- Exode 20
  
  1 Et Dieu prononça toutes ces paroles, disant : Haut-lieu
  
  2 Je suis l'Éternel, ton Dieu, qui t'ai fait sortir du pays d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude. Egypte (1)
  
  3 Tu n'auras point d'autres dieux devant ma face.
  
  4 Tu ne te feras point d'image taillée, ni aucune ressemblance de ce qui est dans les cieux en haut, et de ce qui est sur la terre en bas, et de ce qui est dans les eaux au-dessous de la terre.
  
  5 Tu ne t'inclineras point devant elles, et tu ne les serviras point ; car moi, l'Éternel, ton Dieu, je suis un Dieu jaloux, qui visite l'iniquité des pères sur les fils, sur la troisième et sur la quatrième génération de ceux qui me haïssent,
  
  6 et qui use de bonté envers des milliers de ceux qui m'aiment et qui gardent mes commandements.
  
  7 Tu ne prendras point le nom de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, en vain ; car l'Éternel ne tiendra point pour innocent celui qui aura pris son nom en vain.
  
  8 Souviens-toi du jour du sabbat, pour le sanctifier.
  
  9 six jours tu travailleras, et tu feras toute ton oeuvre ;
  
  10 mais le septième jour est le sabbat consacré à l'Éternel, ton Dieu : tu ne feras aucune oeuvre, ni toi, ni ton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ta bête, ni ton étranger qui est dans tes portes.
  
  11 Car en six jours l'Éternel a fait les cieux, et la terre, la mer, et tout ce qui est en eux, et il s'est reposé le septième jour ; c'est pourquoi l'Éternel a béni le jour du sabbat, et l'a sanctifié.
  
  12 Honore ton père et ta mère, afin que tes jours soient prolongés sur la terre que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne.
  
  13 Tu ne tueras point.
  
  14 Tu ne commettras point adultère.
  
  15 Tu ne déroberas point.
  
  16 Tu ne diras point de faux témoignage contre ton prochain.
  
  17 Tu ne convoiteras point la maison de ton prochain ; tu ne convoiteras point la femme de ton prochain, ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son boeuf, ni son âne, ni rien qui soit à ton prochain.
  
  18 Et tout le peuple aperçut les tonnerres, et les flammes, et le son de la trompette, et la montagne fumante ; et le peuple vit cela, et ils tremblèrent et se tinrent loin, et dirent à Moïse :
  
  19 Toi, parle avec nous, et nous écouterons ; mais que Dieu ne parle point avec nous, de peur que nous ne mourions.
  
  20 Et Moïse dit au peuple : Ne craignez pas ; car c'est afin de vous éprouver que Dieu est venu, et afin que sa crainte soit devant vos yeux, pour que vous ne péchiez point.
  
  21 Et le peuple se tint loin ; et Moïse s'approcha de l'obscurité profonde où Dieu était.
  
  22 Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse : Tu diras ainsi aux fils d'Israël : Vous avez vu que j'ai parlé avec vous des cieux. Assyrie Et Babylonie
  
  23 Vous ne ferez point de dieux d'argent à côté de moi, et vous ne vous ferez pas des dieux d'or.
  
  24 Tu me feras un autel de terre, et tu sacrifieras dessus tes holocaustes et tes sacrifices de prospérités, ton menu et ton gros bétail. En tout lieu où je mettrai la mémoire de mon nom, je viendrai à toi, et je te bénirai. Temple (salomon.) Haut-lieu Sanctuaire
  
  25 Et si tu me fais un autel de pierres, tu ne le bâtiras point de pierres taillées ; car si tu lèves ton ciseau dessus, tu le profaneras.
  
  26 Et tu ne monteras point à mon autel par des degrés, afin que ta nudité n'y soit pas découverte. Temple (salomon.) Sanctuaire
  
  Job 38
  
  1 Et l'Éternel répondit à Job du milieu du tourbillon, et dit :
  
  2 Qui est celui-ci qui obscurcit le conseil par des discours sans connaissance ?
  
  3 Ceins tes reins comme un homme, et je t'interrogerai et tu m'instruiras !
  
  4 Où étais-tu quand j'ai fondé la terre ? Déclare-le-moi, si tu as de l'intelligence.
  
  5 Qui lui a établi sa mesure, -si tu le sais ? Ou qui a étendu le cordeau sur elle ?
  
  6 Sur quoi ses bases sont-elles assises, ou qui a placé sa pierre angulaire,
  
  7 Quand les étoiles du matin chantaient ensemble, et que tous les fils de Dieu éclataient de joie ?
  
  8 Et qui a renfermé la mer dans des portes, quand elle rompit les bornes et sortit de la matrice,
  
  9 Quand je fis de la nuée son vêtement, et de l'obscurité ses langes ;
  
  10 Quand je lui découpai ses limites et lui mis des barres et des portes,
  
  11 Et que je dis : Tu viendras jusqu'ici et tu n'iras pas plus loin, et ici s'arrêtera l'orgueil de tes flots ?
  
  12 As-tu, de ta vie, commandé au matin ? As-tu montré à l'aube du jour sa place,
  
  13 qu'elle saisisse les bords de la terre, et que les méchants en soient secoués ?
  
  14 Elle se change comme l'argile d'un sceau, et toutes choses se présentent parées comme d'un vêtement ;
  
  15 Et leur lumière est ôtée aux méchants, et le bras levé et cassé.
  
  16 Es-tu allé aux sources de la mer, et t'es-tu promené dans les profondeurs de l'abîme ?
  
  17 Les portes de la mort se sont-elles découvertes à toi ? Et as-tu vu les portes de l'ombre de la mort ?
  
  18 Ton regard a-t-il pénétré jusque dans les vastes espaces de la terre ? Dis-le, si tu connais tout cela.
  
  19 Où est le chemin vers le séjour de la lumière ? et les ténèbres, où est leur place ?
  
  20 Pour que tu les prennes à leur limite, et que tu connaisses les sentiers de leur maison ?
  
  21 Tu le sais, car tu étais né alors, et le nombre de tes jours est grand !
  
  22 Es-tu allé aux trésors de la neige, et as-tu vu les trésors de la grêle,
  
  23 Que j'ai mis en réserve pour le temps de la détresse, pour le jour du combat et de la guerre ?
  
  24 Par quel chemin se distribue la lumière, et le vent d'orient se répand-il sur la terre ?
  
  25 Qui a découpé des canaux aux torrents de pluie, et un chemin à l'éclair des tonnerres,
  
  26 Pour faire pleuvoir sur une terre où il n'y a personne, sur le désert où il n'y a pas d'hommes ;
  
  27 Pour rassasier les lieux désolés et déserts, pour faire germer les pousses de l'herbe ?
  
  28 La pluie a-t-elle un père ? ou qui engendre les gouttes de la rosée ?
  
  29 Du sein de qui sort la glace ? et le frimas des cieux, qui l'enfante ?
  
  30 Devenues pierre, les eaux se cachent, et la surface de l'abîme se prend.
  
  31 Peux-tu serrer les liens des Pléiades, ou détacher les cordes d'Orion ?
  
  32 Fais-tu sortir les signes du zodiaque en leurs saisons, et mènes-tu la grande Ourse avec ses filles ?
  
  33 Connais-tu les lois des cieux, ou établis-tu leur empire sur la terre ?
  
  34 Peux-tu élever ta voix vers les nuages, en sorte que des torrents d'eau te couvrent ?
  
  35 As-tu lancé la foudre, en sorte qu'elle soit allée et t'ait dit : Me voici ?
  
  36 Qui a mis la sagesse dans les reins, ou qui donna l'intelligence à l'esprit ?
  
  37 Qui a compté les nuages dans sa sagesse ? et qui verse les outres des cieux,
  
  38 la poussière coule comme du métal en fusion et que les mottes se soudent entre elles ?
  
  39 (39 : 1) Est-ce toi qui chasses la proie pour la lionne, et qui rassasies l'appétit des lionceaux,
  
  40 (39 : 2) Quand ils sont couchés dans leurs tanières et se tiennent aux aguets dans leur fourré ?
  
  41 (39 : 3) Qui prépare au corbeau sa pâture quand ses petits crient à Dieu et qu'ils errent sans nourriture ?
  
  Luc 23
  
  1 Et se levant tous ensemble, ils le menèrent à Pilate.
  
  2 Et ils se mirent à l'accuser, disant : Nous avons trouvé cet homme pervertissant notre nation et défendant de donner le tribut à César, se disant lui-même être le Christ, un roi.
  
  3 Et Pilate l'interrogea, disant : Toi, tu es le roi des Juifs ? Et répondant, il lui dit :
  
  4 Tu le dis. Et Pilate dit aux principaux sacrificateurs et aux foules : Je ne trouve aucun crime en cet homme.
  
  5 Mais ils insistaient, disant : Il soulève le peuple, enseignant par toute la Judée, ayant commencé depuis la Galilée jusqu'ici. Galilée Judée
  
  6 Et Pilate, ayant entendu parler de la Galilée, demanda si l'homme était Galiléen.
  
  7 ayant appris qu'il était de la juridiction d'Hérode, il le renvoya à Hérode qui, en ces jours-là, était lui-même aussi à Jérusalem. Jérusalem
  
  8 Et Hérode, voyant Jésus, se réjouit fort ; car il y avait longtemps qu'il désirait de le voir, parce qu'il avait entendu dire plusieurs choses de lui ; et il espérait voir quelque miracle opéré par lui.
  
  9 Et il l'interrogea longuement ; mais il ne lui répondit rien.
  
  10 Et les principaux sacrificateurs et les scribes se tinrent là, l'accusant avec véhémence.
  
  11 Et Hérode, avec ses troupes, l'ayant traité avec mépris et s'étant moqué de lui, le revêtit d'un vêtement éclatant et le renvoya à Pilate.
  
  12 Et Pilate et Hérode devinrent amis entre eux ce même jour ; car auparavant ils étaient en inimitié l'un avec l'autre.
  
  13 Et Pilate, ayant assemblé les principaux sacrificateurs, et les chefs, et le peuple,
  
  14 leur dit : Vous m'avez amené cet homme comme détournant le peuple, et voici, l'ayant examiné devant vous, moi je n'ai trouvé aucun crime dans cet homme quant aux choses dont vous l'accusez,
  
  15 ni Hérode non plus, car je vous ai renvoyés à lui ; et voici, rien n'a été fait par lui qui soit digne de mort.
  
  16 L'ayant donc châtié, je le relâcherai.
  
  17 Or il était obligé de leur relâcher quelqu'un à la fête.
  
  18 Et toute la multitude s'écria ensemble, disant : Ote celui-ci, et relâche-nous Barabbas
  
  19 (qui avait été jeté en prison pour une sédition qui avait eu lieu dans la ville, et pour meurtre).
  
  20 Pilate donc s'adressa de nouveau à eux, désirant relâcher Jésus.
  
  21 Mais ils s'écriaient, disant : Crucifie, crucifie-le !
  
  22 Et il leur dit pour la troisième fois : Mais quel mal celui-ci a-t-il fait ? Je n'ai rien trouvé en lui qui soit digne de mort ; l'ayant donc châtié, je le relâcherai.
  
  23 Mais ils insistaient à grands cris, demandant qu'il fût crucifié. Et leurs cris et ceux des principaux sacrificateurs eurent le dessus.
  
  24 Et Pilate prononça que ce qu'ils demandaient fût fait.
  
  25 Et il relâcha celui qui, pour sédition et pour meurtre, avait été jeté en prison, lequel ils demandaient ; et il livra Jésus à leur volonté.
  
  26 Et comme ils l'emmenaient, ils prirent un certain Simon, Cyrénéen, qui venait des champs, et le chargèrent de la croix, pour la porter après Jésus. Cyrène
  
  27 Et une grande multitude du peuple et de femmes qui se frappaient la poitrine et le pleuraient, le suivait.
  
  28 Mais Jésus, se tournant vers elles, dit : Filles de Jérusalem, ne pleurez pas sur moi ; mais pleurez sur vous-mêmes et sur vos enfants ; Jérusalem
  
  29 car voici, des jours viennent dans lesquels on dira : Bienheureuses les stériles, et les ventres qui n'ont pas enfanté, et les mamelles qui n'ont pas nourri.
  
  30 Alors ils se mettront à dire aux montagnes : Tombez sur nous ; et aux coteaux : Couvrez-vous ;
  
  31 car s'ils font ces choses au bois vert, que sera-t-il fait au bois sec ?
  
  32 Et deux autres aussi, qui étaient des malfaiteurs, furent menés avec lui, pour être mis à mort.
  
  33 Et quand ils furent venus au lieu appelé Crâne, ils le crucifièrent là, et les malfaiteurs, l'un à la droite, l'autre à la gauche. Crâne (lieu Du) Golgotha
  
  34 Et Jésus dit : Père, pardonne-leur, car ils ne savent ce qu'ils font. Et ayant fait le partage de ses vêtements, ils tirèrent au sort.
  
  35 Et le peuple se tenait là, regardant ; et les gouverneurs aussi se raillaient de lui avec eux, disant : Il a sauvé les autres ; qu'il se sauve lui-même, si lui est le Christ, l'élu de Dieu.
  
  36 Et les soldats aussi se moquaient de lui, s'approchant, et lui présentant du vinaigre,
  
  37 et disant : Si toi, tu es le roi des Juifs, sauve-toi toi-même.
  
  38 Et il y avait aussi au-dessus de lui un écriteau en lettres grecques, romaines, et hébraïques : Celui-ci est le roi des Juifs.
  
  39 Et l'un des malfaiteurs qui étaient pendus l'injuriait, disant : N'es-tu pas le Christ, toi ? Sauve-toi toi-même, et nous aussi.
  
  40 Mais l'autre, répondant, le reprit, disant : Et tu ne crains pas Dieu, toi, car tu es sous le même jugement ?
  
  41 Et pour nous, nous y sommes justement ; car nous recevons ce que méritent les choses que nous avons commises : mais celui-ci n'a rien fait qui ne se dût faire.
  
  42 Et il disait à Jésus : Souviens-toi de moi, Seigneur, quand tu viendras dans ton royaume.
  
  43 Et Jésus lui dit : En vérité, je te dis : Aujourd'hui tu seras avec moi dans le paradis.
  
  44 Or il était environ la sixième heure ; et il y eut des ténèbres sur tout le pays jusqu'à la neuvième heure ;
  
  45 et le soleil fut obscurci, et le voile du temple se déchira par le milieu.
  
  46 Et Jésus, criant à haute voix, dit : Père ! entre tes mains je remets mon esprit. Et ayant dit cela, il expira.
  
  47 Et le centurion, voyant ce qui était arrivé, glorifia Dieu, disant : En vérité, cet homme était juste.
  
  48 Et toutes les foules qui s'étaient assemblées à ce spectacle, ayant vu les choses qui étaient arrivées, s'en retournaient, frappant leurs poitrines.
  
  49 Et tous ceux de sa connaissance, et des femmes qui l'avaient accompagné depuis la Galilée, se tenaient loin, regardant ces choses. Galilée
  
  50 Et voici, un homme nommé Joseph, qui était conseiller, homme de bien et juste Arimathée
  
  51 (celui-ci ne s'était pas joint à leur conseil et à leur action), qui était d'Arimathée, ville des Juifs, et qui attendait, lui aussi, le royaume de Dieu... ;
  
  52 celui-ci, étant venu à Pilate, lui demanda le corps de Jésus.
  
  53 Et l'ayant descendu, il l'enveloppa d'un linceul, et le mit dans un sépulcre taillé dans le roc, où personne n'avait jamais été déposé.
  
  54 Et c'était le jour de la Préparation et le crépuscule du sabbat.
  
  55 Et des femmes qui l'avaient accompagné depuis la Galilée, ayant suivi, regardèrent le sépulcre et comment son corps y avait été déposé. Galilée
  
  56 Et s'en étant retournées, elles préparèrent des aromates et des parfums ; et, le sabbat, elles se tinrent en repos, selon le commandement.
- Exode 20
  
  1 God spoke all these words, saying,
  
  2 "I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
  
  3 "You shall have no other gods before me.
  
  4 "You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
  
  5 you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me,
  
  6 and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
  
  7 "You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
  
  8 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  
  9 You shall labor six days, and do all your work,
  
  10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates;
  
  11 for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day, and made it holy.
  
  12 "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.
  
  13 "You shall not murder.
  
  14 "You shall not commit adultery.
  
  15 "You shall not steal.
  
  16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
  
  17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's."
  
  18 All the people perceived the thunderings, the lightnings, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled, and stayed at a distance.
  
  19 They said to Moses, "Speak with us yourself, and we will listen; but don't let God speak with us, lest we die."
  
  20 Moses said to the people, "Don't be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won't sin."
  
  21 The people stayed at a distance, and Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.
  
  22 Yahweh said to Moses, "This is what you shall tell the children of Israel: 'You yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.
  
  23 You shall most certainly not make alongside of me gods of silver, or gods of gold for yourselves.
  
  24 You shall make an altar of earth for me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your cattle. In every place where I record my name I will come to you and I will bless you.
  
  25 If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of cut stones; for if you lift up your tool on it, you have polluted it.
  
  26 Neither shall you go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed to it.'
  
  Job 38
  
  1 Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind,
  
  2 "Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
  
  3 Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!
  
  4 "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
  
  5 Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?
  
  6 Whereupon were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone,
  
  7 when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
  
  8 "Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth from the womb,
  
  9 when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,
  
  10 marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,
  
  11 and said, 'Here you may come, but no further. Here your proud waves shall be stayed?'
  
  12 "Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place;
  
  13 that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?
  
  14 It is changed as clay under the seal, and stands forth as a garment.
  
  15 From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.
  
  16 "Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?
  
  17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
  
  18 Have you comprehended the earth in its breadth? Declare, if you know it all.
  
  19 "What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,
  
  20 that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?
  
  21 Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
  
  22 Have you entered the treasuries of the snow, or have you seen the treasures of the hail,
  
  23 which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
  
  24 By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?
  
  25 Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm;
  
  26 To cause it to rain on a land where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man;
  
  27 to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to spring forth?
  
  28 Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?
  
  29 Out of whose womb came the ice? The gray frost of the sky, who has given birth to it?
  
  30 The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.
  
  31 "Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
  
  32 Can you lead forth the constellations in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
  
  33 Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?
  
  34 "Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, That abundance of waters may cover you?
  
  35 Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, 'Here we are?'
  
  36 Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
  
  37 Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of the sky,
  
  38 when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?
  
  39 "Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
  
  40 when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?
  
  41 Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
  
  Luc 23
  
  1 The whole company of them rose up and brought him before Pilate.
  
  2 They began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man perverting the nation, forbidding paying taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king."
  
  3 Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "So you say."
  
  4 Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes, "I find no basis for a charge against this man."
  
  5 But they insisted, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee even to this place."
  
  6 But when Pilate heard Galilee mentioned, he asked if the man was a Galilean.
  
  7 When he found out that he was in Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days.
  
  8 Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad, for he had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had heard many things about him. He hoped to see some miracle done by him.
  
  9 He questioned him with many words, but he gave no answers.
  
  10 The chief priests and the scribes stood, vehemently accusing him.
  
  11 Herod with his soldiers humiliated him and mocked him. Dressing him in luxurious clothing, they sent him back to Pilate.
  
  12 Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before that they were enemies with each other.
  
  13 Pilate called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
  
  14 and said to them, "You brought this man to me as one that perverts the people, and see, I have examined him before you, and found no basis for a charge against this man concerning those things of which you accuse him.
  
  15 Neither has Herod, for I sent you to him, and see, nothing worthy of death has been done by him.
  
  16 I will therefore chastise him and release him."
  
  17 Now he had to release one prisoner to them at the feast.
  
  18 But they all cried out together, saying, "Away with this man! Release to us Barabbas!"--
  
  19 one who was thrown into prison for a certain revolt in the city, and for murder.
  
  20 Then Pilate spoke to them again, wanting to release Jesus,
  
  21 but they shouted, saying, "Crucify! Crucify him!"
  
  22 He said to them the third time, "Why? What evil has this man done? I have found no capital crime in him. I will therefore chastise him and release him."
  
  23 But they were urgent with loud voices, asking that he might be crucified. Their voices and the voices of the chief priests prevailed.
  
  24 Pilate decreed that what they asked for should be done.
  
  25 He released him who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus up to their will.
  
  26 When they led him away, they grabbed one Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it after Jesus.
  
  27 A great multitude of the people followed him, including women who also mourned and lamented him.
  
  28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.
  
  29 For behold, the days are coming in which they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.'
  
  30 Then they will begin to tell the mountains, 'Fall on us!' and tell the hills, 'Cover us.'
  
  31 For if they do these things in the green tree, what will be done in the dry?"
  
  32 There were also others, two criminals, led with him to be put to death.
  
  33 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified him there with the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.
  
  34 Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing." Dividing his garments among them, they cast lots.
  
  35 The people stood watching. The rulers with them also scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others. Let him save himself, if this is the Christ of God, his chosen one!"
  
  36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him vinegar,
  
  37 and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!"
  
  38 An inscription was also written over him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: "THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS."
  
  39 One of the criminals who was hanged insulted him, saying, "If you are the Christ, save yourself and us!"
  
  40 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, "Don't you even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?
  
  41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong."
  
  42 He said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when you come into your Kingdom."
  
  43 Jesus said to him, "Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
  
  44 It was now about the sixth hour , and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.
  
  45 The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.
  
  46 Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!" Having said this, he breathed his last.
  
  47 When the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous man."
  
  48 All the multitudes that came together to see this, when they saw the things that were done, returned home beating their breasts.
  
  49 All his acquaintances, and the women who followed with him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
  
  50 Behold, a man named Joseph, who was a member of the council, a good and righteous man
  
  51 (he had not consented to their counsel and deed), from Arimathaea, a city of the Jews, who was also waiting for the Kingdom of God:
  
  52 this man went to Pilate, and asked for Jesus' body.
  
  53 He took it down, and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb that was cut in stone, where no one had ever been laid.
  
  54 It was the day of the Preparation, and the Sabbath was drawing near.
  
  55 The women, who had come with him out of Galilee, followed after, and saw the tomb, and how his body was laid.
  
  56 They returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
