Luc 1.17

Devant lui ; ce pronom ne peut se rapporter qu'au sujet qui précède, le Seigneur leur Dieu ; ce qui est en harmonie avec Malachie 3.1, où l'Eternel dit : "Voici, j'envoie mon messager, et il préparera la voie devant moi," d'où il résulte que celui qui précède le Messie, précède Jéhova lui-même, qui vient vers son peuple et vers notre humanité en son Fils bien-aimé. (Comparer Jean 12.41 avec Esaïe 6.1 et suivants)

- C'est encore dans Malachie (Malachie 4.5) que le précurseur est annoncé comme un second Elie. Le peuple à l'époque du Sauveur, se fondant sur cette prophétie, attendait la réapparition du prophète. (Matthieu 17.10 ; Marc 6.15 ; Jean 1.21)

L'ange dit que le précurseur sera revêtu de l'esprit et de la puissance de ce prophète ; il en aura la force et l'énergie d'action, parce qu'il sera animé du même esprit.

Grec : "pour convertir les cœurs des pères vers les enfants" (même verbe qu'au verset 16).

Ces mots font partie d'une pensée ainsi exprimée dans le prophète Malachie : (Malachie 4.6) "et il (Elie) ramènera (ou convertira) le cœur des pères aux fils et le cœur des fils à leurs pères." Ce second membre de la phrase est retranché dans notre citation qui y substitue ces mots : et les rebelles à la sagesse des justes.

Déjà dans l'explication des paroles du prophète, les interprètes se partagent entre deux opinions : les uns y voient simplement la promesse d'un rapprochement, d'une réconciliation entre les enfants et les pères, divisés par le péché ; d'autres donnent à cette prophétie un sens plus large et plus religieux ; ils entendent par ce mot les pères, les ancêtres, les patriarches, et en général les hommes pieux du peuple d'Israël.

Les fils sont leurs descendants, qui se sont éloignés de leur piété en s'éloignant de Dieu ; il leur manque le seul vrai lien des cœurs, l'amour de Dieu, en sorte que les pères ont honte de leurs enfants et les enfants de leurs pères ; (Esaïe 29.22,23 ; 63.16) et c'est cet abîme qu'Elie viendra combler.

La même différence d'interprétation se produit à l'égard de notre verset. L'une et l'autre opinion sont admissibles, mais bien des raisons militent en faveur de la dernière. D'abord, il est difficile de donner, soit au ministère d'Elie, soit à celui de JeanBaptiste, un but et un résultat aussi restreint que celui d'une réconciliation dans les familles.

Ensuite, après cette action puissante attribuée au précurseur, la conversion de plusieurs en Israël, (verset 16) comment donner au même verbe un sens si différent dans le verset qui suit ? (verset 17)

Enfin, n'est il pas évident qu'en substituant à ces mots du prophète : "et le cœur des fils à leurs pères," ceux-ci : et les rebelles à la sagesse des justes, l'ange généralise la pensée, et attribue au précurseur une influence beaucoup plus vaste et plus religieuse ?

Les rebelles ne sont pas ici les fils, mais les incrédules en général, qu'il s'agit de convertir, afin qu'ils aient la sagesse des justes, seule vraie sagesse, puisqu'elle consiste pour l'homme à retrouver l'harmonie avec Dieu.

Ces derniers mots du discours de l'ange résument très bien le résultat général du ministère de Jean-Baptiste. Lui ne peut que préparer le peuple pour le Seigneur, afin qu'il soit tout disposé à le recevoir. Alors le Seigneur lui-même fera le reste. (Matthieu 3.11,12)

- On s'est étonné de voir un ange citer l'Ecriture Et pourquoi ? Le diable aussi la cite ; (Matthieu 4.6) mais, du reste, la simple allusion qui se trouve ici aux paroles d'un prophète peut n'être que la forme dont l'évangéliste, ou même le document qu'il cite, a revêtu la pensée de l'ange.
