  1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
  
  2 "Avenge the children of Israel for the Midianites. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people."
  
  3 Moses spoke to the people, saying, "Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian, to execute Yahweh's vengeance on Midian.
  
  4 Of every tribe one thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, you shall send to the war."
  
  5 So there were delivered, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
  
  6 Moses sent them, one thousand of every tribe, to the war, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.
  
  7 They warred against Midian, as Yahweh commanded Moses; and they killed every male.
  
  8 They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain: Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they killed with the sword.
  
  9 The children of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their little ones; and all their livestock, and all their flocks, and all their goods, they took for a prey.
  
  10 All their cities in the places in which they lived, and all their encampments, they burnt with fire.
  
  11 They took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of man and of animal.
  
  12 They brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan at Jericho.
  
  13 Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them outside of the camp.
  
  14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war.
  
  15 Moses said to them, "Have you saved all the women alive?
  
  16 Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against Yahweh in the matter of Peor, and so the plague was among the congregation of Yahweh.
  
  17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him.
  
  18 But all the girls, who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.
  
  19 "Encamp outside of the camp seven days: whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives.
  
  20 As to every garment, and all that is made of skin, and all work of goats' hair, and all things made of wood, you shall purify yourselves."
  
  21 Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who went to the battle, "This is the statute of the law which Yahweh has commanded Moses:
  
  22 however the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
  
  23 everything that may withstand the fire, you shall make to go through the fire, and it shall be clean; nevertheless it shall be purified with the water for impurity: and all that doesn't withstand the fire you shall make to go through the water.
  
  24 You shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean; and afterward you shall come into the camp."
  
  25 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
  
  26 "Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of animal, you, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers' households of the congregation;
  
  27 and divide the prey into two parts: between the men skilled in war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation.
  
  28 Levy a tribute to Yahweh of the men of war who went out to battle: one soul of five hundred; of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks.
  
  29 Take it of their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest, for Yahweh's wave offering.
  
  30 Of the children of Israel's half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks, of all the livestock, and give them to the Levites, who perform the duty of the tabernacle of Yahweh."
  
  31 Moses and Eleazar the priest did as Yahweh commanded Moses.
  
  32 Now the prey, over and above the booty which the men of war took, was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,
  
  33 and seventy-two thousand head of cattle,
  
  34 and sixty-one thousand donkeys,
  
  35 and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of the women who had not known man by lying with him.
  
  36 The half, which was the portion of those who went out to war, was in number three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep:
  
  37 and Yahweh's tribute of the sheep was six hundred seventy-five.
  
  38 The cattle were thirty-six thousand; of which Yahweh's tribute was seventy-two.
  
  39 The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred; of which Yahweh's tribute was sixty-one.
  
  40 The persons were sixteen thousand; of whom Yahweh's tribute was thirty-two persons.
  
  41 Moses gave the tribute, which was Yahweh's wave offering, to Eleazar the priest, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
  
  42 Of the children of Israel's half, which Moses divided off from the men who warred
  
  43 (now the congregation's half was three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
  
  44 and thirty-six thousand head of cattle,
  
  45 and thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,
  
  46 and sixteen thousand persons),
  
  47 even of the children of Israel's half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animal, and gave them to the Levites, who performed the duty of the tabernacle of Yahweh; as Yahweh commanded Moses.
  
  48 The officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near to Moses;
  
  49 and they said to Moses, "Your servants have taken the sum of the men of war who are under our command, and there lacks not one man of us.
  
  50 We have brought Yahweh's offering, what every man has gotten, of jewels of gold, armlets, and bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for our souls before Yahweh."
  
  51 Moses and Eleazar the priest took their gold, even all worked jewels.
  
  52 All the gold of the wave offering that they offered up to Yahweh, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels.
  
  53 (The men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.)
  
  54 Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the Tent of Meeting, for a memorial for the children of Israel before Yahweh.
  
  Psaumes 75
  
  1 <> We give thanks to you, God. We give thanks, for your Name is near. Men tell about your wondrous works.
  
  2 When I choose the appointed time, I will judge blamelessly.
  
  3 The earth and all its inhabitants quake. I firmly hold its pillars. Selah.
  
  4 I said to the arrogant, "Don't boast!" I said to the wicked, "Don't lift up the horn.
  
  5 Don't lift up your horn on high. Don't speak with a stiff neck."
  
  6 For neither from the east, nor from the west, nor yet from the south, comes exaltation.
  
  7 But God is the judge. He puts down one, and lifts up another.
  
  8 For in the hand of Yahweh there is a cup, full of foaming wine mixed with spices. He pours it out. Indeed the wicked of the earth drink and drink it to its very dregs.
  
  9 But I will declare this forever: I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
  
  10 I will cut off all the horns of the wicked, but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.
  
  Psaumes 76
  
  1 <> In Judah, God is known. His name is great in Israel.
  
  2 His tabernacle is also in Salem; His dwelling place in Zion.
  
  3 There he broke the flaming arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the weapons of war. Selah.
  
  4 Glorious are you, and excellent, more than mountains of game.
  
  5 Valiant men lie plundered, they have slept their last sleep. None of the men of war can lift their hands.
  
  6 At your rebuke, God of Jacob, both chariot and horse are cast into a deep sleep.
  
  7 You, even you, are to be feared. Who can stand in your sight when you are angry?
  
  8 You pronounced judgment from heaven. The earth feared, and was silent,
  
  9 when God arose to judgment, to save all the afflicted ones of the earth. Selah.
  
  10 Surely the wrath of man praises you. The survivors of your wrath are restrained.
  
  11 Make vows to Yahweh your God, and fulfill them! Let all of his neighbors bring presents to him who is to be feared.
  
  12 He will cut off the spirit of princes. He is feared by the kings of the earth.
  
  Esaïe 23
  
  1 The burden of Tyre. Howl, you ships of Tarshish! For it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in. From the land of Kittim it is revealed to them.
  
  2 Be still, you inhabitants of the coast, you whom the merchants of Sidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished.
  
  3 On great waters, the seed of the Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, was her revenue. She was the market of nations.
  
  4 Be ashamed, Sidon; for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying, "I have not travailed, nor brought forth, neither have I nourished young men, nor brought up virgins."
  
  5 When the report comes to Egypt, they will be in anguish at the report of Tyre.
  
  6 Pass over to Tarshish! Wail, you inhabitants of the coast!
  
  7 Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days, whose feet carried her far away to travel?
  
  8 Who has planned this against Tyre, the giver of crowns, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honorable of the earth?
  
  9 Yahweh of Armies has planned it, to stain the pride of all glory, to bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth.
  
  10 Pass through your land like the Nile, daughter of Tarshish. There is no restraint any more.
  
  11 He has stretched out his hand over the sea. He has shaken the kingdoms. Yahweh has ordered the destruction of Canaan's strongholds.
  
  12 He said, "You shall rejoice no more, you oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon. Arise, pass over to Kittim. Even there you will have no rest."
  
  13 Behold, the land of the Chaldeans. This people was not. The Assyrians founded it for those who dwell in the wilderness. They set up their towers. They overthrew its palaces. They made it a ruin.
  
  14 Howl, you ships of Tarshish, for your stronghold is laid waste!
  
  15 It will come to pass in that day that Tyre will be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king. After the end of seventy years it will be to Tyre like in the song of the prostitute.
  
  16 Take a harp; go about the city, you prostitute that has been forgotten. Make sweet melody. Sing many songs, that you may be remembered.
  
  17 It will happen after the end of seventy years that Yahweh will visit Tyre, and she shall return to her wages, and will play the prostitute with all the kingdoms of the world on the surface of the earth.
  
  18 Her merchandise and her wages will be holiness to Yahweh. It will not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise will be for those who dwell before Yahweh, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing.

  La guerre avec Madian. (Nombres 31:1-6)
  Balaam est tué. (Nombres 31:7-12)
  Tous ceux qui ont péché sont tués. (Nombres 31:13-38)

  Offrandes. (Nombres 31:48-54)
  Tous ceux qui, par ambition, cupidité ou rancune, osent se venger à titre personnel et sans l'aval divin, finissent par connaître un jour ou l'autre la désolation, même s'ils agissent au nom d'une nation. Mais par contre, s'il plait à Dieu, d'envoyer quelqu'un pour venger Sa cause, au lieu de déclencher un tremblement de terre, la peste ou la famine, une telle démarche est tout à fait juste correcte.
  Les Israélites de cette époque avaient les pleins pouvoirs en ce sens, alors qu'il en est tout autrement aujourd'hui. Cette guerre se déroulait en fait sous la Direction divine et Israël pouvait ainsi vaincre miraculeusement ses ennemis. À moins qu'il ne fût prouvé que les Cananéens, animés par leur méchanceté, ne méritaient pas la mort, le fait de maudire Dieu ne pouvait que les livrer à leurs ennemis.
  L'homme se vante parfois du mal engendré par le péché, ce que déteste Dieu. Cette pensée peut expliquer les terribles épreuves que subissent les nations, qui sont d’ailleurs, à la mesure de leurs péchés.
  
  7 Les Israélites tuèrent les rois de Madian, ainsi que Balaam. Le rejet de la Providence divine par ce dernier, se retourna contre lui et la vengeance de l'Éternel fut impitoyable. Si Balaam avait été vraiment convaincu de ce qu'il disait, quand il annonçait la prospérité d'Israël, il n'aurait pas ainsi sympathisé avec les ennemis des Hébreux. Les ruses et la méchanceté des Madianites étaient en phase avec les idées de Balaam : il était donc juste que tous périssent, Os 4:5.
  Les enfants d'Israël capturèrent les femmes et les enfants de Madian. Ils brûlèrent leurs villes et leurs fortifications, puis rejoignirent finalement leur camp.
  
  13 L'épée de la guerre devrait épargner les femmes et les enfants ; celle de la Justice, quant à elle, devrait ne faire aucune distinction des crimes commis. Cette guerre n'était que l'exécution de la sentence divine à l'encontre d'une nation coupable, dont les femmes étaient les principales instigatrices des crimes commis. Les jeunes filles furent épargnées et furent déportées chez les Israélites, afin qu'elles ne soient pas tentées de tomber dans l'idolâtrie.
  Tout ce texte montre bien la nature odieuse du péché et la faute qui consiste à amener son prochain vers la tentation ; cela nous enseigne qu'il nous faut éviter toute occasion de pratiquer le mal et de ne tomber dans aucune faille qui pourrait mener vers la corruption. Les femmes et les enfants Madianites ne furent pas capturés à cause de leurs actions commises contre Israël, ils devaient en fait servir d'esclaves : c'était la coutume à cette époque pour les captifs.
  Quand les jugements divins se traduisent par des famines où des fléaux à l'égard des nations, il est fréquent de voir hélas, les enfants souffrir de ces calamités. Dans le cas que mentionne notre texte, la punition des parents est retombée sur leurs enfants ; à ces derniers, qui sont morts sans avoir réellement commis de fautes à l'encontre d'Israël, Dieu réserve, dans Sa Miséricorde, un bonheur éternel.
  
  19 Les Israélites devaient, selon la loi, se purifier en demeurant sept jours hors du camp, malgré le fait qu'ils n'avaient commis aucune faute morale en allant faire la guerre que l'Éternel, dans Sa Justice, avait commandée. Dieu voulait en effet ôter de leur esprit tout mauvais sentiment qui pouvait subsister après les combats sanglants. Le butin qui venait des Madianites était maintenant en possession des enfants d'Israël, il était donc convenable que toutes ces choses soient purifiées.
  
  25 Quelles que soient la nature et la quantité de nos biens, nous devons rendre la part qui revient à Dieu. Le texte nous indique qu'une portion représentant le cinq centième du butin devait être prélevée parmi les combattants, alors que pour le peuple, il était demandé le cinquantième.
  Si nous ne pouvons, par manque d'opportunité, honorer Dieu par divers services, nous devons alors compenser cet état de fait en donnant une partie notre argent.
  
  48 Le succès militaire des Israélites était vraiment remarquable : un si petit nombre de combattants écrasant une telle multitude, et en plus, sans aucune victime chez les Hébreux ! Les commandants de l'armée d'Israël apportèrent à Moïse l'or du butin, pour l'offrir à l'Éternel. Au lieu de réclamer une récompense pour leur service, ils demandèrent pardon pour le mal qu'ils avaient pu occasionner lors de ce combat ; ils furent également reconnaissants de ce que leur vie fut épargnée, malgré le risque encouru !
  
  Psaumes 75
  
  1
  Le psalmiste est résolu à exécuter le jugement. (Psaumes 75:1-5)
  Il réprimande le méchant, et conclut dans la résolution de louer Dieu. (Psaumes 75:6-10)
  Nous prions souvent pour obtenir miséricorde ; mais une fois l'exaucement acquis, Lui adresserons-nous vraiment notre reconnaissance ? Dieu révèle qu'Il se tait quand nous Lui faisons certaines requêtes. La confiance que nous faisons à Dieu en public doit être faite avec honnêteté. Il en est de même pour celle que nous adressons à Christ et à Son gouvernement.
  Le péché de l'homme menace de détruire toute la création ; mais Christ a sauvé le monde d'une ruine amère. Celui qui a été fait pour nous Sagesse, nous invite à Le suivre dans Ses voies. Aux orgueilleux, aux pécheurs prétentieux, Il dit de ne pas se vanter de leur puissance, de ne pas persister dans leur outrage.
  Toutes les espérances et les joies futures de la race humaine ne peuvent venir que du Fils de Dieu.
  
  6 Personne ne pourra promouvoir les hommes si la Cause Première ne l'a décidé. Cela ne vient ni de l'Est, ni de l'Ouest, ni du Sud. Le Nord n'est également pas mentionné ; le mot qui signifie « Nord » veut dire en fait « endroit secret » ; et tout vient du conseil secret de Dieu. De Dieu seul viennent aussi les échecs. Il y a toutes sortes de miséricordes et de grâces dans la coupe d'affliction, quand tout est placé entre les mains de Dieu ; de même, il y a une multitude de fléaux quand tout est remis entre les mains des impies. Le peuple de Dieu peut mettre en commun toutes ses calamités mais la lie du vin est réservée pour le méchant.
  L'exaltation du Fils de David sera l'objet de louanges éternelles. Laissons donc les pécheurs entre les mains du Roi des rois et que les croyants se réjouissent en Lui et Lui obéissent !
  
  Psaumes 76
  
  1
  Le psalmiste souligne la puissance de Dieu. (Psaumes 76:1-6)
  Tous doivent Le craindre et Lui faire confiance. (Psaumes 76:7-12)
  Heureux sont ceux qui sont remplis de la connaissance de Dieu ! Les gens heureux ont le cœur rempli de cette connaissance ! C'est à la fois une gloire et une joie de posséder les ordonnances divines. Quand les ennemis de l'église peuvent se vanter de leurs actes, il apparaît en fait que Dieu est au dessus de tout cela. Observez à quel point les réprimandes divines sont puissantes !
  Que les chrétiens puissent garder à l'esprit ces pensées et puissent goûter aux promesses faites par le Rédempteur.
  
  7 Le peuple de Dieu est la douceur de la terre, la quiétude même ; néanmoins il endure parfois la souffrance. Le Dieu de droiture semble garder longuement le silence alors que tôt ou tard Il exercera son jugement devant tous. Nous vivons dans un monde de colère et de provocation ; nous en ressentons souvent les effets et nous sommes dans la crainte.
  Ce qui ne sera pas à Sa gloire finira par être révélé devant tous. Il peut venir à bout de la colère humaine de même qu'Il a maîtrisé la mer déchainée ; Il ne tardera pas dans Sa venue.
  Soyons soumis à Dieu. Nos prières, nos louanges et en particulier notre cœur, sont les présents que nous devrions apporter au Seigneur. Son nom est glorieux et Il est l'objet de notre crainte. Il abattra l'orgueil des princes ; Il le fera sans difficulté, comme nous pouvons séparer une fleur de sa tige, ou une grappe du pied de vigne ; il en est ainsi de Ses paroles. Il peut décourager le plus prétentieux : alors que nous n'avons aucun grief contre Dieu, il est de notre sagesse, comme de notre devoir, de nous soumettre à Lui. Recherchons Sa faveur et remettons-Lui tous nos soucis.
  
  Esaïe 23
  
  1
  L'oracle sur Tyr. (Esaïe 23:1-14)
  Son rétablissement. (Esaïe 23:15-18)
  Tyr était une place commerciale, renommée parmi les nations. Elle se faisait remarquer par ses plaisirs et ses distractions « douteux » ; elle n'était pas du tout disposée à prendre en compte les avertissements que l'Éternel lui avait adressés, par l'intermédiaire de Ses prophètes. Ses négociants étaient de véritables princes, et vivaient comme tels. Cette ville étant détruite et dévastée, ces marchands allaient rapidement l'abandonner.
  L'Éternel lui recommande de se lever et de fuir, pour rester en sûreté ; en fait, ceux qui se trouvaient mal à l'aise en cet endroit, devaient l'être pareillement ailleurs ; quand les Jugements divins poursuivent les pécheurs, ils les rattrapent toujours !
  D'où provenaient tous ces ennuis ? Le Tout-Puissant avait résolu de détruire la ville : Il voulait convaincre ces hommes de leur orgueil et de l'issue fatale des mauvaises réputations de ce monde.
  Que cette dévastation de la ville de Tyr puisse mettre en garde les « lieux fétiches » ainsi que leurs résidents, contre toute vanité ; car quiconque s'élève, sera abaissé, Luc 8:14*. Dieu, Celui qui dispose de toute la Puissance, exécutera cette sentence annoncée ; en fait, les Chaldéens allaient être les instruments divins.

  15 La désolation de Tyr ne devait pas durer éternellement : l'Éternel, dans Sa Grâce, allait de nouveau la visiter. Mais une fois la liberté retrouvée, cette ville tentera par de nombreux moyens, de soumettre les hommes à la tentation.
  L'amour des richesses de ce monde est une idolâtrie spirituelle ; il en est de même pour la convoitise !
  Ce texte devrait inciter ceux qui disposent d'une certaine fortune, à la mettre à disposition du Seigneur. Quand nous demeurons avec ce Dernier, dans nos différentes pérégrinations mondaines, quand nous faisons tout notre possible pour la diffusion de l'évangile, nos différentes affaires témoignent alors de la Sainteté divine, si nous portons toutefois notre regard à Sa gloire.
  Les chrétiens devraient vaquer à leurs affaires comme de véritables serviteurs de Dieu, et mettre leurs richesses à Sa disposition !
