1. Ville de Benjamin, un peu au Sud de Guéba : ne pas confondre ces deux noms, malgré leur similarité de forme et de sens ; ils sont nettement distingués dans Jos 18:24,28, Esa 10:29. On l'identifie avec les ruines actuelles de Tell el-Foûl, entre Rama et Jérusalem ; les fouilles pratiquées par des savants américains ont montré que ce lieu, habité à l'époque cananéenne, était fortifié dès les débuts de la royauté israélite. Lieu de l'outrage infâme commis sur la femme du Lévite d'Éphraïm, et de la terrible vengeance qu'en tirèrent sur la tribu de Benjamin les autres tribus coalisées (Jug 19,20). Voy. allusion à cet enlèvement : Os 5:8 9:9 10:9. Lieu sacré (=Guibéa de Dieu) où il y eut aussi une garnison de Philistins (1Sa 10:5 13:2). Saül, après avoir été oint par Samuel, y rencontra une troupe de prophètes qu'il suivit en prophétisant (1Sa 10:10). C'était là son lieu d'habitation (1Sa 10:26) appelé parfois, pour ce motif, Guibéa de Saül (1Sa 11:4 15:34, Esa 10:29). Ce fut aussi son quartier général pendant ses luttes contre les Philistins (1Sa 13:16 et suivant). Sept de ses fils y furent pendus, sous David, pour satisfaire au ressentiment des Gabaonites (2Sa 21:6). Ce fut la résidence de Ittaï, un des chefs d'armée de David (2Sa 23:29) et de Micaja, mère du roi de Juda Abija (2Ch 13:2). Ses habitants durent fuir lors de l'avance de l'armée assyrienne sur Jérusalem (Esa 10:29).

3. Petit-fils de Caleb (1Ch 2:49) ; nom probablement géographique.

  27 וַיָּ֨קָם אֲדֹנֶ֜יהָ בַּבֹּ֗קֶר וַיִּפְתַּח֙ דַּלְת֣וֹת הַבַּ֔יִת וַיֵּצֵ֖א לָלֶ֣כֶת לְדַרְכּ֑וֹ וְהִנֵּ֧ה הָאִשָּׁ֣ה פִֽילַגְשׁ֗וֹ נֹפֶ֙לֶת֙ פֶּ֣תַח הַבַּ֔יִת וְיָדֶ֖יהָ עַל־הַסַּֽף׃
  
  28 וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אֵלֶ֛יהָ ק֥וּמִי וְנֵלֵ֖כָה וְאֵ֣ין עֹנֶ֑ה וַיִּקָּחֶ֙הָ֙ עַֽל־הַחֲמ֔וֹר וַיָּ֣קָם הָאִ֔ישׁ וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃
  
  29 וַיָּבֹ֣א אֶל־בֵּית֗וֹ וַיִּקַּ֤ח אֶת־הַֽמַּאֲכֶ֙לֶת֙ וַיַּחֲזֵ֣ק בְּפִֽילַגְשׁ֔וֹ וַֽיְנַתְּחֶ֙הָ֙ לַעֲצָמֶ֔יהָ לִשְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר נְתָחִ֑ים וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֶ֔הָ בְּכֹ֖ל גְּב֥וּל יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
  
  30 וְהָיָ֣ה כָל־הָרֹאֶ֗ה וְאָמַר֙ לֹֽא־נִהְיְתָ֤ה וְלֹֽא־נִרְאֲתָה֙ כָּזֹ֔את לְמִיּ֞וֹם עֲל֤וֹת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם עַ֖ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה שִֽׂימוּ־לָכֶ֥ם עָלֶ֖יהָ עֻ֥צוּ וְדַבֵּֽרוּ׃

  13 וְעַתָּ֡ה תְּנוּ֩ אֶת־הָאֲנָשִׁ֨ים בְּנֵֽי־בְלִיַּ֜עַל אֲשֶׁ֤ר בַּגִּבְעָה֙ וּנְמִיתֵ֔ם וּנְבַעֲרָ֥ה רָעָ֖ה מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹ֤א אָבוּ֙ **בְּנֵ֣י בִּנְיָמִ֔ן לִשְׁמֹ֕עַ בְּק֖וֹל אֲחֵיהֶ֥ם בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
  
  14 וַיֵּאָסְפ֧וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֛ן מִן־הֶעָרִ֖ים הַגִּבְעָ֑תָה לָצֵ֥את לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עִם־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
  
  15 וַיִּתְפָּֽקְדוּ֩ בְנֵ֨י בִנְיָמִ֜ן בַּיּ֤וֹם הַהוּא֙ מֵהֶ֣עָרִ֔ים עֶשְׂרִ֨ים וְשִׁשָּׁ֥ה אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ שֹׁ֣לֵֽף חָ֑רֶב לְ֠בַד מִיֹּשְׁבֵ֤י הַגִּבְעָה֙ הִתְפָּ֣קְד֔וּ שְׁבַ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת אִ֥ישׁ בָּחֽוּר׃
  
  16 מִכֹּ֣ל ׀ הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֗ה שְׁבַ֤ע מֵאוֹת֙ אִ֣ישׁ בָּח֔וּר אִטֵּ֖ר יַד־יְמִינ֑וֹ כָּל־זֶ֗ה קֹלֵ֧עַ בָּאֶ֛בֶן אֶל־הַֽשַּׂעֲרָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א יַחֲטִֽא׃
  
  17 וְאִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל הִתְפָּֽקְד֗וּ לְבַד֙ מִבִּנְיָמִ֔ן אַרְבַּ֨ע מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ שֹׁ֣לֵֽף חָ֑רֶב כָּל־זֶ֖ה אִ֥ישׁ מִלְחָמָֽה׃
  
  18 וַיָּקֻ֜מוּ וַיַּעֲל֣וּ בֵֽית־אֵל֮ וַיִּשְׁאֲל֣וּ בֵאלֹהִים֒ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִ֚י יַעֲלֶה־לָּ֣נוּ בַתְּחִלָּ֔ה לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עִם־בְּנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֑ן וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה יְהוּדָ֥ה בַתְּחִלָּֽה׃
  
  19 וַיָּק֥וּמוּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּבֹּ֑קֶר וַיַּֽחֲנ֖וּ עַל־הַגִּבְעָֽה׃
  
  20 וַיֵּצֵא֙ אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עִם־בִּנְיָמִ֑ן וַיַּעַרְכ֨וּ אִתָּ֧ם אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מִלְחָמָ֖ה אֶל־הַגִּבְעָֽה׃
  
  21 וַיֵּצְא֥וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֖ן מִן־הַגִּבְעָ֑ה וַיַּשְׁחִ֨יתוּ בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא שְׁנַ֨יִם וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ אָֽרְצָה׃
  
  22 וַיִּתְחַזֵּ֥ק הָעָ֖ם אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֹּסִ֙פוּ֙ לַעֲרֹ֣ךְ מִלְחָמָ֔ה בַּמָּק֕וֹם אֲשֶׁר־עָ֥רְכוּ שָׁ֖ם בַּיּ֥וֹם הָרִאשֽׁוֹן׃
  
  23 וַיַּעֲל֣וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיִּבְכּ֣וּ לִפְנֵֽי־יְהוָה֮ עַד־הָעֶרֶב֒ וַיִּשְׁאֲל֤וּ בַֽיהוָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַאוֹסִ֗יף לָגֶ֙שֶׁת֙ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה עִם־בְּנֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן אָחִ֑י וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה עֲל֥וּ אֵלָֽיו׃
  
  24 וַיִּקְרְב֧וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשֵּׁנִֽי׃
  
  25 וַיֵּצֵא֩ בִנְיָמִ֨ן ׀ לִקְרָאתָ֥ם ׀ מִֽן־הַגִּבְעָה֮ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשֵּׁנִי֒ וַיַּשְׁחִיתוּ֩ בִבְנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל ע֗וֹד שְׁמֹנַ֨ת עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ אָ֑רְצָה כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה שֹׁ֥לְפֵי חָֽרֶב׃
  
  26 וַיַּעֲל֣וּ כָל־בְּנֵי֩ יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל וְכָל־הָעָ֜ם וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ בֵֽית־אֵ֗ל וַיִּבְכּוּ֙ וַיֵּ֤שְׁבוּ שָׁם֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּצ֥וּמוּ בַיּוֹם־הַה֖וּא עַד־הָעָ֑רֶב וַֽיַּעֲל֛וּ עֹל֥וֹת וּשְׁלָמִ֖ים לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃
  
  27 וַיִּשְׁאֲל֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּֽיהוָ֑ה וְשָׁ֗ם אֲרוֹן֙ בְּרִ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים בַּיָּמִ֖ים הָהֵֽם׃
  
  28 וּ֠פִינְחָס בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֨ר בֶּֽן־אַהֲרֹ֜ן עֹמֵ֣ד ׀ לְפָנָ֗יו בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵם֮ לֵאמֹר֒ הַאוֹסִ֨ף ע֜וֹד לָצֵ֧את לַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה עִם־בְּנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֥ן אָחִ֖י אִם־אֶחְדָּ֑ל וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ עֲל֔וּ כִּ֥י מָחָ֖ר אֶתְּנֶ֥נּוּ בְיָדֶֽךָ׃
  
  29 וַיָּ֤שֶׂם יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֹֽרְבִ֔ים אֶל־הַגִּבְעָ֖ה סָבִֽיב׃
  
  30 וַיַּעֲל֧וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י וַיַּעַרְכ֥וּ אֶל־הַגִּבְעָ֖ה כְּפַ֥עַם בְּפָֽעַם׃
  
  31 וַיֵּצְא֤וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִן֙ לִקְרַ֣את הָעָ֔ם הָנְתְּק֖וּ מִן־הָעִ֑יר וַיָּחֵ֡לּוּ לְהַכּוֹת֩ מֵהָעָ֨ם חֲלָלִ֜ים כְּפַ֣עַם ׀ בְּפַ֗עַם בַּֽמְסִלּוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אַחַ֜ת עֹלָ֣ה בֵֽית־אֵ֗ל וְאַחַ֤ת גִּבְעָ֙תָה֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה כִּשְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אִ֖ישׁ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
  
  32 וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֔ן נִגָּפִ֥ים הֵ֛ם לְפָנֵ֖ינוּ כְּבָרִאשֹׁנָ֑ה וּבְנֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל אָמְר֗וּ נָנ֙וּסָה֙ וּֽנְתַקְּנֻ֔הוּ מִן־הָעִ֖יר אֶל־הַֽמְסִלּֽוֹת׃
  
  33 וְכֹ֣ל ׀ אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל קָ֚מוּ מִמְּקוֹמ֔וֹ וַיַּעַרְכ֖וּ בְּבַ֣עַל תָּמָ֑ר וְאֹרֵ֧ב יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מֵגִ֥יחַ מִמְּקֹמ֖וֹ מִמַּֽעֲרֵה־גָֽבַע׃
  
  34 וַיָּבֹאוּ֩ מִנֶּ֨גֶד לַגִּבְעָ֜ה עֲשֶׂרֶת֩ אֲלָפִ֨ים אִ֤ישׁ בָּחוּר֙ מִכָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְהַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה כָּבֵ֑דָה וְהֵם֙ לֹ֣א יָדְע֔וּ כִּֽי־נֹגַ֥עַת עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם הָרָעָֽה׃
  
  35 וַיִּגֹּ֨ף יְהוָ֥ה ׀ אֶֽת־בִּנְיָמִן֮ לִפְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַיַּשְׁחִיתוּ֩ בְנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל בְּבִנְיָמִן֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא עֶשְׂרִ֨ים וַחֲמִשָּׁ֥ה אֶ֛לֶף וּמֵאָ֖ה אִ֑ישׁ כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה שֹׁ֥לֵף חָֽרֶב׃
  
  36 וַיִּרְא֥וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֖ן כִּ֣י נִגָּ֑פוּ וַיִּתְּנ֨וּ אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל מָקוֹם֙ לְבִנְיָמִ֔ן כִּ֤י בָֽטְחוּ֙ אֶל־הָ֣אֹרֵ֔ב אֲשֶׁר שָׂ֖מוּ אֶל־הַגִּבְעָֽה׃
  
  37 וְהָאֹרֵ֣ב הֵחִ֔ישׁוּ וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֖וּ אֶל־הַגִּבְעָ֑ה וַיִּמְשֹׁךְ֙ הָאֹרֵ֔ב וַיַּ֥ךְ אֶת־כָּל־הָעִ֖יר לְפִי־חָֽרֶב׃
  
  38 וְהַמּוֹעֵ֗ד הָיָ֛ה לְאִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עִם־הָאֹרֵ֑ב הֶ֕רֶב לְהַעֲלוֹתָ֛ם מַשְׂאַ֥ת הֶעָשָׁ֖ן מִן־הָעִֽיר׃
  
  39 וַיַּהֲפֹ֥ךְ אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וּבִנְיָמִ֡ן הֵחֵל֩ לְהַכּ֨וֹת חֲלָלִ֤ים בְּאִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ כִּשְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים אִ֔ישׁ כִּ֣י אָמְר֔וּ אַךְ֩ נִגּ֨וֹף נִגָּ֥ף הוּא֙ לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ כַּמִּלְחָמָ֖ה הָרִאשֹׁנָֽה׃
  
  40 וְהַמַּשְׂאֵ֗ת הֵחֵ֛לָּה לַעֲל֥וֹת מִן־הָעִ֖יר עַמּ֣וּד עָשָׁ֑ן וַיִּ֤פֶן בִּנְיָמִן֙ אַחֲרָ֔יו וְהִנֵּ֛ה עָלָ֥ה כְלִיל־הָעִ֖יר הַשָּׁמָֽיְמָה׃
  
  41 וְאִ֤ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ הָפַ֔ךְ וַיִּבָּהֵ֖ל אִ֣ישׁ בִּנְיָמִ֑ן כִּ֣י רָאָ֔ה כִּֽי־נָגְעָ֥ה עָלָ֖יו הָרָעָֽה׃
  
  42 וַיִּפְנ֞וּ לִפְנֵ֨י אִ֤ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל־דֶּ֣רֶךְ הַמִּדְבָּ֔ר וְהַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה הִדְבִּיקָ֑תְהוּ וַאֲשֶׁר֙ מֵהֶ֣עָרִ֔ים מַשְׁחִיתִ֥ים אוֹת֖וֹ בְּתוֹכֽוֹ׃
  
  43 כִּתְּר֤וּ אֶת־בִּנְיָמִן֙ הִרְדִיפֻ֔הוּ מְנוּחָ֖ה הִדְרִיכֻ֑הוּ עַ֛ד נֹ֥כַח הַגִּבְעָ֖ה מִמִּזְרַח־שָֽׁמֶשׁ׃
  
  44 וַֽיִּפְּלוּ֙ מִבִּנְיָמִ֔ן שְׁמֹנָֽה־עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֖לֶף אִ֑ישׁ אֶת־כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה אַנְשֵׁי־חָֽיִל׃
  
  45 וַיִּפְנ֞וּ וַיָּנֻ֤סוּ הַמִּדְבָּ֙רָה֙ אֶל־סֶ֣לַע הָֽרִמּ֔וֹן וַיְעֹֽלְלֻ֙הוּ֙ בַּֽמְסִלּ֔וֹת חֲמֵ֥שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֖ים אִ֑ישׁ וַיַּדְבִּ֤יקוּ אַחֲרָיו֙ עַד־גִּדְעֹ֔ם וַיַּכּ֥וּ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ אַלְפַּ֥יִם אִֽישׁ׃

  2 Sa concubine lui fit infidélité, et elle le quitta pour aller dans la maison de son père à Bethléhem de Juda, où elle resta l'espace de quatre mois.
  
  3 Son mari se leva et alla vers elle, pour parler à son coeur et la ramener. Il avait avec lui son serviteur et deux ânes. Elle le fit entrer dans la maison de son père ; et quand le père de la jeune femme le vit, il le reçut avec joie.
  
  4 Son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, le retint trois jours chez lui. Ils mangèrent et burent, et ils y passèrent la nuit.
  
  5 Le quatrième jour, ils se levèrent de bon matin, et le Lévite se disposait à partir. Mais le père de la jeune femme dit à son gendre : Prends un morceau de pain pour fortifier ton coeur ; vous partirez ensuite.
  
  6 Et ils s'assirent, et ils mangèrent et burent eux deux ensemble. Puis le père de la jeune femme dit au mari : Décide-toi donc à passer la nuit, et que ton coeur se réjouisse.
  
  7 Le mari se levait pour s'en aller ; mais, sur les instances de son beau-père, il passa encore la nuit.
  
  8 Le cinquième jour, il se leva de bon matin pour partir. Alors le père de la jeune femme dit : Fortifie ton coeur, je te prie ; et restez jusqu'au déclin du jour. Et ils mangèrent eux deux.
  
  9 Le mari se levait pour s'en aller, avec sa concubine et son serviteur ; mais son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, lui dit : Voici, le jour baisse, il se fait tard, passez donc la nuit ; voici, le jour est sur son déclin, passe ici la nuit, et que ton coeur se réjouisse ; demain vous vous lèverez de bon matin pour vous mettre en route, et tu t'en iras à ta tente.
  
  10 Le mari ne voulut point passer la nuit, il se leva et partit. Il arriva jusque devant Jebus, qui est Jérusalem, avec les deux ânes bâtés et avec sa concubine.
  
  11 Lorsqu'ils furent près de Jebus, le jour avait beaucoup baissé. Le serviteur dit alors à son maître : Allons, dirigeons-nous vers cette ville des Jébusiens, et nous y passerons la nuit.
  
  12 Son maître lui répondit : Nous n'entrerons pas dans une ville d'étrangers, où il n'y a point d'enfants d'Israël, nous irons jusqu'à Guibea.
  
  13 Il dit encore à son serviteur : Allons, approchons-nous de l'un de ces lieux, Guibea ou Rama, et nous y passerons la nuit.
  
  14 Ils continuèrent à marcher, et le soleil se coucha quand ils furent près de Guibea, qui appartient à Benjamin.
  
  15 Ils se dirigèrent de ce côté pour aller passer la nuit à Guibea. Le Lévite entra, et il s'arrêta sur la place de la ville. Il n'y eut personne qui les reçût dans sa maison pour qu'ils y passassent la nuit.
  
  16 Et voici, un vieillard revenait le soir de travailler aux champs ; cet homme était de la montagne d'Éphraïm, il séjournait à Guibea, et les gens du lieu étaient Benjamites.
  
  17 Il leva les yeux, et vit le voyageur sur la place de la ville. Et le vieillard lui dit : Où vas-tu, et d'où viens-tu ?
  
  18 Il lui répondit : Nous allons de Bethléhem de Juda jusqu'à l'extrémité de la montagne d'Éphraïm, d'où je suis. J'étais allé à Bethléhem de Juda, et je me rends à la maison de l'Éternel. Mais il n'y a personne qui me reçoive dans sa demeure.
  
  19 Nous avons cependant de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes ; nous avons aussi du pain et du vin pour moi, pour ta servante, et pour le garçon qui est avec tes serviteurs. Il ne nous manque rien.
  
  20 Le vieillard dit : Que la paix soit avec toi ! Je me charge de tous tes besoins, tu ne passeras pas la nuit sur la place.
  
  21 Il les fit entrer dans sa maison, et il donna du fourrage aux ânes. Les voyageurs se lavèrent les pieds ; puis ils mangèrent et burent.
  
  22 Pendant qu'ils étaient à se réjouir, voici, les hommes de la ville, gens pervers, entourèrent la maison, frappèrent à la porte, et dirent au vieillard, maître de la maison : Fais sortir l'homme qui est entré chez toi, pour que nous le connaissions.
  
  23 Le maître de la maison, se présentant à eux, leur dit : Non, mes frères, ne faites pas le mal, je vous prie ; puisque cet homme est entré dans ma maison, ne commettez pas cette infamie.
  
  24 Voici, j'ai une fille vierge, et cet homme a une concubine ; je vous les amènerai dehors ; vous les déshonorerez, et vous leur ferez ce qu'il vous plaira. Mais ne commettez pas sur cet homme une action aussi infâme.
  
  25 Ces gens ne voulurent point l'écouter. Alors l'homme prit sa concubine, et la leur amena dehors. Ils la connurent, et ils abusèrent d'elle toute la nuit jusqu'au matin ; puis ils la renvoyèrent au lever de l'aurore.
  
  26 Vers le matin, cette femme alla tomber à l'entrée de la maison de l'homme chez qui était son mari, et elle resta là jusqu'au jour.
  
  27 Et le matin, son mari se leva, ouvrit la porte de la maison, et sortit pour continuer son chemin. Mais voici, la femme, sa concubine, était étendue à l'entrée de la maison, les mains sur le seuil.
  
  28 Il lui dit : Lève-toi, et allons-nous-en. Elle ne répondit pas. Alors le mari la mit sur un âne, et partit pour aller dans sa demeure.
  
  29 Arrivé chez lui, il prit un couteau, saisit sa concubine, et la coupa membre par membre en douze morceaux, qu'il envoya dans tout le territoire d'Israël.
  
  30 Tous ceux qui virent cela dirent : Jamais rien de pareil n'est arrivé et ne s'est vu depuis que les enfants d'Israël sont montés du pays d'Égypte jusqu'à ce jour ; prenez la chose à coeur, consultez-vous, et parlez !
  
  Juges 20
  
  1 Tous les enfants d'Israël sortirent, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beer Schéba et au pays de Galaad, et l'assemblée se réunit comme un seul homme devant l'Éternel, à Mitspa.
  
  2 Les chefs de tout le peuple, toutes les tribus d'Israël, se présentèrent dans l'assemblée du peuple de Dieu : quatre cent mille hommes de pied, tirant l'épée.
  
  3 Et les fils de Benjamin apprirent que les enfants d'Israël étaient montés à Mitspa. Les enfants d'Israël dirent : Parlez, comment ce crime a-t-il été commis ?
  
  4 Alors le Lévite, le mari de la femme qui avait été tuée, prit la parole, et dit : J'étais arrivé, avec ma concubine, à Guibea de Benjamin, pour y passer la nuit.
  
  5 Les habitants de Guibea se sont soulevés contre moi, et ont entouré pendant la nuit la maison où j'étais. Ils avaient l'intention de me tuer, et ils ont fait violence à ma concubine, et elle est morte.
  
  6 J'ai saisi ma concubine, et je l'ai coupée en morceaux, que j'ai envoyés dans tout le territoire de l'héritage d'Israël ; car ils ont commis un crime et une infamie en Israël.
  
  7 Vous voici tous, enfants d'Israël ; consultez-vous, et prenez ici une décision !
  
  8 Tout le peuple se leva comme un seul homme, en disant : Nul de nous n'ira dans sa tente, et personne ne retournera dans sa maison.
  
  9 Voici maintenant ce que nous ferons à Guibea : Nous marcherons contre elle d'après le sort.
  
  10 Nous prendrons dans toutes les tribus d'Israël dix hommes sur cent, cent sur mille, et mille sur dix mille ; ils iront chercher des vivres pour le peuple, afin qu'à leur retour on traite Guibea de Benjamin selon toute l'infamie qu'elle a commise en Israël.
  
  11 Ainsi tous les hommes d'Israël s'assemblèrent contre la ville, unis comme un seul homme.
  
  12 Les tribus d'Israël envoyèrent des hommes vers toutes les familles de Benjamin, pour dire : Qu'est-ce que ce crime qui s'est commis parmi vous ?
  
  13 Livrez maintenant les gens pervers qui sont à Guibea, afin que nous les fassions mourir et que nous ôtions le mal du milieu d'Israël. Mais les Benjamites ne voulurent point écouter la voix de leurs frères, les enfants d'Israël.
  
  14 Les Benjamites sortirent de leurs villes, et s'assemblèrent à Guibea, pour combattre les enfants d'Israël.
  
  15 Le dénombrement que l'on fit en ce jour des Benjamites sortis des villes fut de vingt-six mille hommes, tirant l'épée, sans compter les habitants de Guibea formant sept cents hommes d'élite.
  
  16 Parmi tout ce peuple, il y avait sept cents hommes d'élite qui ne se servaient pas de la main droite ; tous ceux-là pouvaient, en lançant une pierre avec la fronde, viser à un cheveu sans le manquer.
  
  17 On fit aussi le dénombrement des hommes d'Israël, non compris ceux de Benjamin, et l'on en trouva quatre cent mille tirant l'épée, tous gens de guerre.
  
  18 Et les enfants d'Israël se levèrent, montèrent à Béthel, et consultèrent Dieu, en disant : Qui de nous montera le premier pour combattre les fils de Benjamin ? l'Éternel répondit : Juda montera le premier.
  
  19 Dès le matin, les enfants d'Israël se mirent en marche, et ils campèrent près de Guibea.
  
  20 Et les hommes d'Israël s'avancèrent pour combattre ceux de Benjamin, et ils se rangèrent en bataille contre eux devant Guibea.
  
  21 Les fils de Benjamin sortirent de Guibea, et ils étendirent sur le sol ce jour-là vingt-deux mille hommes d'Israël.
  
  22 Le peuple, les hommes d'Israël reprirent courage, et ils se rangèrent de nouveau en bataille dans le lieu où ils s'étaient placés le premier jour.
  
  23 Et les enfants d'Israël montèrent, et ils pleurèrent devant l'Éternel jusqu'au soir ; ils consultèrent l'Éternel, en disant : Dois-je m'avancer encore pour combattre les fils de Benjamin, mon frère ? L'Éternel répondit : Montez contre lui.
  
  24 Les enfants d'Israël s'avancèrent contre les fils de Benjamin, le second jour.
  
  25 Et ce même jour, les Benjamites sortirent de Guibea à leur rencontre, et ils étendirent encore sur le sol dix-huit mille hommes des enfants d'Israël, tous tirant l'épée.
  
  26 Tous les enfants d'Israël et tout le peuple montèrent et vinrent à Béthel ; ils pleurèrent et restèrent là devant l'Éternel, ils jeûnèrent en ce jour jusqu'au soir, et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices d'actions de grâces devant l'Éternel.
  
  27 Et les enfants d'Israël consultèrent l'Éternel, -c'était là que se trouvait alors l'arche de l'alliance de Dieu,
  
  28 et c'était Phinées, fils d'Éléazar, fils d'Aaron, qui se tenait à cette époque en présence de Dieu, -et ils dirent : Dois-je marcher encore pour combattre les fils de Benjamin, mon frère, ou dois-je m'en abstenir ? L'Éternel répondit : Montez, car demain je les livrerai entre vos mains.
  
  29 Alors Israël plaça une embuscade autour de Guibea.
  
  30 Les enfants d'Israël montèrent contre les fils de Benjamin, le troisième jour, et ils se rangèrent en bataille devant Guibea, comme les autres fois.
  
  31 Et les fils de Benjamin sortirent à la rencontre du peuple, et ils se laissèrent attirer loin de la ville. Ils commencèrent à frapper à mort parmi le peuple comme les autres fois, sur les routes dont l'une monte à Béthel et l'autre à Guibea par la campagne, et ils tuèrent environ trente hommes d'Israël.
  
  32 Les fils de Benjamin disaient : Les voilà battus devant nous comme auparavant ! Mais les enfants d'Israël disaient : Fuyons, et attirons-les loin de la ville dans les chemins.
  
  33 Tous les hommes d'Israël quittèrent leur position, et se rangèrent à Baal Thamar ; et l'embuscade d'Israël s'élança du lieu où elle était, de Maaré Guibea.
  
  34 Dix mille hommes choisis sur tout Israël arrivèrent devant Guibea. Le combat fut rude, et les Benjamites ne se doutaient pas du désastre qu'ils allaient éprouver.
  
  35 L'Éternel battit Benjamin devant Israël, et les enfants d'Israël tuèrent ce jour-là vingt-cinq mille et cent hommes de Benjamin, tous tirant l'épée.
  
  36 Les fils de Benjamin regardaient comme battus les hommes d'Israël, qui cédaient du terrain à Benjamin et se reposaient sur l'embuscade qu'ils avaient placée contre Guibea.
  
  37 Les gens en embuscade se jetèrent promptement sur Guibea, ils se portèrent en avant et frappèrent toute la ville du tranchant de l'épée.
  
  38 Suivant un signal convenu avec les hommes d'Israël, ceux de l'embuscade devaient faire monter de la ville une épaisse fumée.
  
  39 Les hommes d'Israël firent alors volte-face dans la bataille. Les Benjamites leur avaient tué déjà environ trente hommes, et ils disaient : Certainement les voilà battus devant nous comme dans le premier combat !
  
  40 Cependant une épaisse colonne de fumée commençait à s'élever de la ville. Les Benjamites regardèrent derrière eux ; et voici, de la ville entière les flammes montaient vers le ciel.
  
  41 Les hommes d'Israël avaient fait volte-face ; et ceux de Benjamin furent épouvantés, en voyant le désastre qui allait les atteindre.
  
  42 Ils tournèrent le dos devant les hommes d'Israël, et s'enfuirent par le chemin du désert. Mais les assaillants s'attachèrent à leurs pas, et ils détruisirent pendant le trajet ceux qui étaient sortis des villes.
  
  43 Ils enveloppèrent Benjamin, le poursuivirent, l'écrasèrent dès qu'il voulait se reposer, jusqu'en face de Guibea du côté du soleil levant.
  
  44 Il tomba dix-huit mille hommes de Benjamin, tous vaillants.
  
  45 Parmi ceux qui tournèrent le dos pour s'enfuir vers le désert au rocher de Rimmon, les hommes d'Israël en firent périr cinq mille sur les routes ; ils les poursuivirent jusqu'à Guideom, et ils en tuèrent deux mille.
  
  46 Le nombre total des Benjamites qui périrent ce jour-là fut de vingt-cinq mille hommes tirant l'épée, tous vaillants.
  
  47 Six cents hommes, qui avaient tourné le dos et qui s'étaient enfuis vers le désert au rocher de Rimmon, demeurèrent là pendant quatre mois.
  
  48 Les hommes d'Israël revinrent vers les fils de Benjamin, et ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, depuis les hommes des villes jusqu'au bétail, et tout ce que l'on trouva. Ils mirent aussi le feu à toutes les villes qui existaient.

  5 Après cela, tu arriveras à Guibea Élohim, où se trouve une garnison de Philistins. En entrant dans la ville, tu rencontreras une troupe de prophètes descendant du haut lieu, précédés du luth, du tambourin, de la flûte et de la harpe, et prophétisant eux-mêmes.
  
  10 Lorsqu'ils arrivèrent à Guibea, voici, une troupe de prophètes vint à sa rencontre. L'esprit de Dieu le saisit, et il prophétisa au milieu d'eux.

  4 His father-in-law, the young lady's father, retained him; and he stayed with him three days: so they ate and drink, and lodged there.
  
  5 It happened on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the young lady's father said to his son-in-law, "Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way."
  
  6 So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together: and the young lady's father said to the man, "Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry."
  
  7 The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.
  
  8 He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady's father said, "Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines"; and they both ate.
  
  9 When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady's father, said to him, "Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night: behold, the day grows to an end, lodge here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home."
  
  10 But the man wouldn't stay that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of donkeys saddled; his concubine also was with him.
  
  11 When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, "Please come and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it."
  
  12 His master said to him, "We won't turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah."
  
  13 He said to his servant, "Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah."
  
  14 So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near to Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.
  
  15 They turned aside there, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man who took them into his house to lodge.
  
  16 Behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at evening: now the man was of the hill country of Ephraim, and he lived in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.
  
  17 He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, "Where are you going? Where did you come from?"
  
  18 He said to him, "We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to the house of Yahweh; and there is no man who takes me into his house.
  
  19 Yet there is both straw and provender for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your handmaid, and for the young man who is with your servants: there is no want of anything."
  
  20 The old man said, "Peace be to you; howsoever let all your wants lie on me; only don't lodge in the street."
  
  21 So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder; and they washed their feet, and ate and drink.
  
  22 As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, "Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may have sex with him!"
  
  23 The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, "No, my brothers, please don't act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don't do this folly.
  
  24 Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don't do any such folly."
  
  25 But the men wouldn't listen to him: so the man laid hold of his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning: and when the day began to dawn, they let her go.
  
  26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, until it was light.
  
  27 Her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold.
  
  28 He said to her, "Get up, and let us be going!" but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.
  
  29 When he had come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.
  
  30 It was so, that all who saw it said, "There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak."

  1 Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was assembled as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, to Yahweh at Mizpah.
  
  2 The chiefs of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen who drew sword.
  
  3 (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) The children of Israel said, "Tell us, how did this wickedness happen?"
  
  4 The Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered, "I came into Gibeah that belongs to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.
  
  5 The men of Gibeah rose against me, and surrounded the house by night. They thought to have slain me, and they forced my concubine, and she is dead.
  
  6 I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel; for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.
  
  7 Behold, you children of Israel, all of you, give here your advice and counsel."
  
  8 All the people arose as one man, saying, "None of us will go to his tent, neither will any of us turn to his house.
  
  9 But now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah: we will go up against it by lot;
  
  10 and we will take ten men of one hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and one hundred of one thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to get food for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have worked in Israel."
  
  11 So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.
  
  12 The tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, "What wickedness is this that is happen among you?
  
  13 Now therefore deliver up the men, the base fellows, who are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel." But Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brothers the children of Israel.
  
  14 The children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities to Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.
  
  15 The children of Benjamin were numbered on that day out of the cities twenty-six thousand men who drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who were numbered seven hundred chosen men.
  
  16 Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men left-handed; everyone could sling stones at a hair-breadth, and not miss.
  
  17 The men of Israel, besides Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men who drew sword: all these were men of war.
  
  18 The children of Israel arose, and went up to Bethel, and asked counsel of God; and they said, "Who shall go up for us first to battle against the children of Benjamin?" Yahweh said, "Judah first."
  
  19 The children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.
  
  20 The men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel set the battle in array against them at Gibeah.
  
  21 The children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites on that day twenty-two thousand men.
  
  22 The people, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves, and set the battle again in array in the place where they set themselves in array the first day.
  
  23 The children of Israel went up and wept before Yahweh until evening; and they asked of Yahweh, saying, "Shall I again draw near to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother?" Yahweh said, "Go up against him."
  
  24 The children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.
  
  25 Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.
  
  26 Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came to Bethel, and wept, and sat there before Yahweh, and fasted that day until evening; and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before Yahweh.
  
  27 The children of Israel asked of Yahweh (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,
  
  28 and Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, "Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease?" Yahweh said, "Go up; for tomorrow I will deliver him into your hand."
  
  29 Israel set ambushes all around Gibeah.
  
  30 The children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and set themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.
  
  31 The children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to strike and kill of the people, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goes up to Bethel, and the other to Gibeah, in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
  
  32 The children of Benjamin said, "They are struck down before us, as at the first." But the children of Israel said, "Let us flee, and draw them away from the city to the highways."
  
  33 All the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and set themselves in array at Baal Tamar: and the ambushers of Israel broke forth out of their place, even out of Maareh Geba.
  
  34 There came over against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was severe; but they didn't know that evil was close on them.
  
  35 Yahweh struck Benjamin before Israel; and the children of Israel destroyed of Benjamin that day twenty-five thousand one hundred men: all these drew the sword.
  
  36 So the children of Benjamin saw that they were struck; for the men of Israel gave place to Benjamin, because they trusted the ambushers whom they had set against Gibeah.
  
  37 The ambushers hurried, and rushed on Gibeah; and the ambushers drew themselves along, and struck all the city with the edge of the sword.
  
  38 Now the appointed sign between the men of Israel and the ambushers was that they should make a great cloud of smoke rise up out of the city.
  
  39 The men of Israel turned in the battle, and Benjamin began to strike and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons; for they said, "Surely they are struck down before us, as in the first battle."
  
  40 But when the cloud began to arise up out of the city in a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them; and behold, the whole of the city went up in smoke to the sky.
  
  41 The men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were dismayed; for they saw that evil had come on them.
  
  42 Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel to the way of the wilderness; but the battle followed hard after them; and those who came out of the cities destroyed them in its midst.
  
  43 They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them, and trod them down at their resting place, as far as over against Gibeah toward the sunrise.
  
  44 There fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valor.
  
  45 They turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men, and followed hard after them to Gidom, and struck of them two thousand men.
  
  46 So that all who fell that day of Benjamin were twenty-five thousand men who drew the sword; all these were men of valor.
  
  47 But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and stayed in the rock of Rimmon four months.
  
  48 The men of Israel turned again on the children of Benjamin, and struck them with the edge of the sword, both the entire city, and the livestock, and all that they found: moreover all the cities which they found they set on fire.
