  2 וַ֠יִּשְׁלַח אֶת־אֶלְיָקִ֨ים אֲשֶׁר־עַל־הַבַּ֜יִת וְשֶׁבְנָ֣א הַסֹּפֵ֗ר וְאֵת֙ זִקְנֵ֣י הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֔ים מִתְכַּסִּ֖ים בַּשַּׂקִּ֑ים אֶל־יְשַֽׁעְיָ֥הוּ הַנָּבִ֖יא בֶּן־אָמֽוֹץ׃
  
  3 וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר חִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ יוֹם־צָרָ֧ה וְתוֹכֵחָ֛ה וּנְאָצָ֖ה הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה כִּ֣י בָ֤אוּ בָנִים֙ עַד־מַשְׁבֵּ֔ר וְכֹ֥חַ אַ֖יִן לְלֵדָֽה׃
  
  4 אוּלַ֡י יִשְׁמַע֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ אֵ֣ת ׀ כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֣י רַב־שָׁקֵ֗ה אֲשֶׁר֩ שְׁלָח֨וֹ מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁ֤וּר ׀ אֲדֹנָיו֙ לְחָרֵף֙ אֱלֹהִ֣ים חַ֔י וְהוֹכִ֙יחַ֙ בַּדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁמַ֖ע יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ וְנָשָׂ֣אתָ תְפִלָּ֔ה בְּעַ֥ד הַשְּׁאֵרִ֖ית הַנִּמְצָאָֽה׃
  
  5 וַיָּבֹ֗אוּ עַבְדֵ֛י הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ אֶל־יְשַֽׁעַיָֽהוּ׃
  
  6 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ יְשַֽׁעְיָ֔הוּ כֹּ֥ה תֹאמְר֖וּן אֶל־אֲדֹֽנֵיכֶ֑ם כֹּ֣ה ׀ אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה אַל־תִּירָא֙ מִפְּנֵ֤י הַדְּבָרִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׁמַ֗עְתָּ אֲשֶׁ֧ר גִּדְּפ֛וּ נַעֲרֵ֥י מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁ֖וּר אֹתִֽי׃
  
  7 הִנְנִ֨י נֹתֵ֥ן בּוֹ֙ ר֔וּחַ וְשָׁמַ֥ע שְׁמוּעָ֖ה וְשָׁ֣ב לְאַרְצ֑וֹ וְהִפַּלְתִּ֥יו בַּחֶ֖רֶב בְּאַרְצֽוֹ׃
  
  8 וַיָּ֙שָׁב֙ רַב־שָׁקֵ֔ה וַיִּמְצָא֙ אֶת־מֶ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֔וּר נִלְחָ֖ם עַל־לִבְנָ֑ה כִּ֣י שָׁמַ֔ע כִּ֥י נָסַ֖ע מִלָּכִֽישׁ׃
  
  9 וַיִּשְׁמַ֗ע אֶל־תִּרְהָ֤קָה מֶֽלֶך־כּוּשׁ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הִנֵּ֥ה יָצָ֖א לְהִלָּחֵ֣ם אִתָּ֑ךְ וַיָּ֙שָׁב֙ וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח מַלְאָכִ֔ים אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ לֵאמֹֽר׃
  
  10 כֹּ֣ה תֹאמְר֗וּן אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֤הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־יְהוּדָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַל־יַשִּׁאֲךָ֣ אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַתָּ֛ה בֹּטֵ֥חַ בּ֖וֹ לֵאמֹ֑ר לֹ֤א תִנָּתֵן֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם בְּיַ֖ד מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּֽׁוּר׃
  
  11 הִנֵּ֣ה ׀ אַתָּ֣ה שָׁמַ֗עְתָּ אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשׂ֜וּ מַלְכֵ֥י אַשּׁ֛וּר לְכָל־הָאֲרָצ֖וֹת לְהַֽחֲרִימָ֑ם וְאַתָּ֖ה תִּנָּצֵֽל׃
  
  12 הַהִצִּ֨ילוּ אֹתָ֜ם אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַגּוֹיִם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שִׁחֲת֣וּ אֲבוֹתַ֔י אֶת־גּוֹזָ֖ן וְאֶת־חָרָ֑ן וְרֶ֥צֶף וּבְנֵי־עֶ֖דֶן אֲשֶׁ֥ר בִּתְלַאשָּֽׂר׃
  
  13 אַיּ֤וֹ מֶֽלֶךְ־חֲמָת֙ וּמֶ֣לֶךְ אַרְפָּ֔ד וּמֶ֖לֶךְ לָעִ֣יר סְפַרְוָ֑יִם הֵנַ֖ע וְעִוָּֽה׃
  
  14 וַיִּקַּ֨ח חִזְקִיָּ֧הוּ אֶת־הַסְּפָרִ֛ים מִיַּ֥ד הַמַּלְאָכִ֖ים וַיִּקְרָאֵ֑ם וַיַּ֙עַל֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּפְרְשֵׂ֥הוּ חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃
  
  15 וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֨ל חִזְקִיָּ֜הוּ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָה֮ וַיֹּאמַר֒ יְהוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ יֹשֵׁ֣ב הַכְּרֻבִ֔ים אַתָּה־ה֤וּא הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ לְבַדְּךָ֔ לְכֹ֖ל מַמְלְכ֣וֹת הָאָ֑רֶץ אַתָּ֣ה עָשִׂ֔יתָ אֶת־הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
  
  16 הַטֵּ֨ה יְהוָ֤ה ׀ אָזְנְךָ֙ וּֽשֲׁמָ֔ע פְּקַ֧ח יְהוָ֛ה עֵינֶ֖יךָ וּרְאֵ֑ה וּשְׁמַ֗ע אֵ֚ת דִּבְרֵ֣י סַנְחֵרִ֔יב אֲשֶׁ֣ר שְׁלָח֔וֹ לְחָרֵ֖ף אֱלֹהִ֥ים חָֽי׃
  
  17 אָמְנָ֖ם יְהוָ֑ה הֶחֱרִ֜יבוּ מַלְכֵ֥י אַשּׁ֛וּר אֶת־הַגּוֹיִ֖ם וְאֶת־אַרְצָֽם׃
  
  18 וְנָתְנ֥וּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֖ם בָּאֵ֑שׁ כִּי֩ לֹ֨א אֱלֹהִ֜ים הֵ֗מָּה כִּ֣י אִם־מַעֲשֵׂ֧ה יְדֵֽי־אָדָ֛ם עֵ֥ץ וָאֶ֖בֶן וַֽיְאַבְּדֽוּם׃
  
  19 וְעַתָּה֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ הוֹשִׁיעֵ֥נוּ נָ֖א מִיָּד֑וֹ וְיֵֽדְעוּ֙ כָּל־מַמְלְכ֣וֹת הָאָ֔רֶץ כִּ֥י אַתָּ֛ה יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים לְבַדֶּֽךָ׃
  
  20 וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ יְשַֽׁעְיָ֣הוּ בֶן־אָמ֔וֹץ אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ לֵאמֹ֑ר כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִתְפַּלַּ֧לְתָּ אֵלַ֛י אֶל־סַנְחֵרִ֥ב מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁ֖וּר שָׁמָֽעְתִּי׃
  
  21 זֶ֣ה הַדָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה עָלָ֑יו בָּזָ֨ה לְךָ֜ לָעֲגָ֣ה לְךָ֗ בְּתוּלַת֙ בַּת־צִיּ֔וֹן אַחֲרֶ֙יךָ֙ רֹ֣אשׁ הֵנִ֔יעָה בַּ֖ת יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃
  
  22 אֶת־מִ֤י חֵרַ֙פְתָּ֙ וְגִדַּ֔פְתָּ וְעַל־מִ֖י הֲרִימ֣וֹתָ קּ֑וֹל וַתִּשָּׂ֥א מָר֛וֹם עֵינֶ֖יךָ עַל־קְד֥וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
  
  23 בְּיַ֣ד מַלְאָכֶיךָ֮ חֵרַ֣פְתָּ ׀ אֲדֹנָי֒ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר *ברכב **בְּרֹ֥ב רִכְבִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י עָלִ֛יתִי מְר֥וֹם הָרִ֖ים יַרְכְּתֵ֣י לְבָנ֑וֹן וְאֶכְרֹ֞ת קוֹמַ֤ת אֲרָזָיו֙ מִבְח֣וֹר בְּרֹשָׁ֔יו וְאָב֙וֹאָה֙ מְל֣וֹן קִצֹּ֔ה יַ֖עַר כַּרְמִלּֽוֹ׃

  25 הֲלֹֽא־שָׁמַ֤עְתָּ לְמֵֽרָחוֹק֙ אֹתָ֣הּ עָשִׂ֔יתִי לְמִ֥ימֵי קֶ֖דֶם וִֽיצַרְתִּ֑יהָ עַתָּ֣ה הֲבֵיאתִ֗יהָ וּתְהִ֗י לַהְשׁ֛וֹת גַּלִּ֥ים נִצִּ֖ים עָרִ֥ים בְּצֻרֽוֹת׃
  
  26 וְיֹֽשְׁבֵיהֶן֙ קִצְרֵי־יָ֔ד חַ֖תּוּ וַיֵּבֹ֑שׁוּ הָי֞וּ עֵ֤שֶׂב שָׂדֶה֙ וִ֣ירַק דֶּ֔שֶׁא חֲצִ֣יר גַּגּ֔וֹת וּשְׁדֵפָ֖ה לִפְנֵ֥י קָמָֽה׃
  
  27 וְשִׁבְתְּךָ֛ וְצֵאתְךָ֥ וּבֹאֲךָ֖ יָדָ֑עְתִּי וְאֵ֖ת הִֽתְרַגֶּזְךָ֥ אֵלָֽי׃
  
  28 יַ֚עַן הִתְרַגֶּזְךָ֣ אֵלַ֔י וְשַׁאֲנַנְךָ֖ עָלָ֣ה בְאָזְנָ֑י וְשַׂמְתִּ֨י חַחִ֜י בְּאַפֶּ֗ךָ וּמִתְגִּי֙ בִּשְׂפָתֶ֔יךָ וַהֲשִׁ֣בֹתִ֔יךָ בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥אתָ בָּֽהּ׃
  
  29 וְזֶה־לְּךָ֣ הָא֔וֹת אָכ֤וֹל הַשָּׁנָה֙ סָפִ֔יחַ וּבַשָּׁנָ֥ה הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית סָחִ֑ישׁ וּבַשָּׁנָ֣ה הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֗ית זִרְע֧וּ וְקִצְר֛וּ וְנִטְע֥וּ כְרָמִ֖ים וְאִכְל֥וּ פִרְיָֽם׃
  
  30 וְיָ֨סְפָ֜ה פְּלֵיטַ֧ת בֵּית־יְהוּדָ֛ה הַנִּשְׁאָרָ֖ה שֹׁ֣רֶשׁ לְמָ֑טָּה וְעָשָׂ֥ה פְרִ֖י לְמָֽעְלָה׃
  
  31 כִּ֤י מִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ תֵּצֵ֣א שְׁאֵרִ֔ית וּפְלֵיטָ֖ה מֵהַ֣ר צִיּ֑וֹן קִנְאַ֛ת יְהוָ֥ה **צְבָא֖וֹת תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־זֹּֽאת׃
  
  32 לָכֵ֗ן כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֶ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֔וּר לֹ֤א יָבֹא֙ אֶל־הָעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֔את וְלֹֽא־יוֹרֶ֥ה שָׁ֖ם חֵ֑ץ וְלֹֽא־יְקַדְּמֶ֣נָּה מָגֵ֔ן וְלֹֽא־יִשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ עָלֶ֖יהָ סֹלְלָֽה׃
  
  33 בַּדֶּ֥רֶךְ אֲשֶׁר־יָבֹ֖א בָּ֣הּ יָשׁ֑וּב וְאֶל־הָעִ֥יר הַזֹּ֛את לֹ֥א יָבֹ֖א נְאֻם־יְהוָֽה׃
  
  34 וְגַנּוֹתִ֛י אֶל־הָעִ֥יר הַזֹּ֖את לְהֽוֹשִׁיעָ֑הּ לְמַֽעֲנִ֔י וּלְמַ֖עַן דָּוִ֥ד עַבְדִּֽי׃
  
  35 וַיְהִי֮ בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַהוּא֒ וַיֵּצֵ֣א ׀ מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֗ה וַיַּךְ֙ בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה אַשּׁ֔וּר מֵאָ֛ה שְׁמוֹנִ֥ים וַחֲמִשָּׁ֖ה אָ֑לֶף וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣ימוּ בַבֹּ֔קֶר וְהִנֵּ֥ה כֻלָּ֖ם פְּגָרִ֥ים מֵתִֽים׃
  
  36 וַיִּסַּ֣ע וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ וַיָּ֖שָׁב סַנְחֵרִ֣יב מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁ֑וּר וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב בְּנִֽינְוֵֽה׃
  
  37 וַיְהִי֩ ה֨וּא מִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֜ה בֵּ֣ית ׀ נִסְרֹ֣ךְ אֱלֹהָ֗יו וְֽאַדְרַמֶּ֨לֶךְ וְשַׂרְאֶ֤צֶר **בָּנָיו֙ הִכֻּ֣הוּ בַחֶ֔רֶב וְהֵ֥מָּה נִמְלְט֖וּ אֶ֣רֶץ אֲרָרָ֑ט וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ אֵֽסַר־חַדֹּ֥ן בְּנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃

  1 It happened, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of Yahweh.
  
  2 He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
  
  3 They said to him, "Thus says Hezekiah, 'This day is a day of trouble, of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them.
  
  4 It may be Yahweh your God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.'"
  
  5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
  
  6 Isaiah said to them, "Thus you shall tell your master, 'Thus says Yahweh, "Don't be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
  
  7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he will hear news, and will return to his own land. I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land."'"
  
  8 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish.
  
  9 When he heard it said of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, "Behold, he has come out to fight against you, he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,
  
  10 'Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, "Don't let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.
  
  11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. Will you be delivered?
  
  12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden that were in Telassar?
  
  13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?"'"
  
  14 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to the house of Yahweh, and spread it before Yahweh.
  
  15 Hezekiah prayed before Yahweh, and said, "Yahweh, the God of Israel, who sit above the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.
  
  16 Incline your ear, Yahweh, and hear. Open your eyes, Yahweh, and see. Hear the words of Sennacherib, with which he has sent to defy the living God.
  
  17 Truly, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,
  
  18 and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they have destroyed them.
  
  19 Now therefore, Yahweh our God, save us, I beg you, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, Yahweh, are God alone."
  
  20 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, "Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, 'Whereas you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard you.
  
  21 This is the word that Yahweh has spoken concerning him: "The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.
  
  22 Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel.
  
  23 By your messengers you have defied the Lord, and have said, 'With the multitude of my chariots, I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I will cut down its tall cedars, and its choice fir trees; and I will enter into his farthest lodging place, the forest of his fruitful field.
  
  24 I have dug and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet will I dry up all the rivers of Egypt.'
  
  25 Haven't you heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? Now have I brought it to pass, that it should be yours to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.
  
  26 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field, and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops, and like grain blasted before it has grown up.
  
  27 But I know your sitting down, and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging against me.
  
  28 Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore will I put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came."
  
  29 "'This shall be the sign to you: You shall eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat its fruit.
  
  30 The remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.
  
  31 For out of Jerusalem a remnant will go out, and out of Mount Zion those who shall escape. The zeal of Yahweh will perform this.'
  
  32 "Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the king of Assyria, 'He shall not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.
  
  33 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come to this city,' says Yahweh.
  
  34 'For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David's sake.'"
  
  35 It happened that night, that the angel of Yahweh went out, and struck one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.
  
  36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and lived at Nineveh.
  
  37 It happened, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.

  1 Et il arriva, quand le roi Ézéchias eut entendu ces choses, qu'il déchira ses vêtements, et se couvrit d'un sac, et entra dans la maison de l'Éternel.
  
  2 Et il envoya Éliakim, qui était préposé sur la maison, et Shebna, le scribe, et les anciens des sacrificateurs, couverts de sacs, vers Ésaïe, le prophète, fils d'Amots ;
  
  3 et ils lui dirent : Ainsi dit Ézéchias : Ce jour est un jour d'angoisse, et de châtiment, et d'opprobre ; car les enfants sont venus jusqu'à la naissance, et il n'y a point de force pour enfanter.
  
  4 Peut-être l'Éternel, ton Dieu, entendra-t-il toutes les paroles du Rab-Shaké, que le roi d'Assyrie, son seigneur, a envoyé pour outrager le Dieu vivant, et punira-t-il les paroles que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, a entendues ? Fais donc monter une prière pour le résidu qui se trouve encore.
  
  5 Et les serviteurs du roi Ézéchias vinrent vers Ésaïe.
  
  6 Et Ésaïe leur dit : Vous direz ainsi à votre seigneur : Ainsi dit l'Éternel : Ne crains pas à cause des paroles que tu as entendues, par lesquelles les serviteurs du roi d'Assyrie m'ont blasphémé.
  
  7 Voici, je vais mettre en lui un esprit, et il entendra une nouvelle, et retournera dans son pays ; et je le ferai tomber par l'épée dans son pays.
  
  8 Et le Rab-Shaké s'en retourna, et trouva le roi d'Assyrie faisant la guerre à Libna ; car il avait appris qu'il était parti de Lakis.
  
  9 Et le roi d'Assyrie ouït dire, touchant Tirhaka, roi d'Éthiopie : Voici, il est sorti pour te faire la guerre. Et il envoya de nouveau des messagers à Ézéchias, disant :
  
  10 Vous parlerez ainsi à Ézéchias, roi de Juda, disant : Que ton Dieu, en qui tu te confies, ne te trompe point, disant : Jérusalem ne sera pas livrée en la main du roi d'Assyrie.
  
  11 Voici, tu as entendu ce que les rois d'Assyrie ont fait à tous les pays, les détruisant entièrement ; et toi, tu serais délivré !
  
  12 Est-ce que les dieux des nations que mes pères ont détruites les ont délivrées, Gozan, et Charan, et Rétseph, et les fils d'Éden qui étaient en Thelassar ?
  
  13 Où est le roi de Hamath, et le roi d'Arpad, et le roi de la ville de Sepharvaïm, d'Héna, et d'Ivva ?
  
  14 Et Ézéchias prit la lettre de la main des messagers, et la lut, et monta dans la maison de l'Éternel ; et Ézéchias la déploya devant l'Éternel.
  
  15 Et Ézéchias pria l'Éternel et dit : Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, qui es assis entre les chérubins, toi, le Même, toi seul tu es le Dieu de tous les royaumes de la terre ; toi, tu as fait les cieux et la terre. Éternel ! incline ton oreille et écoute.
  
  16 Éternel ! ouvre tes yeux, et vois ; et écoute les paroles de Sankhérib, qu'il a envoyées pour outrager le Dieu vivant.
  
  17 Il est vrai, Éternel ! les rois d'Assyrie ont dévasté les nations et leurs pays,
  
  18 et ont jeté au feu leurs dieux ; car ce n'étaient pas des dieux, mais l'ouvrage de mains d'homme, -du bois, et de la pierre ; et ils les ont détruits.
  
  19 Et maintenant, Éternel, notre Dieu ! sauve-nous, je te prie, de sa main, afin que tous les royaumes de la terre sachent que toi, Éternel, tu es Dieu, toi seul.
  
  20 Et Ésaïe, fils d'Amots, envoya vers Ézéchias, disant : Ainsi dit l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël : Quant à la prière que tu m'as faite au sujet de Sankhérib, roi d'Assyrie, je l'ai entendue.
  
  21 C'est ici la parole que l'Éternel a prononcée contre lui : La vierge, fille de Sion, te méprise, elle se moque de toi ; la fille de Jérusalem secoue la tête après toi.
  
  22 Qui as-tu outragé et blasphémé ? Et contre qui as-tu élevé la voix ? C'est contre le Saint d'Israël que tu as levé tes yeux en haut.
  
  23 Par tes messagers tu as outragé le Seigneur, et tu as dit : Avec la multitude de mes chars j'ai gravi le haut des montagnes, les parties reculées du Liban, et je couperai ses hauts cèdres, l'élite de ses cyprès, et je parviendrai jusqu'à son dernier gîte, à la forêt de son Carmel.
  
  24 J'ai creusé, et j'ai bu des eaux étrangères ; et j'ai desséché avec la plante de mes pieds tous les fleuves de Matsor...
  
  25 N'as-tu pas entendu que j'ai fait cela dès longtemps, et que je l'ai formé dès les jours d'autrefois ? Maintenant je l'ai fait arriver, pour que tu réduises en monceaux de ruines des villes fortes.
  
  26 Et leurs habitants ont été sans force, ils ont été terrifiés, et ont été couverts de honte ; ils ont été comme l'herbe des champs et l'herbe verte, comme l'herbe des toits et la récolte flétrie avant qu'elle soit en tige.
  
  27 Mais je sais ton habitation, et ta sortie et ton entrée, et ta rage contre moi.
  
  28 Parce que tu es plein de rage contre moi, et que ton insolence est montée à mes oreilles, je mettrai mon anneau à ton nez et mon frein à tes lèvres, et je te ferai retourner par le chemin par lequel tu es venu.
  
  29 Et ceci en sera le signe pour toi : on mangera cette année ce qui lève des grains tombés, et la seconde année ce qui croît de soi-même ; et la troisième année, vous sèmerez et vous moissonnerez, et vous planterez des vignes et vous en mangerez le fruit.
  
  30 Et ce qui est réchappé et demeuré de reste de la maison de Juda poussera encore des racines en bas et produira du fruit en haut.
  
  31 Car de Jérusalem sortira un résidu, et de la montagne de Sion, ce qui est réchappé. La jalousie de l'Éternel des armées fera cela.
  
  32 C'est pourquoi, ainsi dit l'Éternel touchant le roi d'Assyrie : Il n'entrera pas dans cette ville, et il n'y lancera point de flèche ; il ne lui présentera pas le bouclier, et il n'élèvera point de terrasse contre elle.
  
  33 Il s'en retournera par le chemin par lequel il est venu, et il n'entrera pas dans cette ville, dit l'Éternel.
  
  34 Et je protègerai cette ville, afin de la sauver, à cause de moi, et à cause de David, mon serviteur.
  
  35 Et il arriva, cette nuit-là, qu'un ange de l'Éternel sortit, et frappa dans le camp des Assyriens cent quatre-vingt-cinq mille hommes ; et quand on se leva le matin, voici, c'étaient tous des corps morts.
  
  36 Et Sankhérib, roi d'Assyrie, partit, et s'en alla et s'en retourna, et habita à Ninive.
  
  37 Et il arriva, comme il se prosternait dans la maison de Nisroc, son dieu, qu'Adrammélec et Sharétser, ses fils, le frappèrent par l'épée ; et ils se sauvèrent dans le pays d'Ararat ; et Ésar-Haddon, son fils, régna à sa place.
