      1 Le Seigneur dit à Moïse et à Aaron :
      2 « Chaque Israélite doit camper près de l’étendard de son unité d’armée et de la bannière de sa famille. Le camp sera installé autour de la tente de la rencontre, mais à une certaine distance.
      3 « A l’est se trouvera l’unité d’armée groupée autour de l’étendard de Juda. Les hommes recensés comme aptes au service militaire seront commandés par un chef de leur tribu, à savoir : pour Juda : Nachon, fils d’Amminadab, avec 74 600 hommes ; pour Issakar : Netanéel, fils de Souar, avec 54 400 hommes ; pour Zabulon : Éliab, fils de Hélon, avec 57 400 hommes.
      9 L’unité d’armée de Juda comptera donc 186 400 hommes. Ce sont eux qui partiront en tête du peuple d’Israël.
      10 « Au sud se trouvera l’unité d’armée groupée autour de l’étendard de Ruben. Les hommes recensés comme aptes au service militaire seront commandés par un chef de leur tribu, à savoir : pour Ruben : Élissour, fils de Chedéour, avec 46 500 hommes ; pour Siméon : Cheloumiel, fils de Sourichaddaï, avec 59 300 hommes ; pour Gad : Éliassaf, fils de Déouel, avec 45 650 hommes.
      16 L’unité d’armée de Ruben comptera donc 151 450 hommes. Ce sont eux qui partiront en second.
      17 « Ensuite les descendants de Lévi partiront, avec la tente de la rencontre. Ils se trouveront donc entre les deux premières et les deux dernières unités. Ils partiront eux aussi dans l’ordre où ils campent, chaque homme à sa place, suivant l’étendard de son clan.
      18 « A l’ouest se trouvera l’unité d’armée groupée autour de l’étendard d’Éfraïm. Les hommes recensés comme aptes au service militaire seront commandés par un chef de leur tribu, à savoir : pour Éfraïm : Élichama, fils d’Ammihoud, avec 40 500 hommes ; pour Manassé : Gamliel, fils de Pedassour, avec 32 200 hommes ; pour Benjamin : Abidan, fils de Guidoni, avec 35 400 hommes.
      24 L’unité d’armée d’Éfraïm comptera donc 108 100 hommes. Cette troisième unité d’armée partira après les descendants de Lévi.
      25 « Au nord se trouvera l’unité d’armée groupée autour de l’étendard de Dan. Les hommes recensés comme aptes au service militaire seront commandés par un chef de leur tribu, à savoir : pour Dan : Ahiézer, fils d’Ammichaddaï, avec 62 700 hommes ; pour Asser : Paguiel, fils d’Okran, avec 41 500 hommes ; pour Neftali : Ahira, fils d’Énan, avec 53 400 hommes.
      31 L’unité d’armée de Dan comptera donc 157 600 hommes. Ce sont eux qui partiront en dernier. « Tous resteront groupés autour de leurs étendards. »
      32 Le total des Israélites recensés, par famille et par unité d’armée, s’élevait à 603 550.
      33 Les descendants de Lévi ne furent pas recensés en même temps que les autres Israélites, conformément à l’ordre que le Seigneur avait donné à Moïse.
      34 Les Israélites agissaient exactement comme le Seigneur l’avait ordonné à Moïse : ils campaient près de leurs étendards, et partaient dans l’ordre indiqué, par clans et par familles.

      2 "The children of Israel shall encamp every man by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers' houses: at a distance from the Tent of Meeting shall they encamp around it."
      3 Those who encamp on the east side toward the sunrise shall be of the standard of the camp of Judah, according to their divisions: and the prince of the children of Judah shall be Nahshon the son of Amminadab.
      4 His division, and those who were numbered of them, were seventy-four thousand six hundred.
      5 Those who encamp next to him shall be the tribe of Issachar: and the prince of the children of Issachar shall be Nethanel the son of Zuar.
      6 His division, and those who were numbered of it, were fifty-four thousand four hundred.
      7 The tribe of Zebulun: and the prince of the children of Zebulun shall be Eliab the son of Helon.
      8 His division, and those who were numbered of it, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
      9 All who were numbered of the camp of Judah were one hundred eighty-six thousand four hundred, according to their divisions. They shall set out first.
      10 "On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their divisions. The prince of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.
      11 His division, and those who were numbered of it, were forty-six thousand five hundred.
      12 "Those who encamp next to him shall be the tribe of Simeon. The prince of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.
      13 His division, and those who were numbered of them, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
      14 "The tribe of Gad: and the prince of the children of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel.
      15 His division, and those who were numbered of them, were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty.
      16 "All who were numbered of the camp of Reuben were one hundred fifty-one thousand four hundred fifty, according to their armies. They shall set out second.
      17 "Then the Tent of Meeting shall set out, with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps. As they encamp, so shall they set out, every man in his place, by their standards.
      18 "On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their divisions: and the prince of the children of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud.
      19 His division, and those who were numbered of them, were forty thousand five hundred.
      20 "Next to him shall be the tribe of Manasseh: and the prince of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.
      21 His division, and those who were numbered of them, were thirty-two thousand two hundred.
      22 "The tribe of Benjamin: and the prince of the children of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni.
      23 His army, and those who were numbered of them, were thirty-five thousand four hundred.
      24 "All who were numbered of the camp of Ephraim were one hundred eight thousand one hundred, according to their divisions. They shall set out third.
      25 "On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan according to their divisions: and the prince of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.
      26 His division, and those who were numbered of them, were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
      27 "Those who encamp next to him shall be the tribe of Asher: and the prince of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ochran.
      28 His division, and those who were numbered of them, were forty-one thousand and five hundred.
      29 "The tribe of Naphtali: and the prince of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan.
      30 His division, and those who were numbered of them, were fifty-three thousand four hundred.
      31 "All who were numbered of the camp of Dan were one hundred fifty-seven thousand six hundred. They shall set out last by their standards."
      32 These are those who were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers' houses. All who were numbered of the camps according to their armies were six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty.
      33 But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as Yahweh commanded Moses.
      34 Thus the children of Israel did. According to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so they encamped by their standards, and so they set out, everyone by their families, according to their fathers' houses.

      La disposition des tentes des tribus.

      - Les tribus devaient camper autour de la tente d’assignation, et être tournées vers elle : le tabernacle se trouvait au centre du campement. C’était le témoignage de la Grâce et de la présence divines. Les Israélites devaient dresser leurs tentes à une certaine distance du sanctuaire, pour montrer le respect dû à son sujet. Ils disposaient leur campement de manière ordonnée, sans murmures ni disputes ; cette bonne disposition des tentes avait une certaine élégance et mettait le peuple en sûreté. Nous devons, dans notre propre intérêt, savoir nous contenter de la place qui nous est allouée et nous efforcer ensuite de nous organiser convenablement, sans contester ni convoiter quoi que ce soit à autrui ; aujourd’hui, au temps de l’évangile, l’église se doit d’être cohérente, selon le modèle dicté par l’Écriture : chacun doit connaître sa place et savoir y rester ; tous pourront alors se réjouir dans le Seigneur, dans un endroit où règne l’ordre, Colossiens 2:5.
