettes, dans la tombe, ils doivent faire monter avec force leurs louanges vers le Rédempteur.
En toutes choses, Christ a été rendu semblable à Ses frères : Il est donc passé par l'enfance et l'adolescence, comme les autres enfants, cependant sans commettre le péché, avec des preuves manifestes de la nature divine qui L’animait. Par l'Esprit de Dieu, toutes les facultés de Jésus démontrèrent qu’Il était différent des autres jeunes. En effet, ces derniers commettaient certaines fautes, par la nature de leur cœur, ce qui se manifestait dans leurs paroles ou leurs actes ; Christ, quant à Lui était rempli de Sagesse, sous l'influence du Saint-Esprit : tout ce qu’Il a prononcé et accompli a été parfait, malgré Son jeune âge. Les enfants de Son entourage montraient la corruption inhérente à leur nature humaine... Nulle autre chose que la Grâce de Dieu ne reposait sur les épaules de Jésus !
41 C'est en l'honneur de Christ que les enfants doivent assister à l’adoration qui Lui est rendue dans les réunions publiques.Les parents de Jésus ne sont pas retournés à Nazareth, tant que les sept jours de la fête ne furent pas terminés. Il est convenable de rester jusqu'à la fin d'une ordonnance religieuse, et de se trouver parmi ceux qui disent : « qu’il est bon d'être ici » !
Ceux qui ont perdu toute communion avec le Seigneur, après avoir bénéficié des avantages qui en découlaient, doivent réfléchir, et se demander où, quand et comment, ils ont pu perdre ce contact spirituel ; ils doivent alors le nouer de nouveau. Ceux qui désirent retrouver leur relation avec Christ, doivent se rendre où l’on peut Le célébrer ; c’est en cet endroit qu’ils peuvent espérer Le rencontrer.
Ses parents trouvèrent Jésus dans le temple, là où les docteurs de la loi enseignaient ; Il était assis là, écoutant leurs enseignements, posant des questions, et répondant aux leurs avec une telle sagesse, qu’Il étonnait grandement ceux qui L'entendaient.
Les jeunes gens doivent rechercher la connaissance de la Vérité divine, en assistant à l’enseignement de l'évangile : ils ne doivent pas hésiter à poser de multiples questions aux anciens et aux enseignants pour parfaire leurs connaissances. Ceux qui, dans l’épreuve, recherchent Christ, Le trouveront toujours avec une grande joie.
Jésus répondit à Ses parents : « ne savez-vous pas que je dois être dans la maison de Mon Père ? Je dois m'occuper de Ses affaires ». Quelle belle réponse ! Il est bon que les enfants de Dieu, en conformité à Christ, s'occupent « des affaires » de leur Père céleste, et que toute autre occupation leur fasse place.
Bien qu'il soit le Fils de Dieu, Jésus était cependant assujetti à ses parents ici-bas ; comment les enfants insensés et faibles de ce monde peuvent-ils trouver une excuse à toute désobéissance à leurs parents ? Si toutefois nous pouvons négliger les paroles obscures des hommes, nous ne devons pas agir de même envers les ordonnances divines : même si elles peuvent sembler incompréhensibles à première vue, elles deviendront claires par la suite et il sera facile de s’y soumettre.
Les individus les plus éminents et les plus sages peuvent apprendre de cet « Enfant » admirable et divin, ce qu’est la véritable grandeur d'âme, en sachant reconnaître leur propre place et leur rôle ici-bas ; qu’ils apprennent à rejeter tout amusement et plaisir non compatibles avec leur état de chrétiens !

Il y a là, en effet, une sérieuse difficulté et l'on remplirait des volumes de tout ce qui a été écrit pour l'aplanir.
Mais il faut remarquer que la première de ces erreurs, c'est-à-dire la confusion des deux recensements, n'existe pas.
En effet, le but évident de Luc, dans ce verset, est précisément d'établir une distinction entre les deux recensements ; car dire que ce fut ici le premier suppose nécessairement qu'il y en eut un second. Ce second eut lieu, en effet, comme le rapporte l'historien Josèphe (Antiq. XVIII, 1), non sous le règne d'Hérode, mais après la destitution d'Archélaüs, et lorsque la Judée, devenue province romaine, eut été placée sous l'autorité de Quirinius, gouverneur de Syrie.
Ce recensement, resté célèbre dans l'histoire juive, parce qu'il donna lieu à une révolte sanglante du peuple, était connu de tout le monde ; et Luc l'ignorait moins que personne, puisqu'il en parle avec détail dans le livre des Actes (Actes 5.37) où il nomme le principal auteur de cette révolte, "Judas le Galiléen, aux jours du dénombrement."
- Il ne reste donc que l'erreur de chronologie qui fait Quirinius gouverneur de Syrie sous le règne d'Hérode, à l'époque de la naissance de Jésus. Cette erreur est considérable ; aussi a-t-on eu recours pour l'expliquer à toutes les ressources de la critique du texte et de l'exégèse. Le texte offre bien quelques légères variantes, mais qui sont sans importance pour la question.
Plusieurs critiques, Tholuck, de Pressensé, en prenant le mot premier (recensement) dans un sens différent, ont cru pouvoir traduire ainsi : "Ce recensement eut lieu avant que Quirinius fût gouverneur de Syrie."
D'autres interprètes, en changeant un simple accent grec au premier mot de la phrase, traduisent au lieu de : ce recensement, "le premier recensement luimême" (celui qu'on appelle premier depuis la domination romaine et qui est si connu), "eut lieu sous le gouvernement de Quirinius."
Le verset 2 serait d'après M. Godet, qui a recours à cette accentuation, "une parenthèse explicative que Luc a intercalée de son chef dans le récit tiré du document qu'il employait. Il importait à Luc de bien distinguer le cens dont il parlait ici de cet autre cens postérieur et de rappeler que, malgré ce nom de premier dénombrement, sous lequel celui-ci était resté gravé dans la mémoire du peuple, il y en avait eu auparavant un autre, généralement oublié, accompli dans de tout autres conditions."
- Ceux qui estimeront ces tentatives d'explication, sinon inadmissibles, du moins quelque peu forcées, trouveront plus simple de supposer que Quirinius, qui, on le sait par l'histoire (Tacite Ann. III,48), eut les honneurs du triomphe pour une victoire remportée à cette époque sur une peuplade de Cilicie, exerça déjà alors un commandement en Syrie et présida comme commissaire impérial au recensement dont parle Luc.
Le mot traduit ici par gouverneur s'appliquait à toute charge élevée dans l'Etat. Cette explication, en faveur de laquelle on peut faire valoir des raisons sérieuses, est celle de Hug, Neander. (Voir le Commentaire de M. Godet sur notre passage.)
- Ceux qu'aucune de ces interprétations ne satisfait, attribuent à Luc, sur ce point, un défaut de mémoire, qu'il est bien difficile d'admettre à propos de faits d'une si grande notoriété, surtout en présence de sa déclaration si positive, d'après laquelle il a "suivi avec exactitude toutes ces choses dès l'origine." (Luc 1.3)
