  36 Balak n'avait aucune raison de se plaindre, bien qu'il eut préféré que Balaam vienne plus tôt. Ce dernier annonça à Balak qu'il voulait disposer d'une certaine liberté dans ses actes. Balaam parlait en donnant l'impression d'être vexé ; il était en fait autant désireux de plaire à Balak qu'il prétendait l'être envers Dieu.
  Remarquez à quel point nous devons faire chaque jour cette Prière : « notre Père qui es aux cieux, ne nous induis pas en tentation ». Soyons jaloux de voir à quel point les hommes, loin de la connaissance divine, peuvent bénéficier à leur tour, de la grâce de Dieu, toute proche !

  14 Ce passage cite une loi, relative aux bornes qui délimitent les propriétés en Canaan. L'Éternel voulait en effet que chacun connaisse parfaitement son bien ; cette ordonnance était destinée à éviter tout malentendu dans la gestion des terres. Il s'agit aussi, sans aucun doute, d'un précepte moral, destiné à nous rendre satisfaits de ce que nous possédons : la justice était ainsi respectée, vis-à-vis du voisinage, comme dans les affaires.

  7 La frontière commune, entre Manassé et Éphraïm était relativement étendue. Malgré le fait que chaque tribu possédait son propre héritage, il y avait beaucoup de communications entre les deux parties et de bonnes relations fraternelles les animaient : elles étaient liées et faisaient partie de la nation d'Israël. Elles souffraient cependant de la présence des Cananéens, qui vivaient encore avec eux en tant que serviteurs, malgré l'interdiction que Dieu leur avait faite à ce sujet.

  11 Les frontières de chaque tribu d'Israël étaient bien distinctes en Canaan, conformément à l'héritage qui leur était dévolu. Toutes polémiques et querelles éventuelles se trouvaient ainsi contrecarrées par la Sagesse divine : seul l'Éternel était en effet capable d'allouer équitablement pour chaque tribu, les collines et les vallées, les terres à céréales et les pâturages, les ruisseaux et les rivières, ainsi que les différentes villes.
  Qu'en est-il de la part réservée aux serviteurs de Dieu ? N'est-elle pas composée de bénédictions, comme de souffrances et d'épreuves ? Le Seigneur s'occupe de tout ce qui nous concerne : laissons-Le accomplir, tout ce qu'Il juge bon pour nous ! Connaissons-nous la prospérité et la paix ? Tout cela vient du ciel. Sachons rester humbles quand nous contemplons les dons que nous recevons : nous sommes loin de les mériter !
  N'oublions pas notre Seigneur, qui fait toutes choses bien, soyons toujours prêts à accepter Ses commandements !

  10 Dans l'attribution des terres réservées à chaque tribu d'Israël, nous pouvons voir l'accomplissement des promesses divines, reçues par Jacob. Les Hébreux choisirent en effet les lots qui leur étaient assignés, conformément aux prophéties reçues par le patriarche. Ce texte nous permet ainsi de voir toute la véracité de la Parole de Dieu : cela ne peut qu'encourager notre foi et nous prouver que si nous sommes soumis à Sa volonté, nous pourrons alors distinguer quelles sont Ses voies, parmi tous les pièges rencontrés ici-bas.

  9 The border extended from the top of the mountain to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of Mount Ephron; and the border extended to Baalah (the same is Kiriath Jearim);
  
  10 and the border turned about from Baalah westward to Mount Seir, and passed along to the side of Mount Jearim on the north (the same is Chesalon), and went down to Beth Shemesh, and passed along by Timnah;
  
  11 and the border went out to the side of Ekron northward; and the border extended to Shikkeron, and passed along to Mount Baalah, and went out at Jabneel; and the goings out of the border were at the sea.
  
  12 The west border was to the shore of the great sea. This is the border of the children of Judah according to their families.
  
  21 The farthest cities of the tribe of the children of Judah toward the border of Edom in the South were Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur,
  
  47 Ashdod, its towns and its villages; Gaza, its towns and its villages; to the brook of Egypt, and the great sea with its coastline.

  2 It went out from Bethel to Luz, and passed along to the border of the Archites to Ataroth;

  9 The border went down to the brook of Kanah, southward of the brook. These cities belonged to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh was on the north side of the brook, and ended at the sea.

  14 The border extended, and turned around on the west quarter southward, from the mountain that lies before Beth Horon southward; and ended at Kiriath Baal (the same is Kiriath Jearim), a city of the children of Judah. This was the west quarter.
  
  15 The south quarter was from the farthest part of Kiriath Jearim. The border went out westward, and went out to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah.
  
  16 The border went down to the farthest part of the mountain that lies before the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is in the valley of Rephaim northward. It went down to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of the Jebusite southward, and went down to En Rogel.
  
  19 The border passed along to the side of Beth Hoglah northward; and the border ended at the north bay of the Salt Sea, at the south end of the Jordan. This was the south border.

  10 The third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to their families. The border of their inheritance was to Sarid.
