Après avoir reçu le pardon de son péché, le chrétien ne craint rien autant que d'y retomber. De là cette demande. Quel en est l'objet ? Non que Dieu ne nous tente point, "il ne tente personne" intérieurement Jacques 1.13 ; non seulement qu'il "ne nous laisse pas tomber dans la tentation" quand déjà nous y sommes ; mais qu'il ne nous y amène pas, c'est-à-dire que, puisque tous les événements de notre vie sont dans sa main, il ne permette pas que nous soyons placés dans des situations extérieures telles que nous y trouverions la tentation et des occasions de chute. (Matthieu 26.41) Mais comme de telles situations, de telles épreuves sont presque inévitables en ce monde, cette prière s'appuie sur des promesses divines. 1Corinthiens 10.13.

Etre préservé de la tentation, n'épuise pas le besoin profond de l'âme dans son état d'épreuve ; son ardente aspiration est d'être délivrée du mal. On peut traduire ainsi, ou bien du malin, du démon de qui procèdent les tentations. Le mot grec permettant l'un et l'autre sens, les opinions des interprètes sont très divisées.

Avec Luther et la version anglaise, nous préférons l'idée du mal comme plus générale, répondant mieux à tous les besoins et s'appliquant au tentateur lui-même. Etre délivré du mal sous toutes ses formes, mal physique, mal moral ; du péché et de toutes ses conséquences ; des tentations et de celui qui en est l'instigateur ; de la vanité sous laquelle soupire la créature : telle est la prière d'un exilé, d'un captif, d'un affligé qui implore son libérateur.

D'autres interprètes, tout en traduisant du mal, limitent le sens de ce terme au mal moral, au péché. Les catholiques et les luthériens font de ce dernier soupir de l'oraison dominicale une prière distincte de la précédente, et obtiennent sept demandes, le nombre sacré des Ecritures.

- Le texte reçu ajoute cette belle doxologie : "Car à toi est le règne, et la puissance, et la gloire pour les siècles. Amen." Quoique très ancienne, elle n'appartient certainement pas au texte primitif, selon le témoignage des plus anciens manuscrits, des versions et des Pères. Tous les critiques modernes l'excluent du texte. Dans les manuscrits où elle se trouve, elle apparaît avec de nombreuses variantes. Son introduction dans le texte est due à des copies qui servaient au culte public, où elle était bien à sa place et où l'on peut la conserver, car elle ne renferme que des expressions bibliques, propres à inspirer une grande confiance en Celui qui exauce la prière.
