- Josué 10
  
  1 Now it happened when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;
  
  2 that they were very afraid, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.
  
  3 Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,
  
  4 "Come up to me, and help me, and let us strike Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel."
  
  5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their armies, and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it.
  
  6 The men of Gibeon sent to Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, "Don't abandon your servants! Come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill country have gathered together against us."
  
  7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.
  
  8 Yahweh said to Joshua, "Don't fear them, for I have delivered them into your hands. Not a man of them will stand before you."
  
  9 Joshua therefore came on them suddenly. He went up from Gilgal all night.
  
  10 Yahweh confused them before Israel, and he killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth Horon, and struck them to Azekah and to Makkedah.
  
  11 It happened, as they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth Horon, that Yahweh cast down great stones from the sky on them to Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than who the children of Israel killed with the sword.
  
  12 Then Joshua spoke to Yahweh in the day when Yahweh delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still on Gibeon! You, moon, stop in the valley of Aijalon!"
  
  13 The sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Isn't this written in the book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the midst of the sky, and didn't hurry to go down about a whole day.
  
  14 There was no day like that before it or after it, that Yahweh listened to the voice of a man; for Yahweh fought for Israel.
  
  15 Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp to Gilgal.
  
  16 These five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.
  
  17 Joshua was told, saying, "The five kings are found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah."
  
  18 Joshua said, "Roll large stones to the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them;
  
  19 but don't stay. Pursue your enemies, and them from the rear. Don't allow them to enter into their cities; for Yahweh your God has delivered them into your hand."
  
  20 It happened, when Joshua and the children of Israel had finished killing them with a very great slaughter until they were consumed, and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities,
  
  21 that all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace. None moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
  
  22 Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out of the cave to me."
  
  23 They did so, and brought those five kings out of the cave to him: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
  
  24 It happened, when they brought those kings out to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who went with him, "Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings." They came near, and put their feet on their necks.
  
  25 Joshua said to them, "Don't be afraid, nor be dismayed. Be strong and courageous, for Yahweh will do this to all your enemies against whom you fight."
  
  26 Afterward Joshua struck them, put them to death, and hanged them on five trees. They were hanging on the trees until the evening.
  
  27 It happened at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave in which they had hidden themselves, and laid great stones on the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.
  
  28 Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with its king. He utterly destroyed them and all the souls who were in it. He left none remaining. He did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
  
  29 Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah.
  
  30 Yahweh delivered it also, with its king, into the hand of Israel. He struck it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls who were in it. He left none remaining in it. He did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
  
  31 Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it.
  
  32 Yahweh delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel. He took it on the second day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with all the souls who were in it, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
  
  33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
  
  34 Joshua passed from Lachish, and all Israel with him, to Eglon; and they encamped against it fought against it.
  
  35 They took it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword. He utterly destroyed all the souls who were in it that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
  
  36 Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, to Hebron; and they fought against it.
  
  37 They took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with its king and all its cities, and all the souls who were in it. He left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls who were in it.
  
  38 Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fought against it.
  
  39 He took it, with its king and all its cities. They struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls who were in it. He left none remaining. As he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to its king; as he had done also to Libnah, and to its king.
  
  40 So Joshua struck all the land, the hill country, and the South, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Yahweh, the God of Israel, commanded.
  
  41 Joshua struck them from Kadesh Barnea even to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even to Gibeon.
  
  42 Joshua took all these kings and their land at one time, because Yahweh, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.
  
  43 Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp to Gilgal.

  1 <> I cry with my voice to Yahweh. With my voice, I ask Yahweh for mercy.
  
  2 I pour out my complaint before him. I tell him my troubles.
  
  3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, you knew my path. In the way in which I walk, they have hidden a snare for me.
  
  4 Look on my right, and see; for there is no one who is concerned for me. Refuge has fled from me. No one cares for my soul.
  
  5 I cried to you, Yahweh. I said, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living."
  
  6 Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need. deliver me from my persecutors, For they are stronger than me.
  
  7 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name. The righteous will surround me, for you will be good to me.
  
  Psaumes 143
  
  1 <> Hear my prayer, Yahweh. Listen to my petitions. In your faithfulness and righteousness, relieve me.
  
  2 Don't enter into judgment with your servant, for in your sight no man living is righteous.
  
  3 For the enemy pursues my soul. He has struck my life down to the ground. He has made me live in dark places, as those who have been long dead.
  
  4 Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me. My heart within me is desolate.
  
  5 I remember the days of old. I meditate on all your doings. I contemplate the work of your hands.
  
  6 I spread forth my hands to you. My soul thirsts for you, like a parched land. Selah.
  
  7 Hurry to answer me, Yahweh. My spirit fails. Don't hide your face from me, so that I don't become like those who go down into the pit.
  
  8 Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.
  
  9 Deliver me, Yahweh, from my enemies. I flee to you to hide me.
  
  10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.
  
  11 Revive me, Yahweh, for your name's sake. In your righteousness, bring my soul out of trouble.
  
  12 In your loving kindness, cut off my enemies, and destroy all those who afflict my soul, For I am your servant.

  1 "If you will return, Israel," says Yahweh, "if you will return to me, and if you will put away your abominations out of my sight; then you shall not be removed;
  
  2 and you shall swear, 'As Yahweh lives,' in truth, in justice, and in righteousness. The nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory."
  
  3 For thus says Yahweh to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, "Break up your fallow ground, and don't sow among thorns.
  
  4 Circumcise yourselves to Yahweh, and take away the foreskins of your heart, you men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
  
  5 Declare in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, 'Blow the trumpet in the land!' Cry aloud and say, 'Assemble yourselves! Let us go into the fortified cities!'
  
  6 Set up a standard toward Zion. Flee for safety! Don't wait; for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction."
  
  7 A lion is gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer of nations; he is on his way, he is gone forth from his place, to make your land desolate, that your cities be laid waste, without inhabitant.
  
  8 For this clothe yourself with sackcloth, lament and wail; for the fierce anger of Yahweh hasn't turned back from us.
  
  9 "It shall happen at that day," says Yahweh, "that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder."
  
  10 Then I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh! Surely you have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, 'You shall have peace;' whereas the sword reaches to the heart."
  
  11 At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, "A hot wind from the bare heights in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to winnow, nor to cleanse;
  
  12 a full wind from these shall come for me. Now I will also utter judgments against them."
  
  13 Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as the whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us! For we are ruined.
  
  14 Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you?
  
  15 For a voice declares from Dan, and publishes evil from the hills of Ephraim:
  
  16 "Tell the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, 'Watchers come from a far country, and raise their voice against the cities of Judah.
  
  17 As keepers of a field, they are against her all around, because she has been rebellious against me,'" says Yahweh.
  
  18 "Your way and your doings have brought these things to you. This is your wickedness; for it is bitter, for it reaches to your heart."
  
  19 My anguish, my anguish! I am pained at my very heart; my heart is disquieted in me; I can't hold my peace; because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.
  
  20 Destruction on destruction is cried; for the whole land is laid waste: suddenly are my tents destroyed, and my curtains in a moment.
  
  21 How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?
  
  22 "For my people are foolish, they don't know me. They are foolish children, and they have no understanding. They are skillful in doing evil, but to do good they have no knowledge."
  
  23 I saw the earth, and, behold, it was waste and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.
  
  24 I saw the mountains, and behold, they trembled, and all the hills moved back and forth.
  
  25 I saw, and behold, there was no man, and all the birds of the sky had fled.
  
  26 I saw, and behold, the fruitful field was a wilderness, and all its cities were broken down at the presence of Yahweh, before his fierce anger.
  
  27 For thus says Yahweh, "The whole land shall be a desolation; yet will I not make a full end.
  
  28 For this the earth will mourn, and the heavens above be black; because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and I have not repented, neither will I turn back from it."
  
  29 Every city flees for the noise of the horsemen and archers; they go into the thickets, and climb up on the rocks: every city is forsaken, and not a man dwells therein.
  
  30 You, when you are made desolate, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself with scarlet, though you deck you with ornaments of gold, though you enlarge your eyes with paint, in vain do you make yourself beautiful; your lovers despise you, they seek your life.
  
  31 For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, the anguish as of her who brings forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, who gasps for breath, who spreads her hands, saying, "Woe is me now! For my soul faints before the murderers."

  1
  Cinq rois veulent faire la guerre à Gabaon. (Josué 10:1-6)
  Josué secourt Gabaon, le soleil et la lune s'arrêtent. (Josué 10:7-14)
  Les rois sont pris, leur armée est décimée, tous sont mis à mort. (Josué 10:15-27)
  Sept autres rois sont aussi battus et tués. (Josué 10:28-43)
  Quand des pécheurs, comme ces Gabaonites, abandonnent leur service pour Satan et tout lien d'amitié avec les hommes iniques, afin de faire la paix avec Dieu et rejoindre Israël, ils ne doivent pas s'étonner si le monde les hait et si leurs anciens amis s'opposent à eux. Par de tels agissements, Satan tente de décourager ceux qui sont presque persuadés de devenir chrétiens, mais qui hésitent encore à s'approcher de la croix. Tout cela devrait nous inciter vivement à rechercher la protection, l'aide et la délivrance divines !
  
  7 Les plus méchants et en même temps les plus faibles, parmi les pécheurs qui viennent se confier au Seigneur, ont davantage besoin d'être protégés des attaques du monde, plus que ceux qui Le servent calmement et fidèlement, depuis longtemps. Il est de notre devoir de défendre les affligés, qui, comme les Gabaonites, ont rallié les rangs du Seigneur et la cause de l'évangile. Josué ne voulait pas abandonner ceux qui étaient ses tout nouveaux serviteurs. Quelle pourra être alors la défense de ce « Josué céleste », en la faveur de ceux qui se confient en Lui ! Nous pouvons désirer certaines bénédictions, dans notre confiance en Dieu, mais ce n'est pas pour autant que nous obtiendrons du ciel le succès aux yeux du monde. Les promesses divines ne peuvent tarir ni être vaines, elles sont données pour encourager nos efforts. Remarquez la grande foi de Josué ainsi que la miraculeuse réponse de l'Éternel, avec l'arrêt de la course du soleil, dans le ciel : le jour dédié à la victoire d'Israël a put être allongé ! Josué profita de cette occasion, pour tirer tous les avantages de cette leçon reçue de l'Esprit de Dieu. Il n'était pas nécessaire que le patriarche fasse de grands discours ni de cérémonies spéciales, au sujet de ce miracle, selon la façon de l'astronomie moderne ! Le soleil apparut aux Israélites, sur le territoire des Gabaonites, et la lune, sur la vallée d'Ajalon : il semblerait que les deux astres aient arrêté leur course une journée entière.
  Y-a-t-il quelque chose qui soit trop difficile à réaliser, pour le Seigneur ? Nous pouvons voir au travers des âges, les différentes réponses divines données aux enfants de Dieu, face aux dizaines de milliers de difficultés qu'ils purent rencontrer, le tout conformément à la Parole et malgré les moqueries faites par les différents objecteurs.
  Une proclamation a donc été faite aux différentes nations, voisines du peuple d'Israël : « Contemplez les œuvres de l'Éternel. Qui peut être, comme Lui, aussi près de Son peuple » ?
  
  15 Personne, en Canaan, n'osait tenir des propos hostiles aux enfants d'Israël. Cela révèle la sécurité qui régnait parmi le peuple. Ces rois reçurent la rétribution qu'ils méritaient, en tant que rebelles à Israël. Les refuges des menteurs ne peuvent leur éviter les jugements divins. Dieu punit en effet ces rois maudits à la mesure de leur iniquité.
  Par ce rendu public de justice, à l'égard de ces dignitaires Cananéens, l'Éternel voulait inculquer à Son peuple la crainte qu'il devait ressentir, après Lui avoir désobéi, comme le firent ces différentes nations, ennemies d'Israël.
  Nous avons ici une image des différentes victoires de Christ, sur les œuvres des ténèbres, victoires associées à celles des croyants, en Lui. Dans nos conflits spirituels, nous ne devons pas nous contenter d'importantes victoires sur l'ennemi ; nous devons poursuivre et chasser ce dernier, de façon à ce qu'il ne reste aucune trace, des péchés qu'il aurait pu laisser dans notre cœur. Si nous agissons ainsi, le Seigneur nous comblera de Sa Lumière, tant que durera le combat.
  
  28 Josué fit rapidement la conquête de toutes ces villes. Que de travail nous pouvons accomplir en peu de temps, si nous savons nous organiser et saisir toutes les opportunités ! L'Éternel manifeste ici toute Sa réprobation contre l'idolâtrie et les abominations dont étaient coupables les Cananéens ; cela nous indique également la grande provocation de ces païens envers Dieu, et la terrible destruction qu'ils subirent ensuite. C'est également une image de l'anéantissement de tous les ennemis du Seigneur Jésus, qui après leur avoir offert les richesses de Sa Grâce, leur fera subir le poids éternel de Sa colère. L'Éternel combattit pour Israël : ce dernier n'aurait pu en effet obtenir la victoire, sans Celui qui a dirigé la bataille. Quand Dieu combat pour nous, nous sommes alors conquérants ; s'Il combat en notre faveur, qui peut tenir contre nous ?
  
  Psaumes 142
  
  1
  Le réconfort de David, par la prière.
  - Il ne peut y avoir de pire situation dangereuse pour la foi que de ne rencontrer aucun réconfort divin dans la prière. Nous sommes capables de nous apitoyer sur nos propres problèmes, sans que cela serve à quoi que ce soit ; par contre, en les soumettant à Dieu, nous remettons toutes choses entre les mains de Celui qui est le seul à pouvoir nous aider efficacement. Ne cherchons pas à nous décharger de nos problèmes sur les autres alors que l'on n'a même pas commencé à les placer devant Dieu.
  Quand nous sommes submergés par la détresse et le découragement, quand nous sommes entourés de tous côtés par des pièges, alors que nous marchons dans les voies du Seigneur, nous savons que nous pouvons compter sur Lui, car Il connaît la route que nous empruntons. Ceux qui, pour leur sécurité, s'appuient sur le Seigneur, trouvent en Lui toute suffisance, Il est le refuge : tout autre protection ne sera que mensonge, sans valeur.
  Dans la situation de ce psaume, David a prié Dieu avec ferveur. Nous pouvons, d'ailleurs, le prendre en exemple, pour notre vie spirituelle ; les âmes des croyants sont souvent assaillies par les doutes et les craintes. Il est alors du devoir de ceux-ci et de leur intérêt d'implorer Dieu, pour qu'Il leur redonne leur liberté, pour qu'ils observent Ses commandements. Il en a été ainsi pour la délivrance de David, entouré de persécuteurs. Il a imploré le Rédempteur, sur son trône de gloire, et a fait de Lui la Tête de toutes choses. Lorsque le pécheur convaincu est secouru, il est amené à louer Dieu au sein de l'assemblée ; tous les croyants, à la longue, seront délivrés du péché et de la mort, ils loueront leur Sauveur, à jamais !
  
  Psaumes 143
  
  1
  David, en pleine détresse, se plaint de ses ennemis. (Psaumes 143:1-6)
  Il prie pour avoir réconfort et délivrance, pour être guidé. (Psaumes 143:7-12)
  Nous n'avons pas le droit de nous plaindre de notre sort, sinon devant le Dieu juste et droit, afin que la Parole, pleine des promesses qu'Il nous a librement données et qui a suscité l'espoir chez David lors de ses prières face à l'épreuve, suscite également le même espoir en nous.
  Le psalmiste, avant de demander d'être délivré de l'épreuve, prie pour le pardon de son péché, étant convaincu de ne dépendre que de la seule Miséricorde divine. Il se lamente devant l'épreuve qu'il rencontre. Il regarde vers le passé et se remémore les bienfaits réalisés par Dieu, pour Son peuple et pour lui, en particulier. Il contemple toutes les œuvres accomplies par Dieu.
  Plus nous considérons la puissance de Dieu, moins nous serons impressionnés par la présence et la force des hommes.
  David tourne ses regards avec empressement vers Dieu. C'est le meilleur parti que nous puissions prendre, quand nos esprits sont abattus. Le croyant n'oubliera pas que malgré tout, il est pécheur. La méditation et la prière nous redresseront lors de la détresse ; notre âme s'efforcera alors de se tourner vers le Seigneur, la fraîche rosée qui arrose le sol, tout comme l'enfant qui, assoiffé de consolation, tend ses mains vers sa mère indulgente.
  
  7 David prie pour que Dieu soit indulgent à son égard et lui montre Sa volonté. Il avoue que si Dieu s'éloigne de lui, son cas sera désespéré. Mais la nuit de détresse et de découragement se terminera par un matin de consolation et de louange. Le psalmiste prie afin d'être éclairé par la connaissance de la volonté divine ; c'est d'ailleurs, le premier rôle de l'Esprit. Un homme pieux ne demandera pas la direction du chemin le plus agréable, mais celle qui mène plutôt à la droiture. Seigneur, montre-moi non seulement Ta volonté, mais aussi, comment la mettre en pratique. Ceux qui possèdent le Seigneur en tant que Dieu, bénéficient de l'Esprit, en tant que guide personnel ; ils sont conduits par l'Esprit. Ils prient, de façon à accomplir la volonté divine. Recherchons vraiment la destruction de nos péchés, nos pires ennemis, afin de devenir de fidèles serviteurs.
  
  Jérémie 4
  
  1
  Exhortations et promesses. (Jérémie 4:1-2)
  Juda exhorté à la repentance. (Jérémie 4:3-4)

  La ruine imminente de Juda. (Jérémie 4:19-31)
  Les deux premiers versets de ce texte devraient en fait, faire partie du chapitre précédent.
  Le péché doit être banni du cœur, lors de la repentance, sinon il ne peut être oublié par Dieu !
  
  3 Un cœur non repentant ressemble à une terre non labourée, ne nécessitant qu'une remise en état de production ; en fait, si ce sol nous appartient, il n'est en fait que jachère : il est envahi par les épines et les herbes, état classique d'un cœur corrompu.
  Supplions le Seigneur, afin qu'Il crée en nous un cœur propre, et un esprit bien disposé. « Si un homme ne naît de nouveau, il ne peut voir le royaume de Dieu », Jean 3:3*.

  5 Les féroces nations, environnant Juda, voulaient le conduire à la désolation. Le prophète était affligé, à la vue du peuple, vivant dans une sécurité illusoire, entretenue par les faux prophètes. L'approche de l'ennemi est ici décrite. Jérusalem cherchait néanmoins à réformer cet état apparent, mais il était nécessaire au préalable, que le cœur de ses habitants soit « lavé », pour être propre au repentir, dans une foi authentique, loin de la convoitise et de la souillure du péché.
  Quand les moindres calamités ne parviennent pas à décourager les pécheurs et ne réussissent pas à reformer les nations, le ciel leur envoie des sentences plus sévères. La Parole de l'Éternel déclare que la misère s'approche, en particulier contre les « faux prophètes » de l'évangile ; quand celle-ci les atteindra, on verra alors clairement que le « fruit » de leur méchanceté est vraiment amer, et ne peut conduire qu'à une issue fatale.
  
  19 Dans ce texte, le prophète n'éprouva aucune satisfaction à annoncer les sentences de la colère divine : dans une vision, toute la terre est montrée, en pleine confusion. Comparé avec la situation précédente du pays d'Israël, tout était dans le chaos ; malgré tout, cette ruine de la nation juive n'allait pas être l'issue fatale.
  Si notre bien-être ici-bas nous est parfois ôté par le Seigneur, ce, n'est pas à titre définitif. Bien qu'Il puisse très sévèrement corriger les Siens, Il ne les rejettera jamais définitivement.
  Ni les ornements, ni les attraits du pays d'Israël n'étaient en mesure d'apaiser le courroux divin. Aucun des privilèges acquis par cette nation, aucun traité ni convention, n'allaient empêcher sa destruction finale.
  Quel misérable état rencontre-t-on chez ceux qui, tels des enfants inconséquents, ne se font aucun souci pour leur âme ! Quel que soit le niveau de notre ignorance à ce sujet, puisse le Seigneur nous montrer les voies de la piété ! De même que l'iniquité dénonce inéluctablement le pécheur, ainsi la correction divine, mène tôt ou tard, après repentance, à la sérénité spirituelle !
