Le mot vêtements est pris les deux fois dans un sens figuré : c'est l'image de la justice dont Dieu revêt ses enfants en Jésus-Christ, la sainteté, la pureté de la vie nouvelle. (Esaïe 61.10 ; Matthieu 22.11,12 ; Romains 13.14, etc.)

Souiller ce vêtement-là par des péchés volontaires, en retombant dans la mort spirituelle, (verset 1) est d'autant plus dangereux qu'il ne s'agit plus ici du vieil homme, mais de l'homme nouveau, qui abuse des grâces qu'il a reçues. C'est contre ce terrible danger que sont dirigés des avertissements tels que ceux-ci : Hébreux 6.4-6 ; 10.26-29 ; 12.25.

- Le petit nombre de personnes (Grec : de noms) qui, à Sardes, n'avaient pas été atteintes de ce mal, sont l'objet d'une glorieuse promesse : ils seront revêtus de vêtements blancs. (versets 4,5) Jean verra plus d'une fois dans ses visions de la vie future (Apocalypse 6.11 ; 7.9,13,14) les rachetés parés de ces vêtements blancs, qui distinguaient les vainqueurs, et étaient le symbole de la pureté et de la sainteté parfaites.

Elles en sont dignes, dit le Seigneur des personnes auxquelles il promet cette gloire, non qu'elles l'eussent méritée par leurs œuvres, car leur fidélité était une grâce de Celui qui seul nous rend et nous conserve purs ; mais elles avaient fait valoir ce don de la grâce avec humilité et conscience et devaient d'après l'ordre de Dieu, recevoir davantage. (Matthieu 25.14-30)
